After about six years of work — including the last three focused heavily on the site build itself — the revamped Promo Card Encyclopedia is finally live. It's free to use. Promo Card Encyclopedia The new site builds upon the original Promo Card Encyclopedia book series, last published in 2008, and expands the concept into a much larger searchable online database/archive dedicated to promo cards and related non-sport material. The database currently contains over 40,000 entries, with front and back card images, detailed card information, provenance/history notes, and researched rarity classifications for most cards. I am also continuing to add sell sheets and other related promotional material as the archive grows. This project started simply from my longtime interest in promo cards and wanting to preserve as much hobby information and history as possible in one place. The goal has always been to create something useful for collectors, researchers, artists, publishers, and fans of the hobby. The launch transition is still ongoing and there will definitely be adjustments and improvements along the way, but I wanted to finally share the new version with the hobby community. Promo Card Encyclopedia Please feel free to share this message where you will. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged the project over the years. This message has been edited. Congrats! One recommendation, change the title text to <title>Promo Card Encyclopedia</title>. As it is, it's all lowercase and no spaces. The reason being is when you bookmark it, it reads easier. And it appears nicer in the browser tab.

Your next step is to allow us to have accounts and add checkboxes to everything to check what we have. :-)

I've been kicking the tires and looking under the hood of your site and it's frankly a masterpiece! I can see that you've put thousands of hours into it. I will be contributing images to the few cards you are still missing the images of, but for the other 99.98% with complete image, description, and rarity level of each promo, I'll be checking in constantly to compare eBay listings to your rarity level designation to get a baseline on prices. the rarity level I think is a great idea rather than each card having a specific value because that is always changing depending, sometimes, on the flavor of the day. Your way is much more anchored in reality. I look forward to spending more time on PCE Online in the future. Thanks for doing this to advance collector knowledge on this arcane area of collecting. I'm impressed and I invite everyone to check it out. It's colossal! ____________________

Congratulations, Todd! It took longer than you thought but you stayed with it. You took breaks when you needed them and recharged. There are people who have collected cards for decades but they lose interest and leave the hobby. What does Todd do? Yeah, he collected promos and left the hobby for a while but then he comes back and takes on an even bigger project than his previous projects and that was updating his previous projects with all the newer cards plus all the older cards that have been unearthed since 2008. The site is an incredible resource. I hope you get some companies to buy ad space and you have riches dumped on you - the riches you deserve for all the work you've done across decades now. Thank you!! Jess

Thank you to all who've replied. Bassam, you mentioned two things: ads and checklists for users. My intent with ads is to focus on specific avenues such as publishers, ebay sellers, Kickstarter projects, and artists/small press card creators. My plan is to make PCE not just a digital museum, but to also be a hub for collectors to connect with said creators and sellers in the hobby. So no Google ads, no flashing graphics, and only folks associated with the hobby, be it promo cards or retail releases, will be asked to advertise. Regarding user interaction, such as keeping track of your cards on the site, or a forum, is not something I'm considering at this time. But who knows, as it grows, perhaps that will come into play. There is still much to do on the site as it is, and taking on more at this time for a one-horse operation is more than I can handle.

First off, I have never collected promo cards, but I have acquired quite a few over the years. Mainly the free ones when they used to be handed out at shows or were in NSU or were offered for sets I was buying. Some I kept in unorganized plastic boxes; many were tossed out for lack of interest and space. Probably shouldn't have done that, but at least it makes them rarer for somebody. So I am your uneducated test viewer Todd and here's what I think. Your new online Promo Card Encyclopedia is really well put together. I would call it a professional site rather than something thrown together by an amateur expert. I don't know how much you did yourself or how much you had to outsource, but you hit the ground running with a Beta product that works right away and I can see why you took so much time on it. All the promo collectors owe you for this one and I'm sure their input, and you know they always have input, will make it even better. Now here's something I would say for all the non-promo collectors who don't know exactly what they are looking to find. With search engines, you always have to use the right words and if you don't know the right words you don't connect, even though what you are seeking may be there. I went in and tried very general words without many filters, just to see what would show up. The Issuer was the easiest to jump into with or without a title. For instance, I got results just using Dexter and Breygent Marketing and I got more card results with no issuer. When I went to see what came up for Non-Sport Update or Philly Card Show however, only one card showed. So without knowing the issuer, groupings like that don't work. Your list of issuers is probably the longest I've ever seen. I knew less than 10% of them and just clicking on names brought up products and cards I never heard about. So this is really interesting for card collectors who may not turn into promo collectors but can see what other products they may have missed. If you could dumb the search words down to include groupings that less knowledgeable people might use like say simple all promos in NSU Magazine, that would help as the promos are likely already there under the Issuer. Again, thanks so much for all the work you put into this, and I hope all Card Talkers give it try. Congratulations Todd!

