Well, I didn't expect much and that's exactly what I got. This is my opinion of it...

What was wrong with the movie...
Gunn said this was a fresh start and didn't want to rehash anything - and then starts with the John Williams theme and title style of Superman: The Movie. Superman himself ended up on his back either bleeding or weakened more than he was upright. Didn't see enough of Lois and Jimmy was the best thing in the Daily Planet. The rest were there for a name-check. Didn't like the way Ma Kent was portrayed. She's brought up an alien but doesn't seem to have a handle on how a smart phone works. Hawkgirl. Why? Didn't contribute anything and I would rather have seen Dr. Light (Kimiyo Hoshi) instead. Mr. Terrific was good, but his pod was made in the same shop as the Milano - same colour and seating arrangement with a reupholster. Green Lantern. Better than I thought from what I saw in the trailers, but does Gunn know how a power ring works? The light is continuous from the ring, not throwing a gesture in the general direction he wants a construct. Supergirl. Liked the look. I've been informed that in the last 10 years, Supergirl has been completely retconned so I can't really comment on her being able to get drunk, call Krypto hers, or having to wear a coat because it's chilly.
What was good in the movie...
Nicholas Hoult - best portrayal of Luthor in a movie by a country mile. This is the evil SOB I want to see more of. Absolutely nailed it! David Corenswet - not too bad, and I can see him growing into the role, but he needs a script that serves him better. Although I've raved about Hoult, this movie could possibly have been better if they had started with Brainiac.
What was puzzling in the movie...
What happened to everyone else that was in the alternate dimension? We only saw the humans being rescued. What was the point of the two post credit scenes?

We saw the movie yesterday, and I have to say your synopsis was pretty accurate. I did enjoy the the Superman 1978 feel and theme music, since I am older and remember that movie when it came out.

My problems with the movie:
The portrayals of Ma and Pa Kent were weak, as she was apparently there for comedic effect and he barely spoke during his scenes. Too many other characters were shown or named, but they had little if anything to do with the story (Daily Planet employees, Hawkgirl, Supergirl). Nathan Fillion's role as Guy Gardner seemed to personify the character well, but I never was a fan, so this really did nothing for me. Totally agree on the two post-credit scenes, as they made virtually no sense.

What I liked:
THIS is the Lex Luthor the movies have been missing. He has an obvious chip on his shoulder about superheroes, mostly because they take the attention away from him.

Overall, a decent movie. I would probably see it again to catch the things I missed the first time, but I don't see myself paying full ticket price for a second showing.

It really is a movie that you need to check your brain at the door and just enjoy the ride. Don't ask too many questions. I counted several scenes that were memorable rip offs of previous films.

It made more sense in the 1978 title but why does Lex need to keep making nefarious deals to acquire land?? Seems like he has enough resources to get it himself.

I thought that the whole Boravia and Smallville plots could have been left out.

I guess if you are going to use the Simple Jack version of Green Lantern, you need Nathan Fillion to bring in some level of cool. Cool

For me this was a fun time at the movies but I don't see myself re-watching it all that much in the future.

Fantastic Four gets my vote between the two films.

Saw it this weekend with our kids. I'd give it 3 out of 4.

Negatives:

Ma and Pa Kent were portrayed as dumb country folk. He was a Wilford Brimley type character.

Was it necessary to include the light profanity ? They used the "S" word several times. Even Superman himself said it. And did Supergirl say the "B" word at the end ? What was the purpose of the salty language ?

SPOILERS AHEAD ****

This is the plot in a nutshell. Boravia is threatening to invade a neighboring country. Lex Luthor sells weapons to the former. Meanwhile, Lex manipulates Jor-El's video to convince the U.S. government that Superman wants to take over the world and, therefore, is a threat to humanity. Superman is then arrested and thrown into a pocket universe. Eventually, he escapes with the help of his superhero allies. Jimmy Olsen learns through Lex's girlfriend that Lex has a deal with Boravia to take over part of the country next door and to rename it after himself. The Daily Planet exposes this plan. Superman fights and defeats Lex's supervillains and Luthor is arrested. Superman's friends, Green Lantern, Hawkwoman, Mr. Terrific, and Metamorpho, stop the Boravian invaders. Supergirl shows up in the final scene. Her movie is coming out in 2026.
