December's Poll
Hello:

We've just posted the poll for December. This time, we're asking about a controversial September 11th related trading card series that is scheduled to be released soon. Do you feel there is a need for such a series? There is a story on CNN.com located here if you are interested in reading more about the series. Let us know.

To vote, click here or use the "Monthly Poll" link at the top of this page.

Once you've voted, come back here and discuss it.

I went to vote but couldn't, the new poll isn't up yet, but then, it's not December yet here, it's 11:16 pm in November.

Is this set necessary? No, but then, few card sets really are. Is this set offensive? Definitely not.

Over a year after the Sept 11 attack, we still know little about the people who died that day. This set will put a human face and name to some of the victims.

Each time someone puts out a set like this, such as Topps Enduring Freedom, USTC War Against Terrorism, Desert Storm, or Horrors of War, someone decides that it is not appropriate, without even seeing the cards.

I think it is the medium that disturbs people, trading cards, which many clueless persons feel are just for kids. If these photos and bios were published in a book, nobody would make a big thing about them.

Whoever is publishing these cards, go for it - I hope you do well, and I look forward to seeing some of these cards myself.

I compleatly agree with Don on this one,it's the medium they are against, and even if they do think the cards are going to be going to just children, what is wrong with this? Educating the children on a subject they should be, learning about what happened and people who died to save others.

Surely the decision on producing this set or not rests with the people who lost relatives. As i understand it nobody is represented on the cards unless permission has been given by their family.

So the decision to produce is nothing to do with us, however the decision to buy the product is and will be down to the individual the same as it is for any set.

I have about 30 prototypes from this set and i can,t find anything on them to offend anybody.

You should think carefully before voting no as censorship has no place in a free democracy, however being a free democracy gives you the right to say no if you want to.

Complicated isn,t it.

As long as the manufacturer has full permission from the families of the deceased, and as long as the set isn't tastelessly presented, then I see no reason why it shouldn't be released. I almost certainly won't see any cards from it myself - I suspect it might have more of a local (to the US) appeal than an international one, but it's is an interesting way of remembering those who died (through no fault of their own).

Heavy subject - I can honestly say though - I dont have a problem with it. I lost a very close friend in the WTC - a 28 year old woman who was recently married and had worked for Cantor for less than a year and I had known for nearly 15 years, plus I personally was acquainted with almost 50 of the other victims. My aunt was on the ferry that was pulling up as the second plane hit. I would love to see a card honoring them, it is the ulitmate tribute - to be immortalized on a card. Its just sad that this had to happen at all.

i am going to email this poll to the NO SPIN ZONE with BILL O'Rilly and with this card set add. on cnn.
You might be on the NO SPIN ZONE

Do you feel there is a need for such a set??
NO NO NO NO NO

I would not buy this set at all there is no need for such a set i seen the RAT promos.

In most states anyone can raise money for charity as long as they give them 10% of what they make after expencives and that is not much
Like pay roll, rent, office things ect. How much is realyleft after that

Like i do not give money any more to the red cross since Bill O'Rilly exposed them to us all about them keeping the money for office supplies, pay roll, and things that will happen in the future.
The money they raised was to go to the victims families of 9-11.
but how much did they realy get confused

THE ONLY ONES THAT WILL MAKE MONEY ON THIS SET ARE THE GREADY PEOPLE THAT THOUGHT IT UP THE , CARD DEALERS AND THE CARD COMPANYS THAT MAKES THE CARDS MOST LIKELY AS A TAX RITE OFF.
AND WHO WILL PAY FOR THE CARD COMPANY PART OF IT IN THE END US TAX PAYERS.

PS: I hope i do not get a promo of this set in your mag. or see a add for it.
I could see it in small print in the price guide section of your magazine .but not a add. for it or a free promo card of this RAT set.
(NEED I SAY MORE)

I've written and rewritten a response to this question and each time I get going in one direction, I hear myself arguing for another point of view. A tribute set is not, in itself, a bad idea. I just don't know enough, without seeing them, to make a judgement.
I found "PeopleCards" a rather interesting approach and somehow, I see a thread of "humanization" in the naming and telling of these poor souls. I don't know... It's a touchy subject, but if the card makers do indeed have permission from the families of those represented - who am I to cast stones.

Find out what you like in life... and collect it!

Do we need a set like this? From what I read of the CNN site, it seems as good of a set as any. Am I interested in this set. No, but someone might be. So, is the question - do we need a set like this or would we buy a set like this? There is not one set I can not think of that really needs to exist, but there are alot of sets that I am glad exist to entertain me that I bought or traded for.

I voted no....not everything *needs* to be a card set..I mean, I can see Life Magazine doing a book..that's sorta their thing, but a card set? Cards are to entertain, that's their purpose..memoralizing should be in a different venue and fashion, there is nothing entertaining in this subject matter.

I don't see why can't be used to educate.

I can just a see a set of Scientists and their Inventions - Baird, Bell, Marconi, Wright brothers, Lumiere brothers and (embarrassingly enough, people whose names escape me at the moment) those who invented the light bulb, the record player (gramophone), etc..

I have no objection to trading cards being used to educate children, I think it's a great idea as a method of teaching many things..the 50 states, the presidents, world countries, but that's an attempt to take a topic, make it educational AND fun and I don't think this set warrents being educational and fun....

Just like Kennywood I attempted to vote and got the response that I had already voted too. Hmmmmmmmm..........

I agree that there's nothing 'fun' about this set but educational? I see no reason why it can't be educational (even if I can't think how immediately).

But, if one agrees that the set can't be *fun* hence only leaving educational as a possible motive (though I don't see how to make it educational either, but for the sale of the arguement we will assume!), then why bother? Education can come in many forms beyond trivializing it in a trading card set, so use a more formal and responsible format to educate people about 9/11 and leave trading cards for fun and entertainment where they belong. At the point where it's NOT fun and borderline educational, then the profit motive becomes it's most redeeming (???) quality and that's icky....A set memoralizing America and all it's landmarks and what-not or it's history (of which a 9/11 card could be a prt of) would be more appropriate, like that set Inkworks did, I think...educational and fun and some $$ went to charity..win win and not potentially upsetting to anyone involved in that day...
Still all that was asked was my personal opinion....Very few tragedies have escaped commercialism in some form or another, not too surprising this one has it version too...we are built on free speech and freedom..business should carry the product and let the customer make it known with his wallet if he approves or not....banning it form stores would be a bad idea, all it does is give it an air of mystery...
