Both Kraven and LOTR bombed big time this weekend. They opened with 11 M and 5 M only. Pretty abysmal.

So far 20 films (4 less than last year) have crossed the $100M mark in 2023 but there are still 3 potentials.
If Red One hangs out until the end of the month it should cross the line.
Both Sonic and Mufasa could race quickly to the mark while adding more bucks in 2025.
It will be another $8B+ year domestic while falling a bit short from 2023.
Still, you have to account that none of the 2024 $100M films were additional box office bucks from the previous year. In 2023 Avatar and Puss n Boots added over $400M to the yearly total in spite of being released in Dec of 2022.
We are still making roughly 300 films less per year since before covid.

Last year, only 8 films grossed 200 M or more domestically. This year there have been 8 already and you may have 2 more.
Inside Out 2 at almost 653 M will be the highest grossing film of the year. In 2023, Barbie made 636 M.

Not to dwell upon the negative, but I think it's safe to say that we know what the misses of 2024 were.
Joker 2, Madame Web, Kraven, LOTR, Transformers, Furiosa, and Harold and the Purple Crayon all crashed and burned.
Furthermore, Ghostbusters, Alien: Romulus and The Fall Guy only did modest business.
Disney had a great year, with 3 of the Top 5 highest grossing films. Universal and Warner Bros. also did well. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Tommy C,

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 debuted with 62 M domestically while the new Lion King film, Mufasa, made only 35 M which was reportedly unexpected.

I think it's safe to say that this is FINAL Top 5 list of the year, as neither Sonic 3 nor Mufasa will make 350 M plus domestically:
1) INSIDE OUT 2 2) DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE 3) WICKED 4) MOANA 2 5) DESPICABLE ME 4

After almost 2 weeks of release, Kraven the Hunter hasn't even grossed 20 M at the U.S. box office.
Lord of the Rings hasn't been able to make it to 10 M.
Wow.

Wow.
At least The War of the Rohirrim was made on a smaller budget. I watched it today and thought it was good but missed hard on the connection to the other film and episode series. With everything Amazon is putting into The Rings of Power it seems like this effort should have blended in a bit better. Kraven is screwed!

I heard that the guy who plays Kraven is being touted as the potential next James Bond.
Given the total failure of the film, I wonder if this hurts his chances.

Wow, that Kraven movie seems to have crashed and burned. I bet it cost a lot more than 20M to make.

So this is the FINAL Top 10 list of domestic films for 2024. You can see what films were hits.
1) INSIDE OUT 2 2) DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE 3) WICKED 4) MOANA 2 5) DESPICABLE ME 4 6) BEETLEJUICE 7) DUNE 2 8) TWISTERS 9) GODZILLA vs. KONG 10) KUNG FU PANDA 4
SONIC 3 and MUFASA are currently # 18 and 19. Not sure if they will break into the Top 10.
Notably, GHOSTBUSTERS only made it to # 20. ALIEN didn't make the Top 20, nor did JOKER 2, TRANSFORMERS, GARFIELD or FURIOSA.

Once again, every movie in the top ten is based on pre-existing IP (either a sequel, remake, or part of a franchise).
You've got to go all the way to 21st place ("IF") to get to a movie that is based on an original story.

It's kind of a sad fact of the movie world. It's probably a combination of running out of original ideas(or ones that a studio will take a risk on) and going where they know there's guaranteed money and merchandise tie-ins etc.
But, for me personally, I haven't enjoyed that many movies lately and I have to wait till I can see them online/DVD as I can't get to a cinema anymore. I've watched much more series/mini series on TV and streaming and found some of those much more entertaining and absorbing than the latest movies. I also have superhero fatigue and can't face watching yet another marvel type movie. Although, as sick as I am of animated movies too(except the stop-motion perfection of Wallace & Gromit ) I really loved "Flow". I've watched it by slightly nefarious means online. I think it gets a full release this year and it's beautiful.

Sonic 3 should be the # 9 film of 2024 by this week and Mufasa is at # 12. Word is that they are beginning work on Sonic 4.

Sonic 3 has passed 200 M domestically and Mufasa has hit 190 M which means that they will end up being the # 9 and 10 films of 2024 in terms of box office returns.
