Tommy CHits and Misses of 2025
Minecraft is up to a very impressive 281 M domestically in just 2 weeks already and is still chugging along. No one saw this coming.
Captain America is up to 199 M and change after 2 months and probably will hit the 200 M mark before it closes.
Down the list is Snow White at only 81 M.

Tommy CMinecraft is up to 345 M domestically
Captain America crossed the 200 M mark but it is still on the very low end of the Marvel movies. Only 7 films in the franchise made less.

Tommy CSo which of these upcoming summer films do you think will be big hits ?
Superman
Fantastic Four
Mission Impossible 8 (# 7 wasn't a huge success)
Jurassic World 4 (the seventh Jurassic film)
Lilo & Stitch (Disney)
How to Train Your Dragon (live)
Karate Kid: Legends
Smurfs
Elio (Pixar)

chesspiecefaceI saw the new Looney Tunes movie last month at the theater and there were trailers for all of those kids movies: Lilo & Stitch (live), How to Train Your Dragon (live), Karate Kid: Legends, Smurfs, and Elio.
There weren't a lot of children (or other people) there, but the kids cheered the loudest for Lilo & Stitch. I won't be attending any of those, but might watch some of them on streaming. The Smurfs looked to be Smurfette-led and voiced by Rihanna. They got a pretty good young actor for "How To Train Your Dragon".
From the rest of the list, I'll see the "Mission Impossible" streaming and the Jurassic Park probably not at all, but I'll definitely go to the movies for "Superman", "Fantastic Four", "Thunderbolts", and the new Paul Thomas Anderson and Ari Aster films (and maybe "The Phoenician Scheme" from Wes Anderson).

David RLast year we had 22 films which made more than 100 M domestically. Several of which were released in the spring of 2024.
So far this year we have had 2.

Tommy CI wonder if Fantastic Four's box office will be hurt by one of the actors getting involved with "politics", similar to what happened with the backlash against Snow White. I saw the article today that Pedro Pascal is fighting with J.K. Rowling and demanding that the upcoming Harry Potter TV show be boycotted.

Tbey were already mad at the Silver Surfer being a female version of the character for this movie. They'll review bomb it, like usual, but if the movie is any good, it'll still break through.

Tommy C"Sinners" is expected to cross the 100 M mark domestically this weekend, only the 3rd film of the year to do so.
"Dog Man" only made it to 98 M back in Jan/Feb.

Tommy CSinners is up to an unexpected 122 M domestically and it's still going strong
Minecraft up to 380 M. Should reach 400 M in the U.S. soon.

Tommy CThe new Marvel film "Thunderbolts" has opened and it was expected to do big business.
However, early reports are that it is on track to gross slightly less than this year's Captain America, which opened well, but dropped off rapidly and limped to the finish line within a few short weeks.

David RThunderbolts made about 76 M domestically this weekend, less than Captain America. Yet folks are saying it was a hit.
The Nicolas Cage film "The Surfer" and Alec Baldwin's "Rust" both BOMBED. The latter made about 25 K !

Tommy C"Sinners" will likely pass Captain America to become the # 2 film of the year in another week or two. It is already up to almost 180 M domestically.
May 07, 2025, 11:57 AM
Tommy CWithin another day or so, Thunderbolts will have made more domestically in 1 week than Snow White grossed in its entire 7 week run.
I've heard that the latter will be streaming on Disney Plus next week.

And being a train wreck kinda person...I want to see it. The fact that it was a "western" made on a small budget (as they should be) it makes me want to check it out.
