Very insightful, wonderful stuff! I watched the Richard Parks and Michael Mastermaker episodes on youtube. It's nice to hear and see the real artists (& publisher) behind the names. Now I need to watch the other two episodes.

So glad you enjoyed it! (I wasn't aware someone had replied) Episode 6 with Elaine Perna is now available, and there will be a "special episode" on Wednesday this week. ____________________ @PiPPodcast (YouTube) www.ingridkvhardy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IngridKVHardy

Just caught your Episode 6 with Elaine and Lindsey and it was like being a fly on the wall listening to a private conversation among sketch artists. I really enjoyed it and would have hit "like", were it not for the fact that I don't sign in. I'll have to try to make the time to see the others. I think you covered a lot of stuff and I'm always interested in the business side of making card sets because as a card collector, it's often the background information that we may not hear about that makes us leave comments on certain products. Sometimes we can make assumptions about a product simply because we never know the real reasons why something was made in a certain way. The only area I would have liked to hear about that wasn't touched much was artist compensation and how that plays into obtaining artists for card makers like Perna Studios and others. Perhaps that subject was avoided by design, but I have often wondered how artists feel when they see the high prices for their sketch cards on eBay and how that effects their agreements for future contract work? Thanks for putting out the videos too, always better than podcasts for me, as it makes it more personal when you see the speakers.

Thank you for the encouraging words, Raven! Talking about artists' compensation is a topic we can certainly talk about in a future episode. There may be issues on that topic but it's something we can maybe find a few people to talk with about. Thanks for the suggestion! As of now, the episode with Chris Mixer has come out, talking about the great blank sketch card debate and other things. And the episode with Angel S. Aviles. There is just one episode that will be audio only, as the guest did not want to be on video. That episode goes into the business aspect of buying and selling cards a bit more. There are 9 more recorded episodes thus far (a total of 17, since Chris Mixer's is labelled 6.5 since it was a Wednesday special release), and guests include fellow podcaster Greg McLaughlin, Alexandra Weber from Titan Cards, Richard Fowlks, Floydman Sumner, and more. If you questions you'd like us to ask, please do! ____________________ @PiPPodcast (YouTube) www.ingridkvhardy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IngridKVHardy

Episode 8 will feature Floydman Sumner! Possessing quite the sense of humor, Floydman will talk about his work, his card sets, his tools, all while wielding his trusty sense of humor. :-) ____________________ @PiPPodcast (YouTube) www.ingridkvhardy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IngridKVHardy

Today it is all Floydman Sumner - his art, his passion, his humor. We talk art tools, procrastination, and conventions... A super nice person! Youtube: https://youtu.be/wh92rqRZm2I Spotify/Applepodcasts: https://anchor.fm/ikv-hardy There might be two more mid-week specials coming up: One with Karen Watt Cowan where we talk about ordering sketch cards, and one with Harris Toser where we chat about the Philly Non Sport con that is coming up. ____________________ @PiPPodcast (YouTube) www.ingridkvhardy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IngridKVHardy

Hi Ingrid, Just caught the new episode with Harris Toser. I hope a few Card Talk readers take the time to view it as we even get a bit of a mention. Yes, there are quite a few places to go to discuss trading cards now, but if you read NSU I still think this is best. There is also a lot of card collecting history and tons of opinions, if you have a mind to look back on these threads. Couple of points I jotted down, just my ideas, others may have had different experiences. Why do people like promo cards? Best answer, they were designed to be FREE. That's the pure version of it. Of course they have become their own market and many are manufactured just for the big money now and many are even promos in name only. You could write a whole book on it and people have, but the original lure is still of the free card that is desired. I was very surprised to hear that you, Lindsey and Harris find so many people, presumably at card shows, so unaware of sketch cards, especially in the UK and Canada. The general public I can understand, but how do card collectors of any stripe not know about sketch cards in 2022? I do not believe the first sketch cards appeared in a sports card product. I'm no expert on them, my early ones were bought around 1998 with Marvel Silver Age I think, but I'm sure there were some coming out of comic related sets in the early 1990's. Others would know better to narrow it down, but I'm sure the artists were promoting their own work in those sets. Sketches in sports cards came later, or else I'm not aware of them. When talking about the current big card makers, I also was surprised that TOPPS was brought up without mentioning Fanatics, who took over. Perhaps that falls under the "in transition" comment. Card Talk readers should be interested in the comments about the NSU price guide and its vintage card coverage. Also that it will stay in print. Good to hear about the Philly Non-Sport Convention coming up and its history. Another thing I liked about the conversation between the three of you is your display of the "collector mentality" in all things. Yes, people who are collectors really do want things in their hand and in their homes. Most collectors have more than one collection and hobby, often juggling three or more interests at once. It really is a state of mind and people who don't have it will never get it. I'm going to sign off now because I tend to get too wordy, but I hope you get some more comments in this thread. Your podcasts are quite informative and yeah, it's good stuff. Best to you and Lindsey for doing them. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Raven,

