While he's old, it's probably better than having a younger actor replace him, as they're doing with the upcoming Han Solo movie Who can picture anyone but Ford as Indiana Jones or Han Solo ? I can't

I thought it might be the same thing, just different countries. AARP is the American Association of Retired Persons here. The thing is, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a pretty terrible mess, so I don't know on what basis anyone thinks it would be good to do it again. Except that the name recognition alone guarantees that a certain number of people will go to see these movies regardless of how lousy they become. And that is why these days we are littered with lousy sequels and prequels and reboots and spin offs that are still profitable for studios to make.

Well, it's all uphill after surviving a nuclear blast in a refrigerator as in "KotCS". "Last Crusade" was also dreadful. A 1985 (or so) comedy by Robert Townsend called "Hollywood Shuffle" had a film-within-a-film parody of Indiana Jones that eventually, essentially, came true. In it, the Indy-esque rogue hero, trapped at the edge of a cliff with the damsel in distress, looks her in the eyes, and says "trust me" as they jump, to what should be certain death...only to land on their feet, unharmed, thus making their escape. The two young (uncensored) movie critics within the film viewing the clip respond accordingly... ____________________ Everywhere around this burg they're running out of verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. The key difference here is the absence of needing George Lucas' approval this time round. From what I've heard, people involved were more than happy with an early script for the last one that Lucas went and rejected, and we got that pieced together alien mess afterwards. I generally trust Disney with their major franchises of late so I'll probably see it when it comes out. I think it could work well if it's a similar enough vein to the Hobbit, where we see Harrison Ford every now and again ala Ian Holm recounting an old adventure, and have a younger actor taking the reins of Indy rather than some Shia LaBeouf passing of the torch thing. We could have some fun action sequence with Ford at the start which results in him getting captured (as per...) and forced to recount an old story that relates to the villains of the present day, and have Harrison Ford involved again in the third act. Indy works well in the time period he's in, away from the Lara Croft levels of technology that might come around in his old age, so it makes sense that they'd maybe want prequels as they go forward with the franchise. This message has been edited. I, also thought that the last one was terrible. I won't even add the DVD to my collection ! The plot was so confusing, with all the twists and turns, and the alien stuff was total nonsense I liked the first 3 films alot What was the earlier script that Lucas rejected about ?

Yeah I get that, but it's because the film makers want it both ways. They want to make fresh movies, but at the same time they want to use old characters or old franchise names to lock the audience into feeling that you have seen the last 4 films, so you must see 5 and 6 and 7 and however more they can string together. Then when we, as the audience objectively look at it, we realize that only the first two movies were any good and all the rest have been varying degrees of garbage. The joke's on us. Take Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which I personally thought was an awful load of ****. From the very start he wanted to do a trilogy, don't they all, but he kept saying this was not an Alien prequel. Then he said it was in the Alien universe, but separate story and separate characters. So Prometheus makes money naturally, but most people who saw it think it's a load of ****. Nevertheless they still make Prometheus 2, to come out late summer this year. But the title has now been changed. It is no longer Prometheus 2, it is called Alien Covenant. I guess Scott thinks that a tie-in title is a good thing now and Alien fans will flock to see it. I am an Alien fan and that got me to waste my time with Prometheus. I am not coming back for more of that dreak no matter what he calls it. People have got to stop going to bad movies because of good franchise names. And by the way, the Prometheus series and Scott's first rights are what is holding up the making of an actual new Alien movie, which has been put on hold for the foreseeable future.

