I wanted to share a unique piece of non-sport history from my time in the industry. I worked directly for the printing company that handled SkyBox’s manufacturing runs in the early and mid-1990s. When reviewing my materials several weeks ago that I have saved, I found this card (along with the known SB1 card too). It appears to be a completely uncatalogued variant of the 1994 Lion King #SB1 Super Bowl promo.
This version features a black banner in the top-right corner that reads:
"NFL SUPER BOWL CARD SHOW, January 27 - 30, 1994 Atlanta, Georgia"

From a manufacturing standpoint, I can verify that this banner is not an aftermarket overprint or a localized stamp. It is integrated into the 4-color process (CMYK) layout directly on the printing plates. It seems that SkyBox intentionally set up this separate graphic file for the 4-day fan convention venue running alongside the game. Given how localized these convention runs were, has anyone in the non-sport promo community ever run across another surviving copy of this specific venue layout?

Since you printed for SkyBox, have you ever come across the promos on the 1996 Mickey Mouse and Friends Fun Cards set ? I have only seen the regular cards plus scans of the promos.

Welcome to Card Talk. I once saw an odd Sandman prototype, something that was apparently unreleased, in-house only, but later made it to Ebay. That was from 1994 - number printed unknown. Do you have that?

I don't have that one either. The other cards non sports cards I have from then are Spiderman, Silver Surfer, Hulk, and one other that I can't remember at the moment. They were all part of the Joe Jusko designed Marvel Masterpiece in 1992. I have some that are Prototype cards and some that are the actual promo cards.

I don't really have any knowledge about the non sports cards, just have them from my time there. I will say that I have learned A LOT over the past 3 weeks about the specific cards that I do have.

Hey David,

The funny thing about that one is that Bill DeFranzo once had one of those for sale/trade for $6. That means he had at least one other in his collection. That one certainly seems to be rare but maybe more than just a handful exist.

I wonder if they printed them, Skybox didn't use them, chucked them out, and you have one of the only survivors. It is SO weird that no one has come across one of these (that we know of) in 3 decades. A Disney license and certainly the Lion King are collectible with not just card collectors, so you'd think one of these would pop up here and there over the years. There's certainly other cards from the Superbowl card show in 94 and 95 that are out there, why not this one?

I've always wondered the same about the one that was said to be given at the Superbowl. How any thousands of people go to the Superbowl and only a handful of the original SB1 have surfaced? The Flintstones NFL Superbowl 4-card sheet isn't ultra rare, those turn up and are not pricey, so why did those make their way to the secondary market and not the Lion King SB1. I wish I could find a person who was at the Superbowl that year. And the Superbowl Card Show.

Just thinking. It's what I TRY to do anyhow.

The image is unavailable to me here in the UK as it does not comply with UK child data protection regulations and the new Online Safety Act. Can someone not using it do a repost please.

I added the PCE logo because I want to keep this image as exclusive as possible. It's also to prevent homemade card people from having an easy time reproducing it.

I agree it's odd. I've been researching this a lot over the past few weeks since I discovered what I had saved is so unique (I have one of each version...the known SB1 and the NFL Card Show banner version). Yesterday I discovered a post on Blowout Cards forum that is VERY interesting to me. The post was made on 12-24-23 and it says:
"I don't think the story about the SB1 Lion King promo is quite right. The reason I say this is because I received a few of these SB1 cards, and I never went to the actual Super Bowl game that year. I went to the NFL Experience for the Super Bowl, and got the cards there. So I think it may be true that they were given out at the actual game, I think they also gave them out at the NFL Experience for the game that year which any fan can purchase entrance to."

I've never read this in my research and it would align perfectly with having this card show specific version. I tried to reach out to the original poster after seeing it....I haven't heard back yet.

Oh, and my theory about the Flinstones surviving more than the LK is that the Flintstones were a beloved, well-known cartoon. The Lion King was still months away from it's premiere. People didn't know about it or care....especially the people at the actual Super Bowl game.

But its Disney. Even then Disney was a bigtime collectible. Flintstones in 1994 ... meh...maybe the nostalgia types would dig it but I can beleive people dropping those on the ground before the Disney card. Plus its smaller so easier to lug around,
