If that sample Bartarang card can go for $1800, what does that say about the rarity. At different times in the past, I heard someone say that about 100 of those sample sets were distributed. Another source thought around 200 existed. I'm beginning to think it's more like 100 or perhaps fewer based on how few have been for sale during the card's slow but rather steady increase in value over the years.

Rolling on the floor. Yes, I sit around, rubbing my hands and waiting to pounce on some poor soul with a "dissenting opinion". Or at least that's the mental image I get. Actually, I do like to talk to knowledgeable card collectors who have opposite ideas from mine because that's how you learn things you don't know or see things from a different angle. The only time an opinion can really be deemed wrong is if it's based on something that is factually wrong or is extended beyond the point where the facts would reasonably apply. And that's just my opinion. To this subject, I was never a master set builder. Not even back in the days when it could be done, but there was always the debate of exactly what a "master set" meant. To be totally accurate, I think you have to say everything. Everything on the checklist, everything in packs, everything not in packs, everything you could order or win that had an official licensed manufacturer's tie-in to the set. Sell sheets, promos, samples, uncut sheets if they were made available, binders, variant cards, error cards, corrected cards, insert cards, parallel cards, numbered cards, archive box exclusive cards, every hit of any type inserted or redeemable, the redemption card cancelled and expired, and if I missed anything just add it in. Now of course how far master set collectors wanted to take this was up to them, their finances, and the sheer ability to find some very limited components. Some thought you also needed to keep a sealed box. Or an empty box and open pack wrapper. There was no end to what some thought they should keep until sketch card hits became common in various products and master set collectors went nuts trying to get one of every licensed artist. Eventually someone decided it was OK to have just one sketch from anyone on the checklist, but the dam had burst. The 1/1 cards were here. The 1/1, 1/5, 1/10, 1/25 cards, they all effectively ended the master sets on mainstream popular titles. It was not just that average collectors couldn't afford them, they are too limited to find. You are always going to have those holes in your collection and master set collectors hated holes. They lost all purpose when they knew they couldn't get it all, no matter how long they looked. I personally knew several people who collected every set on certain big franchise titles for 10 years or more, not masters but close to it, and they just stopped when there was too much they couldn't complete because of short printed cards and all the exclusives. So thanks for the opportunity to get that off my chest Jess. And thanks to chesspieceface for that detailed breakdown of a product that I did know about. Sounds like you do indeed have a master, maybe the only one to that extent.

Nice summary chesspieceface, very accurate. Just to be clear, I'm of the belief that ANY "sample" Bartarang cards origin began by it's removed from a sheet. I know of no other way to get one. Whether there are 50 or possibly 100 (as chesspieceface mentioned - 50 front and 50 back) I don't know. I always thought there were only 50 Samples total.

It definitely says I shouldn't have sold my double of the Bartarang Sample single card for $108! The sale was almost 20 years ago, and that was much more than I'd paid for it, 10 years prior to that. It went back to Australia from me in California, so that was some round trip for it. Same thing with a matching redeemed 3 card "Woo-Hoo" set (#'d/1250) in 2004. I kept that extra set for only 5 years or so before sending it back to Oz. Obviously I should held it longer, but again, I made the profit that was to be made back at that time. I also likely used the money to get some other cards (or comics) I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise. The Ebay of 20-25 years ago was an extremely economical place to build a collection of anything really, in part because international shipping didn't cost much more than domestic did. It was an incredible bargain, worldwide, certainly measured against today's rates. I also sold a couple of binder cards numbered /500 back then for about $120 each. Those, too, have a substantially higher value today. One of those was also sent back to Australia, so I'll just put that one in the "circle o' life" file, man. This message has been edited. I think I'm going to list it on eBay to see if any buzz will happen at a "Make me sell it" price.

Now is certainly the time. People have officially gone nuts. As soon as Disney puts Simpsons character cards in one of their Topps Chrome sets, the 1/1 Superfractors of those will immediately become the most valuable Simpson cards ever made, roughly 40 years into the life of the property. I am not kidding. If ever issued, a single card that features some reused clip art of Homer Simpson on a gold-toned chrome card with a little 1/1 on it would instantly be as or more valuable than a Lucky Day redemption, an Art D'Bart Matt Groening sketch, a numbered Bartarang redemption card, the actual Bartarang prize, and master sets of the remaining cards from 1990 & 2002 Topps, 1993 & 1994 Skybox, 1996 Tempo, 2000 & 2001 Inkworks, and the various Artbox sets combined.
The Sample Cards were issued as individual single cards by Tempo. The complete set is Homer As (7), Bartarang Redemption, Woo Hoo Set (3), and the Binder Card. They all say "Sample" on them where the Serial numbering usually goes. There were no sample versions of the plastic chase cards (Springfield's Finest set & 7 Duffs die-cut set). Any cards that were hand or machine cut after the fact from the chase-card sheets that Tempo sold directly will not have a serial number and will also not say "Sample" where the serial number would've been. Cards cut from sheets will be totally blank in that spot. This message has been edited. I see it up there. It is curious as to why the redemption card isn't hole-punched. It may have just been an oversight or perhaps it was redeemed so close to Tempo folding, they just figured something like "well, no need to punch it, we won't be around if someone tries to redeem it again, anyhow." Good luck with the sale! Here's the letter that came from Tempo with the redeemed 3 card set. If I'm remembering correctly, I had to go to the bank and get a money order in Australian funds and mail that and the redemption card by registered mail to Tempo in Australia. Even so, this was 30 years ago, so the total cost for all that was something around $10. Looking at the text of the letter, Project Manager Trent Panteli was definitely right about a few things. It was a very good idea to keep the three cards together and in mint condition, and that if that was done, the cards would increase in value over the years, which they surely have. I do wonder where their "Redemption Cards Register File" ended up after they went kaput. My guess is it went into the circular file. Finally, I no longer have the set that I got that letter with. I was able to get a matched number set (all 150/XXX) of the Homer As..., Woo Hoo set, and Binder Card, so the Woo Hoo set I actually redeemed became expendable. As I mentioned, I sold that to someone in Australia, so those cards ended up logging some serious airline miles. ____________________ Everywhere around this burg they're running out of verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Thank you for the letter. I do also have another Woo Hoo set redeemed where the hole punch is there. I forgot about the letter though. Thx

Yeah, I was thinking about your observation about how collectors have a hard time agreeing on definitions of even common terms - exceptions or not. I didn't want to sound like I was making fun of Billyd2, because you're right, it's always great to talk to knowledgeable collectors with other opinions. They might have known someone from the company or be like Chesspiece, a collector who bought now-impossible-to-find stuff when it was new. It's fun to see or hear about someone else's collection because we've already seen our own hundreds of times. Some items across hobbies that we might have heard about but didn't jump at then are now quite valuable. I bought several of those sample sets, and like Chesspiece sold/traded a few things over the years, but I kept the Simpsons one, the Peter Rabbit, and one of the Barbie sets just to have some sample of the samples. The Simpsons one is my favorite.

Many thanks Chesspieceface for the email and images, I am interested in knowing about the cards per se but as to wanting them I am not interested. Although I have sets and promo cards of the subject matter from various issuers I have never seen the TV program nor am I wanting to see it. regards John ____________________
