I watched at least the last hour of the Grammy's Sunday night, catching the "In Memoriam" segment in which they flash photos of various singers, musicians, songwriters, executives, and technicians who have passed away in the past year. I didn't know that Will Jennings and J.D. Souther passed away - both last September.
I knew Will Jennings from his various collaborations with Steve Winwood but he had written/co-written songs that became big hits for other people including Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Eric Clapton, Mariah Carey, and B.B. King. He co-wrote "Up Where We Belong" which won an Oscar and was a Number 1 hit for Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.
I've known of J.D. Souther for decades for his work with the Eagles, co-writing some of their hits, as well as writing for or performing with Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Dan Fogelberg among others.

He was in many films in the 1970s and 1980s, such as Star-Spangled Girl, Play It Again Sam, Serpico, Annie Hall, Amityville 3D, Hannah and Her Sisters and many others.

I also found out that saxophonist David Sanborn passed away last year (May 12). His career started with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the late 60's and early 70's and he went on to be a "go-to" sax guy in the 70's for numerous artists such as Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, James Taylor. I remember him for the sax solo at the end of "The Sad Cafe," the last song of the B-Side of The Eagles' "The Long Run" album. It seemed like there were a ton of pop songs in the late 70's and early 80's that featured a sax solo. I remember seeing him on Letterman's show as well, sitting in with the band. This message has been edited. Last edited by: catskilleagle,

R&B singer Jerry Butler passed last week at 85. After having the 1958 hit, "For Your Precious Love" with the Impressions, he had three Top 10 hits as a solo artist between 1960 and 1969.
And now Roberta Flack has died at 88.

Roberta Flack has passed away at the age of 88. I will always remember her for her two best known hits: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing Me Softly With His Song.
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" went to #1 on the charts after being included in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film, "Play Misty for Me" where he was the disc jockey being stalked by the obsessive female fan.

Her passing was reported on the local and national news yesterday. She had such a beautiful voice - so clear. Eastwood was a big fan too.
Yeah, those two hits were all over the radio for decades but I hear just "Killing Me Softly" these days.
Also well-known in the 70's were her fantastic duets with Donny Hathaway, the biggest hits being, "Where is the Love?" and "The Closer I get to You." Last year, on Youtube I found a version of "The Closer I Get to You" that Flack did with Peabo Bryson.

On Saturday I saw on the news that David Johansen had passed away. For some people he was most famous when he performed under the name, "Buster Poindexter," with which he had that hit song, "Hot, Hot, Hot" in the 80's. He was also an actor appearing in several films.
He was definitely already well-known in New York City by the mid-70's from his time as the lead singer of New York Dolls. He went solo after that.
His passing was noted on "SNL" this past weekend. I think he appeared on the show in the 70's and 80's.

I have the 1962 Topps set "Casey and Kildare" which I came across recently in my collection but now having I tidied it away, I can't lay my hands on it to prepare a scan.
regards
John
