I think I read somewhere that The Sandman production knew it was going to finish after a second season before they began filming it, before all the Gaiman issues came out. It looked like the plug was being pulled on it regardless.

It appears that NBC is cutting many of its shows to make room for basketball games, which earn the network 2.5 billion a year. https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/n...0b61406b2eacd8&ei=50

There are rumors that Disney is unhappy with the falling ratings of "Doctor Who" and that Ncuti Gatwa will be replaced after 2 seasons. According to some sources, Amazon and the BBC are going relaunch the show as "Dr. Who" but not as a regular TV series.

In my view Doctor Who has been in a downward spiral ever since Matt Smith regenerated. I always recorded the programme to watch again before the next episode was broadcast but after the Matt Smith era was over I soon stopped the practice as I did not think the programme from then on warranted a second viewing. CBS cancelled "Watson" after 2 years and "DMV" after one.

I knew "DMV" was in trouble before its fall premiere. The commercials that ran across the summer were not funny.

Yeah, the finale was two weeks ago. I miss it. It was tough when Letterman left. I'd been watching Letterman since the early 80's when he started. Colbert did his own thing. There was a side story about how much he was into "Lord of the Rings." He often brought on actors from the movies and he had to ask them additional questions about the making of the movies. In a rare on-location bit he even filmed segments in New Zealand where the movie was shot. The best bit was when Liv Tyler came on several years ago. She brought along the special sword her character had and she let Colbert hold it. He was clearly overjoyed. She told him she kept it in storage and then he asked, "You mean you don't play with it every night?"

I lose nothing with the departure of Stephen Colbert. I almost never tuned in for years, only on rare nights when there was a certain guest I wanted to see. Since the second Trump term began, his monologues have been about nothing else. And they were not funny, just spitting mad and nasty. A comedian is supposed to make you laugh, but Colbert had one topic and no jokes. None of the current Late-Night Hosts could hold a candle to Johnny Carson. I don't think Comics Unleashed will do that well in the time slot either. Those syndicated shows have been used as a filler on other stations. Only saving grace for CBS is that they don't have to pay Colbert multi-millions to lose multi-millions anymore.

Were they losing money? That was the excuse for cancellation, right? Did they not have sponsors? I don't watch Late Night TV, but I imagine their very existence revolves around advertising dollars.

I disagree. I watched the show almost every night except Friday when they ran repeats. His monologues did have Trump jokes but probably something less than 50% because he commented on whatever was in the news like any late night host. If the show was losing money, why did the network wait over ten years to cancel? Networks dump shows after one episode if they get a tiny whiff of something bad. NBC was looking to save money at the "Late Night with Seth Meyers" show. They got rid of the band - not the whole show. Yeah, Carson was great. He could joke with whoever was the big celebrity of the time and he'd bring on somebody's grandma who won a bake-off and be very polite. He loved jazz/big band singers like Joe Williams and Sarah Vaughn and he loved talking to comedians.

I read that Colbert was paid $6 million/year when he started hosting The Late Show and then got a raise to $15 million/year in 2019, which was about what Letterman was getting. Gee, if the show was losing money, why the big raise? And $15 million/year is not huge money in the entertainment business.

Why was NSU the last printed magazine I could buy out of close to a dozen I used to read? The others all either switched to digital subscriptions or just folded up altogether. Some switched and still folded later. Why? Because advertisers left and the money from the readership wasn't enough to keep publishing profitable. Some might say the readers left first and the advertisers saw diminishing returns in increasing ad fees. It's a chicken or the egg thing, either way the printed magazine became a money loser and the industry changed. Whether you liked Colbert's style or not, and I did not, I do believe he had a huge contract, a dwindling viewership, and advertisers that weren't going to cover the cost of production. Did you see the size of his crew on that last show? For a talk show with a couch, a desk, a couple of cameras and cheap or free guests that were promoting their own stuff, what did they all do to earn a job? His contract came up and it was not deemed worthy of renewal. I never heard that he offered to cut his salary or staff. Maybe it was never offered from either side. You can attribute other reasons for the cancellation too if you like, but you know that it always does come down to money. Just like the publishing industry, mainstream TV revenue has changed with all the streaming channels. If Colbert's show was a money maker for CBS, I guarantee you he would still be on the air.

Colbert was not cancelled because of his ratings. He spoke truth to power and that power didn't like it. The same people have "60 Minutes", a popular and profitable show also on CBS, in full-on crisis mode for the exact same reason. ____________________ Everywhere around this burg they're running out of verbs, adverbs, and adjectives.
