Here's a look at the card design of the other 3 Disney Treasures series that also featured sketches. These are from the collection, assuming they still have it, of the person I sold the Series 3 Dumbo (by Anna Lee) to about 9 years ago for $1,000

Their Ariel by Lisa Temming is from Series 2 and appears to be a companion card to an unseen Prince Eric. They were looking for it, but it was going to be tough to find we agreed. (Most of Temming's other sketches, but not the Prince Eric, are shown on the previous page).

Their Tinkerbell (by Olga Totieva) is from Holiday Treasures.

I had literally the same subject, Tinkerbell, on the only Holiday Treasures sketch I ever had, and the only sketch beside the Dumbo I ever found in a pack, after opening A LOT of it. That Tinkerbell I had, by coincidence, was drawn by Dorota Kotarba-Mendes, the same artist who drew the Series 1 Mickey Mouse that has just surfaced. I sold that for $800 in 2006. I got the redemption card literally a month before it was to expire and redeemed just in time. That Tinkerbell was very nicely detailed, and in color. I think, it too, would be worth a lot more now, nearly two decades down the line.

I wonder if that Mickey was added to the collection I showed above to complete their set of one from each series, or if they'd already accomplished that sometime during the last nine years.

Just looking on ebay and on Oct 16 a box of The Apprentice cards with an asking price of $ 995.00 (!!!) sold. Not sure if it went for that price, or something less. IMHO, that was quite high considering that the odds of finding the most desirable chase cards are low.

To me, that's a big gamble to spend $ 1000-1500 on a sealed box. Odds are you will get an auto of one of the Apprentice contestants, which sellers on ebay can't even get $ 5 for.

The only way it's worth it is if you somehow pull one of President Trump's 2 autos from the packs, but the odds are long on that.

Back in 2005 you could buy both of his autos for a mere $ 50 total. Those days are long gone.

I would bet these are people collecting the sealed boxes -- it doesn't seem to make sense to open them at that price.

It could be just a Trump fan giddy from the election win and one who didn't care how much it cost.

Did anyone here get into that set? Any case buyers?

I collected most of the autographs over the years -- they were all quite cheap at one point.

Bone Trading Card Series 1 Autograph Sketch Card 1994 - Comic Images Jeff Smith

I haven't seen one of these pop up in a while. I had a bid in much lower as the sketch seems a bit faded, but was really surprised to see it end at $621. 256708177455

I'm sure I have a couple of Promo cards. Other than the Trump sig I didn't find anything about the show or set I was interested in collecting. I never did get around to picking up his auto.

A Donald Trump Apprentice auto sold on ebay on Oct 27 for $ 1475.00.

Another one had an asking price of $ 1999.00 and someone snagged it by making a Best Offer

Spongebob Paul T sketch $550:

Not sure if this is related to being graded -- I don't see any others for sale or any recent sales.

Sponge Bob sketch sold for a Best Offer of $395 -- sold VERY fast.
May have gone higher if they waited.

255486060063

Another Spongebob Sketch 115360100344 -- this one brought $900. It was graded a BGS 9.0 -- I have no idea if that plays in to the pricing. The interesting thing about these Spongebob sketches is that they are all basically the same.

Another Spongebob sketch sold at auction today -- this one for $690.

There is a new Spongebob set out and sketch prices are high so I decided to check Terapeak for the 2009 Paul Tibbitt sketches, and wow.

All Buy it nows:

$1500 10.3.2025 326778935830
$3300 9.2.2025 116762438840 (BGS 9.5)
$3000 8.31.2025 116756065832 (BGS 9.5)
$3000 8.21.2025 116621065728 (BGS 9.5)

There was another one that appears to have sold, but I don't see it in Terapeak - 317243145869. Listed at $750, but damaged and unusual as it has a jellyfish. Unclear if this one sold.

This seller also claims there are only about 40 of these that were made, which seems highly unlikely. I'm curious what the source is on that as it isn't the first time I've heard a similar number.

Beyond the Sketches and Sponges, the regular 2009 base cards from Spongebob are doing very well, too. A 90 card set of series 1 just sold for almost $200 and that's the only one I've seen on Ebay in some time. I haven't seen any series 2 sets offered, but a few of the regular cards, the art masters' parodies, can sell for over $50 as singles.

Why are the sponge cards/packs so valued?

I don't remember these being particularly sought after when they came out, but clearly they've found an audience now. This may be why the sponges and such are so valuable.

The sketches are listed at 1:151 retail packs on Allender's site. I believe these were gravity feed boxes if memory serves. Regardless, I'm sure more than 40 or 50 were made.

Still curious, so if you find a definitive reason(s) please post again.

Target was my main source.

Well, if you want to see the sponge cards up close I will have a set and some singles at the Oct 17-18 Chicago show. I am looking to complete some series 1 sets. Have some chase and series 2 packs too. Maybe even a series 2 set. Dance

Spongebob is huge with 20-year olds with money who remember it as a kid and it's also huge with older cannabis consumers. I'm not sure that completely answers it. Maybe there's another angle.

In general the surge in prices seems to be due to the new 2025 Topps Spongebob set that is doing well and bringing new people into collecting the older Spongebob cards -- love to see it.

Back in the 2010s, Bongo Comics published a Spongebob comic book that lasted about 85 issues.

This was the same company which published the Simpsons Comics from the 90s to the 2010s.

I was surprised to see that for the past few years, the back issues of the Spongebob comic are RED HOT. Some of the 85 issues, especially the very early ones and the final ones, are VERY hard to find. Many sell on ebay for $ 25 and up for single issues !

I have a complete run of the Simpsons, but now I am kicking myself for not having purchased the Spongebob comic when it came out. Frown

I'm glad to say I did collect the full set of Spongebob comics as I was collecting the Simpsons Comics. I basically bought every comic Bongo ever made. The funny thing, I guess, is that I've never read even one Spongebob comic and as far as the actual episodes, I've only ever seen memes and GIFs of the characters online, and have never seen any of the actual TV cartoons or either of the movies, so I don't have much of an idea as to why the show is popular. I also bought a big lot of random cards about 15 years ago, and it had both of the 2009 Topps Spongebob sets with most of the inserts (no sponges or sketches, though), so I even have those, too.
