I called to see if they will be issuing refunds since the magazine is no longer being published and I was told they are still deciding this. I do not want a digital subscription since my main reason for getting issues were the promos. I have 2 years left on my subscription since I had faith that this publication would continue. I don't think that this was a last-minute decision

They should have had this in order straight away. They knew they were cancelling the magazine and people had pre-paid.

I emailed Beckett on 18th November with this...

Could you tell me if you have any information about a refund for unfulfilled issues on my subscription now that the magazine will no longer be published?

They replied yesterday with this...

To honor the remaining value of your subscription, Beckett is offering double the months of access to the Non-Sport Update Online Price Guide (Market Data Report + OPG Combo). This digital resource provides access to more than 3.1 million searchable non-sport cards, including pricing for over 1.5 million cards—nearly 400 times more coverage than the print magazine. It is available via both the website and mobile app.

I replied...

Thank you for your reply.
I would like to formally reject your offer of digital access to the price guide as this was not what I subscribed to or wanted. Please refund all outstanding subscription and postage payments.

Let's see where it goes from here.

With the reply I got, it really feels like they were playing the long game with the bait & switch in order not to part with any cash that isn't theirs.

normally when a company goes bust you can forget getting your money back but in this case ( as i understand it ) Becket owns the magazine and Becket have not gone bust so there should be no problem giving people a refund of money outstanding.

Not with Beckett but with another company when one of their publications was cancelled and I called about a refund they gave me the option of getting another magazine they published, never the option for my money back. I took the other subscription.

For 10 years, the topkicks at Beckett Media treated NSU, the staff, the writers and the zine's readership as red-headed step-children. It was purchased from the Toser family because they're sharks. It is hell-bent on eliminating competition or at least making their perceived rivals as uncomfortable as possible.

Skeptical? Then explain Beckett's plunging in on the emerging 1990s graded sportscard business of PSA, SGC and others. You could argue the Tosers, at least, got their money. But at what cost?

You cannot tell me that any Beckett Media exec carried a clue as to what this sub-industry of the trading card field is all about. The mag did not make money because no one knew how to sell that damned publication. How many adverts appeared in any one issue? Three? Beckett published NSU by rote only.

I harbor my own animus toward Beckett as a company, anyway, but will not waste keystrokes composing bile on an executive clique arrogant enough to chloroform NSU. They did us no favors.

“They can go p*ss up a rope.” And no form of diplomatic language from anyone can change my opinion.

Remember, for subscribers abroad, it's not only the magazine cash they owe us, but the not so small amount of postage as well.
