The new film "Caught Stealing" with Austin Butler and the new "Toxic Avenger" are not doing well. "Freakier Friday" has made 82 M but apparently Disney expected a bigger hit. The first one in 2003 made much more.

Everyday is freaky now. Friday is no big deal. The Harkins theater chain added a free ticket to my account for "Caught Stealing" good thru tomorrow, but I'm not sure I'll use it. I guess the idea with these is that they are trying to pump up the first week grosses a bit and to that end, hopefully I'd bring someone with me (which I would). I think that's the same reason why I get a free single ticket to every A24 movie, too, with my membership in their club, which is only $5 a month, and includes other benefits. Those A24 free tickets are good on opening weekend only, though, so they're trying to juice the earliest returns. As of now, we're planning to see Toxic Avenger on Thursday. It just checks too many boxes to not. This message has been edited. FANTASTIC FOUR has now passed DRAGON, making it the # 6 film of the year, domestically.

In 2022, Avatar 2 made 684 M domestically and was the second biggest film of the year, behind TOP GUN 2. Do you think the third film coming this year will do as well ?

The recent "Downton Abbey" film flopped. Has made only about 20 M in the U.S.

Tron: Ares made 33 M this weekend but it cost at least 180 M to make. Overseas it grossed only about 20 M.

Looking at the box office numbers, unless we have some major hits over the next 2 months, this year may turn out to be the lowest grossing year at the movies since 2001, not counting the COVID years of 2020-2021. There is no way that the numbers will reach 8.5 billion plus like we had in 2023 and 2024. Right now the domestic box office is only at 6.6 billion. The only big films coming between now and Dec 31 are Avatar, Wicked 2 and Spongebob from what I can see.

I saw both Downton Abbey 3 and Tron: Ares. Shame Downton did not do well, it was a good film but it has been a long time since the series ended and the movies all stand alone and so a lot of viewers likely have no reason to watch until they are ready. Tron: Ares was just a bad movie. I went on opening night with my son and his friends. We all walked out disappointed. Terrible story, terrible acting (even Gillian Anderson gave a cardboard performance) and the worst a movie can be -boring. Yes, the special effects were good but not anything that was new.

Regarding Tron: Ares, people are now placing the blame on Jared Leto, saying that he is not an A list star who can carry a movie. They cite to this film, and House of Gucci, and Morbius as examples of his flops. I still think of him as the boyfriend on "My So-Called Life" from back in 1994. ![]()

I wonder how much of a market there is for Tron any more. It was groundbreaking in the 1980s, nowadays it looks like any other fancy blockbuster.

I read that people were upset that the new TRON didn't have Bruce Boxleitner in it (Bruce said that he was not asked to return) and others complained that it had very little connection to the first 2 films.

In terms of domestic box office, TRON won't even make it to the Top 20 of the year. Neither will the Leonardo DeCaprio film "One Battle After Another" which has so far grossed 57 M in the U.S. but reportedly cost 130 M to make.
