Batman Holo Series set
I apologize if this has been asked before in another topic, but I didn't see it anywhere. My question is this: why is is so difficult to find a base set of the Batman Holo Series cards? I have been looking for a set of these for some time now, and simply cannot locate any. Are they dirt cheap and no one wants to pay to list on the auction site, or they are so expensive that no one wants to part with one? I know the packs had the Overpower hologram insert cards in them, but I would think that people looking for those would have lots of base sets left over. Is my logic wrong here, or have I just missed something?

Thanks for any help anyone can give !

Boxes are tough to find, so there probably are not a lot of current box breaks on these. I do know of at least one NSU advertiser that has these, so they can be found.

I read somewhere -- long ago -- that the production run on these was absurdly low for some reason.

No clue what they sell for now, probably not a ton, but there just aren't a lot out there.

I think that might have been NSU, and it was stated by Steve Charendoff. It would be interesting to get an idea of actual production numbers, were they low for the 1990's or low compared to today's output?

The earlier Superman Holo series, issued right in the middle of the days the presses really ran, were released in several different styles and I don't think they sold well. As I recall, those the super rare retail boxes with the RED holograms came out a good 6 months (maybe longer) after the normal retail and hobby boxes had hit, so I think that might've been an attempt on Skybox's part to get rid of the unsold product.
The Batman set came out the next year (and the technology was already much improved making it far superior to the Superman set), and by then, production numbers across the board were rapidly decreasing. Further, the Batman Holoseries, unlike the Superman holoseries, was only issued in Hobby packs, so without Target/Kmart/Kaybee Toys and the like selling them, that alone would've reduced the original quantity manufactured signifcantly. Finally, the playable 6 card Overpower chase set (cards were found in in every other box or so) have been popular for years now and singles can sell for up to $100 each so that resulted in most of the remaining boxes being broken down years ago in the search of those Overpower chase cards, which were themselves holograms.

As a specialist DC collector, I have the holo sets on a 'notify me' search on eBay so I can tell you there's been 1 Batman box in the last couple of years. Superman is slightly more available, but not if it's the boxes with reds, which are impossible to find. They're expensive for 90s comic standards (about $50 for Batman box, less for Superman) and the base sets are in the $10-$20 range.

I agree with chesspieceface about the likely reasons, though I think the Overpower cards are about 1 per 5 boxes.

Thanks for the info, guys. I knew about the Overpower cards, which I figured might have resulted in lots of boxes being broken. However, I was not aware of the more limited distribution channels of this release (actually, I just didn't do the research on that aspect of the set...)

It's interesting that I can find the insert cards (H1-H4) very easily and cheaply, but the base set is virtually non-existent. Very infrequently, a set will show up on eBay, but the prices the sellers want is usually not worth it. Not sure why the insert set is so easy to find, but the base set is elusive. According to Jeff Allender's site, a box should have yielded slightly less than 1.5 sets, so two boxes would be almost three complete sets. Additionally, there were gold and blue parallel sets, so I wouuld think boxes got broken for those as well.

Email response sent to Tangent.

According to my lists I have at least one set available for trade. . . coming up with a trade value sounds potentially problematic. . .

I also think I have a sealed box around here somewhere. . .

Just out of curiosity, I have two different promo cards for this series. Are they rare at all, or are they easy to find?

There's a very common promo (unnumbered - scan here) Not sure what your other promo is. There is a 1 per box (but fairly available) clearcel insert that you might have thought is a promo. There's a fairly rare promo with Kenner on it which is from the History of Batman set. Post a scan (or sent it to me - email in profile) and I can try and work out what it is.

Feebay! I couldn't express it better!

The other 'promo' I thought I had is just a base card. My mistake, it was inserted in my misc. card album because it's the only card I have from that set.

If anyone ever wants to part with a complete Blue Emblem set. Shoot me an email @ ntreantafelo@yahoo.com

I've been looking for one for years as well as the Superman "red" hologram set.

I have a lot of these cards, including (I think) a full set of the Silver, Gold, and Blue cards. If someone is interested in trading, I'm a collector of the Overpower Card series. I know of these cards specifically because of the Batman Overpower Holo Hero inserts.

If you are interested please let me know. johnnyvtec2@gmail.com

Thanks,

John

It's been a while but I seem to remember there were only 4 cards in a pack for around 2.99. Which at the time, seemed like a lot. I have a set. I more then likely have a stack of singles somewhere. If I find them I will let you know.

My principal collection is DC & Marvel trading cards.

I'm also for years have been searching for the Batman Holo Series Box. Last year I was participating in maybe 3 or 4 auction for boxes. But never manage to win any box because prices really go to over estimate.

For the Superman Holos. I still need to complete the golden set. I have a unopened box for that reason. The red cards are more difficult to see the Batman Holo Boxes. Last year in eBay I only saw one, but it wasn't sealed factory and not have all the packs.

Also some body contact me asking if I had the red cards to sale or trade.

I was actually able to make a trade and get the set, finally. Thanks !

See my earlier post for silver/gold (tending to $20 if none have been available for a while). The blue is much rarer and in the $200 range.
