I do not, but I saw a guy using some electronic gauge that detected foil and anything above the average he was opening. that was back in the 90s in a sports card shop. He didn't seem to think there was an issue with doing that and still selling the rest of the unopened packs. I bet that guy (if he's alive) has some ripoff gimmick even now.

People can get very inventive when it comes to figuring out how to cheat. I never heard of x-raying for foil, but the scales bit I did see.

You had to buy open packs from a reliable card store where the owner didn't let customers search through the box and he didn't do it himself. Some manufacturers were lazy and always put the packs with hits in the same positions in the box, so pulling them out was easy. Thick or heavy hits were obvious, so they started putting in the blank cardboard placeholders to try to disguise it.

You had to expect loose packs to be corrupted. I only bought them if I was there when the box was opened and I was the one who could do the searching. Not really kidding, it's human nature, but at least I didn't bring instruments.
