I don't want to express my opinion on the grading portion of the non-sports world, but it seems they are really starting to mine our hobby, looking for gold. Which there is plenty of. It has to have been mentioned on the board here, but that 1966 Fleer Marvel card that sold for huge money recently made me pause and feel like I just heard bad news.

For a while it didn't seem to me that grading was going to be a big thing in non-sports but all the popular sets of the 60's and 70's are being consumed now even with all the overproduction. And it's tough to find a deal on sealed boxes of anything good even from this century. I'm hoping to get lucky at a flea market with something like that. It might be my only hope.

Now it's all about the "rookie" cards. They (speculators) tried that crap in the 90s with Marvel cards but it didn't catch. I remember seeing listings somewhere (Wizard maybe?) for one of the early 90s Marvel sets calling out Spider-Man rookie and oooh....that's a 3-dollar card compared to the others in the set at only a few cents each. Rookie cards in non-sports is a gimmick that shouldn't be. I've been watching a lot of YouBoob videos for non-sports cards and they can be so very irritating. Its sports card investor mentality bleeding over into our pristine space, reminding me how frustrating things got in the late 2000s with autos and swatch cards. I probably should stop talking. I'll get myself into trouble.

I just watched a video of a guy cracking open a $10,000 Leaf 2025 non-sport box with only 18 single cards inside. The hobby has indeed changed, not for the better in my opinion either. As the saying goes "those who ignore history are bound to repeat it."

I just saw that a complete set of the Star Trek cards (Skybox, 1993) that were inserted with videos sold for $999.99 on June 28. I have just a couple of those. It seemed like too much work to hunt those down.

I did see one of the cards in a binder of the old Impel cards at a flea market recently.

eBay item number:366506304308

Disney Lorcana promo card. Sold. Somewhere south of $50,000!! We've been collecting the wrong kind of promo cards, and this grading stuff is just getting insane.

So you are going to have to explain this one to me, because from what I see, I don't believe it and something is up.

I know absolutely nothing about this card, this is not my hobby. But I looked because of your post and it seems to be a 2022 Disney Lorcana promo of Elsa from Frozen. It is a PSA graded gem mint 10 and was sold for $49,995.00 or Best Offer. So I really can't say what the sale price was. However there are a few cards just like it that are also graded 10s and have recent sold prices in the $10,000 - $17,000.00 range, again with Best Offers.

Here's why I don't believe it. The eBay data clearly shows that this same card has currently 414 graded gem mint 10s in the PSA population report. There are almost 700 of the cards that have been submitted to PSA covering all grades given. Who is paying that kind of money for a card that is not only not scarce, but not even scarce in PSA gem mint condition?

I'm sorry, I know the card market is insane, but this is not a rare card in rare high-grade condition. This is a card that has hundreds of copies or more, a majority of which were immediately placed in secure storage. They are almost all in pristine condition. So who is shelling out that kind of cash for a card that is in no way special? Where do you even find someone who wants it for $500? Is it people playing games?

I really would like some explanation from someone who knows this product, because a card price like that (indeed all those prices) breaks all the rules based on card supply, price demands, and even the supply of high graded cards in my opinion, promo or not.

My everyone-is-a-crook mind jumps to: is there maybe some people are in on it together and trying to artificially inflate value.

At any rate did it sell? Looks like it ended without a sale. Unless I'm wrong-readin'.

You are right! I checked with my AI assistant and here's the answer I got.

"there was almost certainly no completed sale—and therefore no legitimate final price.

The evidence:

On August 13, eBay marked the AU$49,999.88 listing as “Best Offer accepted.” Original listing
The seller relisted the same card using the identical photographs the next day, again for AU$49,999.88. Current relisting
The supposed August 13 transaction is absent from the recognized sales histories, while surrounding legitimate sales appear.

My conclusion: someone submitted an offer, the seller accepted it, but the buyer did not pay or the transaction was canceled. The hidden offer amount cannot responsibly be treated as a sale comparable."

Soon, we will all become irrelevant....

I keep seeing some "Monkey D Luffy One Piece" card constantly selling for $800-1000. It was apparently given out at Dodger Stadium at an unknown game.

All kinds of cards I've never heard of are selling at unheard of prices

A 52-card Carl Barks Heroes and Villains set sold for $349.99 with 2 bids on August 2.

A 56-card Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge Adventures set sold for the same price on the same day.

Those were tough sets to assemble back then (90's) and are tougher sets to assemble now.

Is this a promo? It looks like just a Marvel Universe (1990) base card but it sold for $331 with 3 bids.

And here's a sale of a card that admits in the description that it was hand-cut - as in hand-cut from a larger promo sheet - and sold for something less than $325 as a Best Offer. It was graded Gem Mint by PSA. Can a card be Gem Mint if it's just a piece of a now-damaged card? Isn't it also damaged even if the edges are clean and the corners sharp. It is by definition a trimmed card.

I don't know what to tell you. You are correct in that it isn't a manufactured card, it's part of a sheet. I wouldn't call it a trimmed card, as it wasn't made as a card. PSA has it labeled as "Promo Hand - Cut" and frankly, I didn't even know that was a category. Some sheets have been professionally cut up before when a particular card got valuable, but this was not a practice that was encouraged before.

So either the general hobby rules have changed, or PSA is making the general hobby rules change by grading things that should be refused. And just looking at the picture of the "card" back, I would say the top is noticeably off-center. That alone makes for grade deductions, without even being able to see what the edge cuts look like.

So PSA is probably the premiere grader for high value cards right now and this is their idea of GEM MT 10. What can I say, I'm just an amateur, they are the experts.

It was also described as a rare card which it is not.

I have two copies of the original 4 card sheet it came from. One is from Previews and the other is a version that was given out to dealers and collectors as a proper 4 card sheet. The other three cards are Flasher, Venom and Wolverine.

If anyone is interested I will scan and upload but please indicate.
