LOS ANGELES, June 4 (UPI) -- NBC has cast Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen as the titular psychiatrist-serial killer in its upcoming drama series "Hannibal Lecter," The Hollywood Reporter said.

The 13-episode series is based on Thomas Harris' novels, which have spawned the hit movies "The Silence of the Lambs," "Red Dragon," "Hannibal" and "Hannibal Rising."

Hugh Dancy is to play Will Graham, an FBI profiler and Lecter's nemesis, in the small-screen version of the story.

Mikkelsen's film credits include "The Hunt," "Casino Royale" and "The Three Musketeers."

I don't know how popular this well be.

The novels have been throughly covered already.

Hannibal, unlike Dexter, is a serial killer that you can't support as an anti-hero.

There have been a couple of real life murders in the past weeks that have been worst than Hannibal the Cannibal.

Just doesn't sound like escapist entertainment.

It's especially hard because it is on NBC so it won't be able to go as far as Showtime, which makes me wonder how you can do a cerebral thriller about a serial killer during primetime television on a major network. Just thinking about how you would advertise this gives me a headache!
