Wonder why it's named that and the sketch cards have Avengers logo on them.
Rumour has it that it was going to be named for Avengers (and has an Avengers focus) but the Avengers movie is coming out at the same time and there is potential for confusion with the Upper Deck set.

Yes, when the cards first went out to the artists the set had Avengers in the title.
They either wanted to avoid confusion with the Upper Deck product or were asked to not use that title by Marvel. I could see either of those happening.

Since it went from being Avengers to a Marvel Universe type set, are the artists restrictions to Avengers no longer valid and are open to any character, for the most part, that they want to draw?

I think it is still an Avengers set, otherwise it would be a duplicate release of what we've just had - Marvel Universe. The title's changed, not the subject matter.

Colossus and Cyclops have never been an Avenger but both have either clashed with ( X-Men #9 )or fought beside them ( X-Men; Second Coming for example ).
Back Cat hasn't been an Avenger but had a solo mini series with Wolverine, had a relationship with Spidey, and had another mini-series with three female Avengers ( Hellcat, Photon, and Firestar)...she could show up on a card with any of them and be considered "valid"....
Storm just joined as of Avengers # 19
etc, etc, etc, etc.....