I see your point with Alien, and I can think of Die Hard... and Terminator.... and Predator and understand how people can get feel betrayed by a once promising franchise. But on the other hand- Star Wars, Fast and the Furious, X-Men, Batman, Rocky, Jurassic Park - these are all franchises that flailed after a few entries BUT then got stronger again afterwards as kinks have been worked out, audience reactions gauged, and new creatives attached. Plus their recent entries are some of the highest grossing films around. Let's not forget the James Bond franchise has been a bit uneven either, but then after something like Die Another Day, you shake things up, and get Casino Royale. There is yet hope!
From what I've read I'm not quite sure if there were major plot or story differences as it seems to be crystal (human) skulls and lead lined fridges, but I think it was meant to be a lot subtler and ambiguous regarding gods more than aliens, and the teenage child element was tacked on from a different story idea, etc. There're various articles about it online that are an interesting read, like this one: http://filmschoolrejects.com/f...city-of-the-gods.phpThis message has been edited. The original Indy trilogy is just superb which is why Crystal Skull hurts so bad. Some people rag on Last Crusade which I don't get I think it is just as good as the other two. Probably my fave of the bunch. I went into Crystal Skull looking forward to an older Indy, and sat there in the cinema dumbfounded. I could not believe what was unfolding before my eyes. How could they get it so right and then get it so wrong? Indiana Jones was never sci-fi! After seeing all that was wrong with the Star Wars prequels, Crystal Skull, what with its CG monkey-swinging LaBouf, double-taking gopher, and plastic looking feel had Lucas's madness stamped all over it. Even the usually dependable Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, and John Hurt were all abysmal. How Spielberg and Ford could sign off on this I do not know. At least LaBeouf had the good grace to come out and publicly call it **** despite Ford telling him off you should support your movie no matter what. (Me thinks all involved knew this wasn't really their A-game). I will watch Indy 5 if it ever happens, but not with the anticipation a huge Indiana Jones fan like me should have. An older Indy could work but Crystal Skull has made me lose A LOT of goodwill towards any future adventures.

It has just been announced that the screenwriter for Indy 5 is none other than David Koepp, the screenwriter for Indy 4 Crystal Skull. I even have his autograph card from the set. Now I'm not saying that mess of a movie was all his fault, I'm sure the director and producers had a lot to do with it. However, besides all the stupid plot stuff, I can't think of one scene or one line of dialogue where I said, "good writing fella". So can they not find another screenwriter in all of Hollywood to pen the new one, if for no other reason than to make the fans feel that the studio knows how bad the last film was and they will do better this time?

Wow! I think you are the first person I have ever heard that from. Most people I come across think it is probably the best one. Guess that's why we are all different. I put up with Crystal Skull for what it was. I think after so many years away mixed with three Hollywood icons, I just expected something very campy, over the top and overly polished. That's what we got. I hope the next one comes back with a little more grit and heart. I wonder if Indy will still be married to Marion in this one? I still think out of all of them, Temple of Doom annoys me the most. Watching Mrs. Spielberg and Short Round in the same scene was like spikes raking on a chalkboard for me. ____________________ Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's valuable.

I found the plot of the 4th film incomprehensible, unlike the first 3 films Indy goes to South America, finds a crazy old colleague, Oxley, babbling nonsense about skulls, and then something about the Russians trying to find same, and to bring the missing skull to a particular location, where an alien spacecraft emerges and flies away. Huh ?

Diamond Card Talk Member |
That's a good summary, you understood it, it was just junk. The Russians wanted the alien psychic power, which was too much for them and they all got sucked into some other dimension. The space ship flew back home when all "heads" were on board. Easily the worst one, nothing to recommend it. I pick 1, 3, 2 and 4 in that order.

I'll have to give "Last Crusade" another chance. I did see it only once, and that was a long time ago. For Indy 5, I just hope it doesn't end with Indy being killed at the end by a grown up Short Round, now twisted and evil. ____________________ Everywhere around this burg they're running out of verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Hahahaha! Don't give em any ideas! Yeah, I agree with the weak story line for Chrystal Skull. I felt that they were trying to capture the ideology for a mix of 50s style conspiracy theories but ultimately failed. ____________________ Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's valuable.

So I just saw the rerun of one of the best Big Bang episodes last night and I again LMAO. This is how Amy ruined Sheldon's favorite movie Raiders of the Lost Arc and maybe the whole franchise for him. So if you are going to miss that don't read farther. She watched it for the first time and said she liked it, despite the major plot hole. Sheldon said there was no such thing, it was a perfect movie and dared her to prove otherwise. Amy told him that Indiana Jones was irrelevant to the story. With or without his character, the Nazis find the Arc, open it and die. Sheldon agreed and had his perfect movie ruined. And that is why Big Bang used to be the smartest series on TV, not so much lately, but it was very good before the scripts got a bit a stale. I still watch though.