Those are merely ranges i had in place for myself and not values. I will be taking those ranges out asap, as they are not to be there.

Firstly, thank you for the note, I appreciate your words very much. The search function is at its infancy still and will be tweaked and adjusted with time (not too much time though). With the issuer dropdown, yeah there are so many little companies with short lives that have put out a card or two for their projects over the last 30 years that it's a bear of a list. Maybe I dont need that dropdown, maybe I do. Maybe I need check boxes for filters. Theres a lot of ways to set it up, and it will take some time to figure out the best way to do it. Ive gotten good input so far regarding that. I dont quite understand your example "When I went to see what came up for Non-Sport Update or Philly Card Show however, only one card showed. So without knowing the issuer, groupings like that don't work." so if you want to go further into that Im all ears. Using the sites contact email will be the best way to communicate your thoughts.

Sure, I would imagine you will be fielding many emails in the coming weeks. I liked the Issuer drop down; the only problem might be if the promos don't really indicate the same maker. Just to finish off my thought about the search words here, I am speaking from the viewpoint of a person who may not know the specifics of the promo they are looking for. If you have the card in hand or on a scan, you can fill in some or all of those checklist boxes. If you are coming with a grouping or maybe even a location, you don't know what promo you are looking for. That may still read unclear, so I would refer as an example to a thread in this promo section that was originally started by JOHN LEVITT and updated with others along the way. All those promos came free with NSU editions, but are all from various products and manufacturers. Also on Card Talk, other members have made up threads lumping promos into certain categories. If I didn't have that NSU list and I wanted to find them all on your site, could I not use NSU as the issuer? Well NO, because NSU was not the issuer. But it would be so much simpler if you had a grouping that would display under the magazine's name. If I wanted to know all the promos handed out at the Philly shows or handed out at NY ComicCons, they could be grouped under the event title. That's what I meant by dumbing it down for those who don't have promo card specifics but may know how or where they were distributed, and I hope I made it bit clearer. I realize that may be asking too much and you are concentrating on the basics right now. Your site is a work in progress and it will get bigger and better, but you have set up a very solid foundation. Have fun!

Somebody threw away promos? [hands on head, searching the ceiling for justice in the universe] Thanks, though, for making a few a little rarer. Your comments are valuable coming from an uninterested bystander. Those can be the most valuable.

The problem with this is the spelling, some are under non-sport update (singular) while others are under non-sports update (plural) and some are under NSU. Unfortunately, every online listing I've seen has this problem. The only solution is to allow wildcard and boolean searches in the search engine.

Who cares wether singular or plurals are mixed up . It is a GREAT effort and shows what most cards look like wich in my opinion will make most collectors who have just seen the card name and # in print make their mind up about purchasing a card. Even though my main interest is Inkworks promos i also collect other card makers promos in general especially Breygent wich like Inkworks are defunct and have some beautiful promo cards. This should send a surge of promo card buying throught the hobby I have listed a few cards that I will be looking for on the bay in the future. This is what promo callectors have been waiting for I also did not realise that there were so many issuers THANKS TODD for the effort put into this

I put "desert" into the Search Cards field, thinking Desert Storm cards would show up. I hit the green Search button and got "No sets matched your search." Am I doing something wrong?

I think the site is being updated. None of the search queries are working. ____________________

Earlier in the day on Blowout pcetodd responded that the search was down for an unknown reason and it was being looked into. Guess it's still not working. It's a big undertaking to run your own website and you are always going to need support help, especially once a good amount of traffic comes in. You don't know what errors will show up until people start using it, by that is just the shakedown process.
