I was just visiting my local card/comic shop, and they told me about a new James Bond Archives set that is coming out. It is apparently set for release later this year, and is called 2014 Archives. Supposed to have not one but THREE throwback sets, plus the various other inserts that we have come to know. I read the blurb in the latest Previews, but none of the information is being retained in my brain right now. Has anyone else heard about this?

The throwback sets are Thunderball, Live and Let Die and Tomorrow Never Dies. The main set is Casino Royale.

Saw this Rittenhouse Archives delves into the EON Productions vault for the new James Bond Archives 2014 Trading Cards! The 110-card base set retells the entire story of Casino Royale, scene by scene, with more than 200 different photo. Plus, there are bonus sets: a 110-card Casino Royale Gold parallel set, a 100-card Thunderball throwback set, a 120-card Live and Let Die throwback set, a 110-card Tomorrow Never Dies throwback set, and a 110-card Tomorrow Never Dies Gold parallel set. Collectors will find prop relic cards, as well as autographs by Pierce Brosnan, Sir Roger More, Teri Hatcher, and many more! Then, store your collector in the official binder which includes a bonus promo card. 6 cards per pack, 24 packs per box.

A couple weeks back on the RA message boards Steve mentioned that there would be base sets on all the above mentioned films, but no mention of how many cards in each or the parallels that would be available, nor the autographs either. Interesting that Thunderball is 100 cards and Live and Let Die 120 when all the other sets (and past ones) are all 110. At 660 base set cards RA are going to have to make one bloody big binder to hold them! I'll be very interested to see what images are used on the new Brosnan and Moore auto cards, and I'm glad to see they are branching out and producing nice big sets for fans of the series. We should have gotten a Casino Royale set back in 2006. We all know that it is the hits that pretty much carry releases these days so you could include a base set covering pretty much anything and it would still sell well. I've been championing full Bond sets for years - glad to see it actually happen.

with so many cards in the sets and so few packs in a box are you going to get a full set of anything in the box you buy? ____________________ Come, it is time for you to keep your appointment with The Wicker Man.

If they put 1 throwback card per pack (like they did before) it's going to take more than 12 boxes to complete the sets.

Haven't dealers and collectors been saying for years that they want base sets that are actually worth something? Seems manufacturers can't do right for doing wrong.

I complain about the manufacturers all the time but I still collect the cards, at least the Bond cards. I'm a completest, and I don't mind going after hard to get cards (ok, I mind a little), but the thing that irritates me the most now are the multiple parallel sets, which I consider totally unnecessary. I wish they would stop doing those. I'll never get all the 'gold' base cards from the JB AUTOS & RELICS set, for instance.

I just pick a favourite card image and get one parallel of that card. Cheap and simple. Pretty easy for me to do as parallel sets have never done it for me. But I understand how frustrating it can be for completests.

Dealers have always said that because they want the base sets to sell for more than $10. Collectors that buy multiple boxes/cases and sell off the doubles to offset the cost also want base sets to be worth more. But box buyers want a full base set in every box. It may be the only box they can get. As to this new Bond, Casino Royale, Thunderball, Live and Let Die and Tomorrow Never Dies all together. Why the rush to get them out? At this size, forget about boxes, it deserves to have a factory set release. They still do that with baseball cards, which are also over 600 cards. And the whole package set costs below the price of a single box.

So how big is this custom binder then? lol

The binder will need to be two or maybe three times the size of the normal binder. I like everything about it except the gold parallel sets. They are not for me but I guess some people must like them. ____________________ Come, it is time for you to keep your appointment with The Wicker Man.

I don't agree with you, I think most collectors want a collectable set. All Rittenhouse are doing is making the throwback insert sets rarer, to a degree which makes them uncollectable to most collectors.

These sets do seem to be made for the massive case breakers rather than the person who only wants, or can afford, one box. I wonder if the massive case breakers went away would the sets be made at all. ____________________ Come, it is time for you to keep your appointment with The Wicker Man.

That makes no sense. A 'collectable' is an item of worth/has value and is sought by collectors. A card of any rarity fits within that definition. I'd say these cards/throwback sets that people have to actually put effort into putting together are of far more value to most collectors (and dealers) than full sets or chase sets that won't shift at £2 (and must therefore be somewhat less collectable). Just because some chase cards that not ridiculously easy to obtain/overprinted doesn't make them "uncollectable". We're not talking about a Topps Harrison Ford auto limited to 8.
I really do not understand the relevance of what one single box will yield and disagree that it's all about the case buyers. I once bought a single case of Bond, and although I got lucky with my pulls I would never do it again. There is too much risk and potential for wasted money in a bad break. Whether you're the buyer who buys a 1 box or 1 case, 99% of the time that same amount of money can be put to better use just buying what you want instead. For the price of a single box of the last Bond set I got the promos P1, P3 (binder exclusive), P5, the full base set, the full Goldfinger throwback set (you'd need at least 5 boxes to get this set if collation was perfect), two autographs I really wanted (the same number guaranteed in a box) and the case topper card. If someone prefers to take the gamble, that is their choice but it never was, and never will be the best to spend the money if you'd rather receive maximum product. It's not so long ago I remember people moaning about chase cards structures/sets being too samey (think inkworks) or that base sets had no value and one full set should possibly be spread across several boxes. Now we have a company doing it and still people are unhappy. How much is one of these throwback sets going to cost? The Dr. No, Russia, and Goldfinger sets were all around £15 on release. Will these slightly rarer ones in this new set be maybe £30? I dunno. We'll see what the market will bear. Still, if that's the kind of money we're talking I'd rather pay £30 odd for a 99+ card chase set than the same money for 9 card puzzles, like we used to do back in the day! The gold parallels sets seem to be £500+ so, I will gladly concede they are far more challenging and not the most original idea for a chase set. Not being a big fan of parallels I satisfy myself with one of each of the golds. But how people can knock RA investing the time and money into releasing a proper set for every Bond movie I do not know. With 23 films that is quite a task! and will create a broader appeal for those who have been enjoying the films for the past 50+ years. Live And Let Die is actually my least favourite Bond film but I am very happy to see RA produce a full base/chase set for a movie released in 1973. For some Bond trading card fans this is a dream come true. When all is said and done, we're not getting countless rehash/compilation sets that again, was a regular complaint over the last few years. Thank you for the info AUST. Nice to see some new signers and rare ones from Dr. No. Some interesting sounding props, some Skyfall expansion cards (at last!), and even though I won't be getting them some cool sounding incentives. And what must be a MASSIVE binder!
