Some of my holy grails:

Donruss Americana promos of Dick Vitale, Wayne Newton, and Humphrey Bogart (supposedly the Bogart ones were only given to his family, and only a few of the Newtons were "accidentally" released at an NSCC show).

Nightmare on Elm Street 1991 sample cards by Impel (I have just one, but there are 6 or 7)

Blue Angels (1991) promo # 17 (I have #1-16 and 18-20)

Mickey Mouse 'n Friends (SkyBox, 1996) set of 3 oversized promo cards; I have only seen pictures of these in PCE

Any U.S. Stamp promo cards (Tower, 1994) There are about 8 different ones, #ed USS1, USS2, etc

Creators Master Series P0 and Ultraverse Master Series H1 (both SkyBox, 1995); I have never seen either. Supposedly they are very rare

That reminds me, my current holy grail is the Cosmic Teams P1 (Apparition). It's been on my list for over 10 years and never seen it.

I've seen that (the Die Another Day set) and have wondered if it was originally for sale or given away. I was told it was first available at one of the National Sports Card Collectors shows.

But i wouldn't mind another one if it was numbered 007/500 or 006/500. That would be SOOOOOO cool!
My other favourite promo(s) is the Die Another Day 6-card promo packet made available at a NJ convention (I think), that are foil versions of the Japanese movie posters.

The only other promos I'm searching for are the James Bond Connoisseur Collection San Diego 4 card set and the X-Files Connections P-FOA card (but at a more reasonable price).

Out of curiosity, do people consider preview sets 'Promo Cards' or would you regard them separately?

Yeah, I haven't seen that one available in at least 10 years. Those Cornerstone Avengers first series promos are definitely harder to find than the ones for the second series. I have only a few of the first series promos myself.

I am still looking for these. Some of them for over 20 years with no luck....

Donruss Americana promos of Wayne Newton, and Humphrey Bogart (supposedly the Bogart ones were only given to his family, and only a few of the Newtons were "accidentally" released at an NSCC show).

Blue Angels (1991) promo # 17 (I have #1-16 and 18-20)

Mickey Mouse 'n Friends (SkyBox, 1996) set of 3 oversized promo cards; I have only seen pictures of these in PCE

Any U.S. Stamp promo cards (Tower, 1994) aside from USS1 and 2 which I have; there are supposedly about 8 different ones, up to USS8

Marvel Universe IV (SkyBox, 1993) Punisher 2099 sample foil and the 3 card foil sheet from the convention with Doom 2099 and the other villains on it

Earth Tribe comic cards from the 2000 San Diego Comic Con; I am missing 1 of the film cards in the set

I still need the P2 promo from Bond 50th Anniversary Series 1 featuring Daniela Bianchi on the bed in From Russia With Love. An exclusive via Rittenhouse’a Facebook page I believe that I totally missed!

Still looking for one 6 years later!!!

I was talking about holy grails with another collector a few months ago. I don't really have one. There are cards I've been looking for but don't really have one in mind that would really make my year. A couple of years ago, I was looking for the Endangered Wild Animals (Victoria Gallery) promo but found it. There is a card I haven't seen in at least 10 years - long enough that I wonder if it was just in a dream. It's a Cardlynx promo for two sets (Parrots and Owls) and it shows a card from both sets on the front (don't recall the back).

As for a set I'd like to finish, that might be the Fish-o-saurs sticker set. It's another of those parody sets from the 90's but I like the artwork. It seems like a set that's easy to find a few cards of at first but getting the last few might take years.

Card collectors like to throw around that term Holy Grail. But what does it really mean? I think the definition has to vary depending on the collector.

Some seem to think the card has to be so rare its impossible to find. Or that it has to be so expensive, it's just unaffordable to the collector. Or that it is just so unique that it can't ever be duplicated. Or is so obscure that only a handful experts ever heard of it. Wink

I can think of many autograph cards and sketches that would fall under one or more those descriptions and almost none of them would be a Holy Grail to me. There are cards you would like to own, but few that you really need to own. As you say, ones that would make your year. Sometimes its just a matter of figuring out what you really want and looking for it. Can't see the forest for the trees kind of thing. But Holy Grails should be personal and be about more than just picking out the most expensive cards on the hot list.

Yeah, to me a "Holy Grail" needs to have that component of elusiveness. You can't find it even if you were willing and able to overpay for it. You might have had a shot at one 10-15 years ago but you got outbid or you found out about the auction just days after it was over.

Of course, if a card is not that hard to find but always priced $300 more than you can afford to pay, then it's just as out of reach and more frustratingly so. Then again, is it truly a Holy Grail if you're only a moderate casino jackpot or lottery ticket win away from it?
