Is there any reason to believe that the "Guests" number doesn't just come from a random number generator in the board's source code?

It defies all logic that 1430 people were lurking around here at once.

But it said there were 1430 guest watchers so I take that as gospel.
Or can anyone explain how it is decided how many people are watching.
