Hits and Misses of 2025
I guess it's fair to say that these summer movies all flopped:

ELIO
SMURFS
BALLERINA
M3GAN 2.0
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

KARATE KID: LEGENDS made over 100 M worldwide on a 45 M budget, so it wasn't a total disaster. But it didn't exactly light up the box office

Did something I have not done in years and went to opening night of Fantastic Four First Steps IMAX 3D.

I thought it was great and much more enjoyable than Superman. Right now it is on track to equal first weekend domestic box office, but I think international appeal will go to MARVEL.

Jurassic Park is killing it at $718M as the superhero films battle it out. Both of which should hit Hit status. F1 would have been fine if someone didn't make the decision to spend between $200-$300M for a racing movie.

Fantastic Four grossed 118 M this weekend which is very good, but slightly less than what Superman made. Superman is now the #4 film of the year, having passed Sinners. It is slightly behind Jurassic World.

My prediction is FF will significantly pass Superman world wide.

Superman crossed the 300 M mark domestically. It is less than 10 M behind Jurassic World. These films are currently # 3 and 4 for 2025.

In its second week, Fantastic Four is likely to make another 75 M and will probably move into the 7th position of the year, passing Mission Impossible and Captain America.

Fantastic Four had a steep drop in its 2nd week, making only about 40 M. Within a day or two it will pass 200 M domestically and will knock Captain America out of its spot, becoming # 7 for the year in terms of the highest grossing films.

This week the Top 5 of the year will soon be:

1) MINECRAFT
2) LILO & STITCH
3) SUPERMAN
4) JURASSIC WORLD
5) SINNERS

LILO is still 2 M plus behind MINECRAFT

So far this is the first year since 2020 that no film has hit 500 M in U.S.

Saw an article in which the powers that be at Disney are discussing why FANTASTIC FOUR has not been a bigger hit (it's made 208 M domestically so far)

Looking at the numbers, Marvel hasn't had a movie which made 300 M since 2022, aside from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Of the 37 Marvel films released since 2008, Fantastic Four is currently #27 in terms of the domestic box office.

Yup! Very surprised FF First Steps slowed down so much after the first week. Still not sure of the wisdom that releases these films so close to each other.

Yes, FF has only grossed 231 M domestically while Superman is up to 331 M.

With Avatar 3 and Wicked 2 coming this fall, FF may be knocked off the Top 10 list for the year.

People are also saying that neither of the 2 superhero films have done well overseas. Superman has made about 250 M internationally and FF a little over 200 M. Maybe in Europe they are just not familiar with the FF characters ? Perhaps a lack of interest ?

In terms of the Marvel MCU films, FF is about to pass the first "Doctor Strange" movie which will make it rank # 23 of the 37 films, for domestic gross.

But it won't go higher than # 23. It would need to make another 30 M to pass Captain America 2, which it won't do.

It's interesting the FF marketing stopped dead the weekend it released. I still see promos for Superman.

With the summer almost over, I guess we can say which action/sci-fi/cartoon films were hits and which ones were misses:

BIG HITS

LILO & STITCH
JURASSIC WORLD
SUPERMAN
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

MODERATE HITS

F1
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8
FANTASTIC FOUR

MISSES

KARATE KID
ELIO
SMURFS
BALLERINA
BAD GUYS 2
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER
M3GAN 2.0

Mission Impossible cost hundreds of millions to make and yet it couldn't reach 200 M. Time to end the franchise

ALOT of misses this summer !

I only saw Superman and Fantastic Four at the cinema, but I'll see at least a few of the others streaming.

These last few months, besides those, we saw Naked Gun, The Life Of Chuck, 28 Years Later, and Final Destination, and all were winners. The only movie left in August that might get me to buy an actual ticket is Toxic Avenger.

I wouldn't call this one a miss. $63m on a, $18m budget is really good, good enough they're already talking about doing more.

Weapons is most certainly a hit. World wide box office $148.7M on a $38M budget. It hasn't even been released on pay streaming services yet.

I Know What You Did Last Summer has only grossed about 32 M domestically

The original from 1997 made 72 M in the U.S. and even the second film from 1998 made 40 M.

Saw "Weapons" on Tuesday.
It was excellent.
