I read that Gil Gerard passed away on December 16 at the age of 82. If you were a kid in the 70's, he was and will always be Buck Rogers.

I just read that British singer/songwriter/slide guitarist, Chris Rea, passed away earlier today at the age of 74. He had a big hit in '78, "Fool (If You Think It's Over"). I remember that song well - used to be on the local easy rock station (KEZR) before it changed its format to crappy pop of the 90's.

He was also well known here in the UK for two driving songs: 'Driving Home for Christmas' and 'Road to Hell'. The latter was about the frustration of being stuck in rush-hour traffic on the motorway. It struck chords with just about everyone who drives a car.

Speaking of local celebrities, the San Francisco Bay Area lost a legend, Doug McConnell, on Jan 13 at the age of 80 (complications from a stroke). He's known nationally for his TV show, "Mac and Muttley," which was originally on Channel 5 (KPIX) in the Bay Area but went into syndication on the Discovery Channel. He was on Channel 4 (KRON) from 1993 to 2008 with his popular show, "Bay Area Backroads," in which he visited interesting people in out-of-the-way places in my region. He hosted, "Pacific Currents," which was more environmentalism-oriented. He also reported for CBS News on environmental issues for a time.

Those were good shows. Thanks, Doug.

Catherine O'Hara, known for the HOME ALONE and BEETLEJUICE films, has died at age 71.

She was in many other 1990s films like WYATT EARP, DICK TRACY, and BETSY'S WEDDING.

I must pay tribute to one of my all time favorite actors, Catherine O'Hara. I was shocked to hear that she died today. No cause of death has been reported as yet, but she was just at a party for the Emmys.

Catherine O'Hara was the best part of any project she was in. Occasionally she was the star, but she was more often a supporting player or part of a big ensemble. I don't think I ever saw a sub-par performance from her in anything.

Her list of work is very long, but she was more than Home Alone or Beetlejuice or even Schittscreek. I can remember her back to SCTV skits. She had the respect of her fellow actors, but was never the popular A-Lister she should have been. Maybe that's because of the somewhat niche work she chose to do, I don't know. I do know that this is a big unexpected lose to us as fans and my condolences to her friends and family.

Well said, Raven. This one really hurts.
I'll post a couple of cards of her in the other thread shortly. Frown

Demond Wilson of the 1970s sit-com "Sanford and Son" fame has passed at 79. He played the son.

He said in an interview that he was bitter that Redd Foxx quit the show in 1977, leading to the successful show's cancellation.

Legendary guitarist, songwriter, and a founding member of Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Steve Cropper passed away on December 4. He co-wrote "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay" with Otis Redding. He played on the original version of "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave in 1967 and as well as the live and recorded versions by The Blues Brothers in 1978. In those versions, Cropper is called out by name, "Play it, Steve!"

Actor Bud Cort passed away February 11 at the age of 77. He had a small part in Robert Altman's 1970 movie, "M*A*S*H," and then starred in Altman's "Brewster McCloud" released the same year but he is best remembered for his starring role in "Harold and Maude" directed by Hal Ashby. It's been so long since I've seen "Harold and Maude" - saw it in the late 70's or early 80's. You might say it's another one of those 70's movies with a sad ending but you should check it out.
