On one of the local "classic hits" stations this evening, the DJ announced that he wanted to break the format for a few minutes to honor her, playing "Jolene."

I'm sure the other local 70's-80's-90's station played "Islands in the Stream" at least a couple of times today. It's the only station that still plays it - one of the great duets/sing-alongs of any genre.

So true. She was always a ray of positivity in a tumultuous world. And she never disappeared, forever remaining relevant. A huge loss for the world, RIP.

Tim Curry has passed away at 80 years old. The poor man never recovered from a stroke he suffered more than ten years ago, but he did remain visible while impaired as best as possible. Of course, he is best remembered for Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise, but he had a long career and was an excellent actor without all the camp too.

In recent years he has signed autograph cards and stickers for a wide range of card products. His signature before and after his stroke are obviously very different, as his handwriting was severely affected. RIP Mr. Curry.

Wow, he appeared in a bunch of sets.
Rocky Horror (FTCC, Comic Images)
Skybox Three Musketeers
Topps Home Alone 2
Topps Annie
Eclipse Loaded Weapon
Topps The Shadow
Upper Deck Congo
Star Wars (multiple)
Pop Century (multiple)

I'm trying to think of any other actor who has cards from so many IP's/franchises. Maybe Shatner? Christopher Lee?

Add those signed sketch cards from Hollywood Trading two titles, Hollywood Masterpieces and Horror Legends. All Curry's autographs are either stickers or cuts. The sketch quality varies by a lot, but some of them are nice looking, especially a few Pennywise portraits in Hollywood Horror Legends.

Interesting thought. Outside of Star Trek and Twilight Zone, what other IPs would Shatner be in?

Might be hard to figure out a bit player who has a ton of TV appearances and is in numerous set. Curry may be the king, here!

Depends on how you are counting sets? Different franchises/titles? Different years? Different manufacturers?

In addition to autograph cards from various years of Americana, Pop Century, Leaf and Star Trek products, I have Shatner signatures cards from In the Game (Canadian Hockey) and Keepsake Edition. I'm pretty sure he must have been in one of those Allen & Ginter checklists at some point. Plus he had his own card series called Tek Wars or TekWorld at different times.

I never picked up his Twilight Zone autograph card because I missed it when it was still reasonable. He's been in a lot of sets, but I don't know if he is the overall winner. I think there is an old thread on Card Talk that discussed it already, but I can't recall the results.

Tim Curry also played an excellent villain in 'Legend'. His demon in that film was amazing.

Right there. What Kevin said. That make up was astounding and shoulda won an academy award for Best makeup or whatever. I think it got beaten by Driving Miss Daisy. That was about when I gave up on the Oscars..

Tim Curry was also the doctor in "The Hunt for Red October. I have no idea how many times I've seen that movie. Sadly, no one did a card set for that one.

I can't believe I forgot Outer Limits.

I wouldn't count sets where he's just William Shatner, but the first 4 you named fit the bill.

You didn't give up when Annie Hall beat Star Wars? Big Grin

My little 6-year-old self thought Oscar was that dirty man on the Odd Couple. But that would be a good reason to dislike the awards, but they seem to alienate viewers at regular intervals, so it was bound to happen to me at some point.

Shatner was also in a four-card promo set that was included with the “Free Enterprise” DVD. Funny movie, but I digress…

I was mad when Star Wars lost, but it won a bunch of other awards, and at age 7, I was able to let it go. I've since seen Annie Hall (multiple times, like Star Wars) and come to understand that Annie Hall deserved the Oscar.

But when I was 12 and "Gandhi" beat "E.T.", well, one of my therapists says it all started right there. (Kidding. I've also since seen "Gandhi" and come to understand that it deserved the Oscar that year.)

Regarding Shatner, he was also on Big Bang Theory and Psych, but I'm not sure if he's on any of the Cryptozoic cards for those shows.

He signed for neither and I don't think he made the base cards. Psych was a good show and had good cards, but it's hardly mentioned now.

1981 - "Chariots of Fire" won and beat out "Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark". Pretty sure the only thing anyone might remember about "Chariots" is the theme song.

He was also on the oversized card. I think it was given out at shows - not sure.

I just ran across an article with a number of celebrity deaths listed. In the old days you heard more passings on the news, but unless they were longtime big stars, they don't have time now. Admittedly, most viewers aren't going to know the 60's-80's performers we would recognize so I'm glad we have the two threads on the forum.

Voice actor Peter Cullen passed on August 26 at the age of 85. He was the voice of Optimus Prime of the Transformers and Eeyore of Winnie the Pooh specials.

Tedde Moore, who played Ralphie's teacher in "A Christmas Story," passed away on August 5 at the age of 79.

Vincent Pastore of "The Sopranos" was found dead on August 1 (age 80).

Oscar winner Brenda Fricker ("My Left Foot") passed away on July 16 at the of 81. She's also known for her role as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. I think I have a card with her on it.

Actor Hal Williams, who had a recurring role as Officer Smitty on "Sanford and Son," passed away on July 15 at 91. He later starred on the sitcom "227."

Star of the 70's show, "Emergency," Randolph Mantooth, died on July 9 at the age of 80. He later did a lot of soap opera work from the 80's to 2000's.

Kjell Nilsson, who played Lord Humungus in "The Road Warrior," passed away July 2.

Victor Willis, lead singer of the Village People, died on June 30 at the age of 74.

Actor Michael Byrne died on June 20 at the age of 82. He was the Nazi commander in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." I also remember him as the wily Russian spy in "The Sum of All Fears."

Legendary TV director and co-creator of "Cheers," James Burrows, passed away on June 19 at the age of 85.

Comedian/actor Tom Dreesen passed away on June 17 at the age of 86. I remember seeing him on talk shows in the 70's and 80's. Sinatra asked Dreesen to open for him and he did for several years. Letterman liked bringing him on the show because he had so many show business stories and they'd known each other so long.

Ronnie Schell of "Gomer Pyle: USMC," died on June 12 - age 94. He guest-starred on a lot of shows. I remember him from an episode of "The Dukes of Hazzard."

Ronald LaPread, bassist and co-founding member of the 70's-80's supergroup, The Commodores, passed away in May at the age of 74.

Oscar-winning film editor, Marcia Lucas, died on May 27 at the age of 80. She was married to George Lucas across the 70's and into the 80's. She's been credited for piecing together "Star Wars" and "The Return of the Jedi" into better stories.

Actor Grizz Chapman passed away on May 22. He's best known for playing Grizz, one of Tracy Jordan's (Tracy Morgan) bodyguards on "30 Rock." That was a great show.

The list is long. This post covers less than half of it - people I remember.