Thank YOU Harris, for talking to us! Hopefully we can do it again! Hi Raven, first, thank you so much for listening and/or watching the podcast! You have no idea how nice it is to get feedback and know that people get something out of it. I've told Lindsey about your feedback too and she is also thankful! Perhaps you would like to be interviewed in the future, and share your thoughts on the beginnings of sketch cards? While working on the Sketch Card books, the first two have articles about POSSIBLE beginnings of sketch cards. While playing with those, it became quite clear that so far it doesn't seem like there is any solid date of when they began. Although that could of course change... Would be nifty if some new info came to light! We didn't mention the Fanatics issue not because we didn't want to, but because Harris was on a limited time frame for the interview, and time really flies when you're having fun... EDIT: I'd written a huge long post about the goals of the podcast after this point, and for whatever reason it was deleted whe I pushed the post now button. Suffice it to say that please do stay tuned for interviews with artists about their work, tools, and habits; technology and art; the creative life; mental health for creatives (although it is very tricky to find legit professionals who specialize and creatives AND have time for a podcast); publishers; and of course collectors. Without collectors there wouldn't be much of a hobby. We really hope that while we have fun doing the 'casts and videos (and sometimes they will just be simple interviews), people will find something useful from them. Your feedback is very much appreciated and encouraging, Raven! Thank you again. I hope you continue listening and watching! And if I may... I also hope people will support the last Sketch Card book on Kickstarter this summer, as the podcast was born around the idea of making it a loose "companion" to the books...❤️This message has been edited. Ingrid, you're very welcome, and I did watch the video version. I'm afraid I would make for a very poor speaker on the subject of sketch cards as my knowledge of them is more a by-product of my interest in certified autographed cards, but thanks for asking. Coming over from sports cards, I really wish I had paid more attention to non-sport cards in the 90s than I did. There should be a few people on Card Talk who know way more about the origin of sketch cards than I do, hopefully one of them may respond. Despite sketches not being the primary focus of my collection, I have amassed exactly 286 of them, approximately 90% made up of blind pulls from card boxes. I own 4 of yours, 3 pulled and 1 bought individually. An Alien out of fog from AvP Requiem, a Ringwraith from LotR II, a Chestburster from Alien 2017 and a Mary Elisabeth Mastrantonio from Grimm, that last one I bought. For a time in the early 2000's I contacted a couple of artists for commissions, most notably the late Chris Henderson. Those are my favorite sketches, as I prefer specific character portraits rather than random subjects, but I was satisfied once I had them and didn't need to go any farther. I know you are busy right now with Philly coming up and your scheduled work. If I may, I'll contact you on your website this summer and maybe you could take a request. My fault that I don't like to follow the usual buying platforms, but it would be a pleasure to talk with you and I hope other Card Talk readers will check out your podcasts/videos and take the opportunity to follow you and Lindsey in your work. Have a great time visiting in Philly. I think you are getting here in a good period for a show, and I hope you do well there.

Perhaps you'd like to talk a bit about the subject of certified autograph cards on the podcast... Neither Lindsey nor I know anything about that, so perhaps there are other who know little about autograph cards...? I'd love to do a piece for you! This summer would be perfect. The two best ways to contact me are either my email address: ingridhardy32@gmail.com or through messenger - Ingrid K. V. Hardy There is a Facebook group for the Podcast as well - both Lindsey and I will manage that. Not a ton of stuff happening, but the links to current episodes are all there as they go up (Patrons get early access), and as soon as I have time, all guests (artists, art directors, publishers, etc) who have been either in the books or on the podcast will be listed in the group with links to their sites. That's a big job so I'll likely wait until this current book project is over. Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pippodcast Can't wait for the Philly con next week - will have free promo cards for the book, the podcast, and Long Dog Publishing (my umbrella name, in honor of my two Dachshunds, one of whom is now deceased since a week) and 3 from RRParks Cards as well. I'll also have the last 5 copies of "The Art of Sketch Cards" vol 1, and copies of volume 2 for sale. I'd be happy to sign them if you wish! ____________________ @PiPPodcast (YouTube) www.ingridkvhardy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IngridKVHardy

In recent episodes, we have talked with Paul Bines (collector/Podcaster), Robert Kohlbus from Rittenhouse, Joanna Penn (Author, Entrepreneur), Derek Wichshmann (collector), Mark A. Spears (artist), and have presented a multi-artist time-lapse video featuring the theme of Marilyn Monroe. The latest epsisode was a Groupies 2 where Lindsey and I chat with several "small" publishers about the card sets they are releasing for the Halloween season. Elaine Perna was unable to be there due to illness but she'll be back on in a future episode! The next two episodes will feature Lak Lim (artist, comic book artist, and really nice person), and Rebecca Navagh from CatPrint - she will talk all about the things CatPrint can offer artists. She is also supposed to be offering a discount for listeners/watchers of the podcast. More to come! Wow, there is so much that you put out that I have to catch up on. As you know, I have been too busy to do much of anything, but I'm looking forward to watching more eventually. The books are outstanding, for anyone who has not seen them. Not what I expected at all. Not just pictures of pretty sketches, but so much information about the sketch card industry and even just art in general. Its more than just the hobby and really interesting for me, as I knew very little about it from a creative standpoint. Looking forward to the next and last one.
