I watched at least the last hour of the Grammy's Sunday night, catching the "In Memoriam" segment in which they flash photos of various singers, musicians, songwriters, executives, and technicians who have passed away in the past year. I didn't know that Will Jennings and J.D. Souther passed away - both last September.

I knew Will Jennings from his various collaborations with Steve Winwood but he had written/co-written songs that became big hits for other people including Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Eric Clapton, Mariah Carey, and B.B. King. He co-wrote "Up Where We Belong" which won an Oscar and was a Number 1 hit for Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.

I've known of J.D. Souther for decades for his work with the Eagles, co-writing some of their hits, as well as writing for or performing with Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Dan Fogelberg among others.

I also found out that saxophonist David Sanborn passed away last year (May 12). His career started with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the late 60's and early 70's and he went on to be a "go-to" sax guy in the 70's for numerous artists such as Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, James Taylor. I remember him for the sax solo at the end of "The Sad Cafe," the last song of the B-Side of The Eagles "The Long Run" album. It seemed like there were a ton of pop songs in the late 70's and early 80's that featured a sax solo. I remember seeing him on Letterman's show as well, sitting in with the band.
