cardaddictOct/Nov 2022 Out?
Yeah, I think I have a laser disc where all 3 GODFATHER movies are presented in chronological order, re-cut to do so, with additional TV footage spliced in.
I'm not certain, but I don't think they were ever released in any other format like that.

David RI think on the GODFATHER you may be thinking of The Godfather Saga. In 1977, they took the first 2 films and broadcast them on TV in a new, edited form where everything was chronological. So it started off in 1901 with the events from GF2 and ended with the events of 1959, the conclusion of GF2. The first GF movie was in between.
And this version had about 45 mins of new footage not seen in GF1 and GF2.
I know this was released on VHS in the 1990s.

Bill MullinsI knew a guy who bought a Betamax just for audio recording. He could make 8 hour tapes, and the S/N and other specs were better than cassettes.

cardaddictHere's what I got.
There is a sticker on the inside cover stating: FIRST EDITION DECEMBER 1992, and it's numbered 1520.
It's a big, heavy box set.
The brochure says, "...etc., etc., Coppola's interweaving of the 3 films and includes scenes not seen theatrically."
I still have the receipt. I paid $187.15 for it.

I think the quality of both Laserdiscs and Betamax was superior to VHS, but for whatever reason it was better for the movie industry, VHS won out.
Now you can hardly find anyone with an old VHS player, let alone trying to find something to play a Laserdisc or Beta tape on. PROGRESS!

cardaddictI have two hooked-up and functioning Laser Disc players in my system, but I never use them (and at least one other stored in my coat closet). In one of them, you don't even have to take the disc out to turn it over!
They are all made for the old TV 4:3 aspect ratio, which means expanding the image if you want to fill a widescreen TV, which further deteriorates the picture.
But I still have a lot of Laser Discs of which I don't have a DVD or Blu-Ray of, and one day I plan on watching them again (maybe).

catskilleagleI think it was as simple as more movies were available on VHS than Laserdisc or Betamax. You could find more in the stores anyway.
A few friends (just a few) still have VCR's so they can watch stuff not available (or more expensive/elusive) on DVD. I've bought some sealed VHS (Babylon 5, Speed Racer, etc.) for the cards still inside and the tapes still play well. I gave whatever tapes a friend wanted and she plays them on a couple of different machines (one she still has and one at a friend's place).

True, but why? The studios supported VHS more, and once that happened Laserdiscs and Betamax were on the path to extinction. All three were competing formats at the same time. I can remember going to a big movie store on Lomg Island that was selling new releases in each of them.
However it wasn't long at all before the Laserdiscs were gone and I think Beta might have even ceased before that. I don't think it was cost, because no early machines were cheap. If I remember correctly VHS might have been the only one that offered recorded taping, or it was easier to tape off of TV. Soon after there was piracy and people started taping the new movies to a second VHS.
I still have quite a few VCR tapes on old movies that weren't transferred to DVD, but I can't remember how to hook up the VCR I still have. Guess all I can do with them now is spin them on my finger.

catskilleagleI was thinking about that. Obviously, the VHS tapes were smaller than laserdiscs but I think the Betamax tapes were a little smaller so it wasn't about storage space. You could file the laserdiscs like vinyl records so storing those didn't take up much space that way. You're probably right about being able to record with VHS. The extra option of being able to record your own stuff on VHS might have been the tipping point to get most people to go all-in with that format. I remember the blank ones being about $20 and then they dropped in price over time.
People were willing to rebuy and switch to DVD because of the higher video quality and the extras (deleted scenes, interviews, documentaries plus stuff like cards and booklets). Sometimes, you got the extras from special edition VHS plus the DVD extras.

wolfieThe war between VHS and Betamax boiled down to one thing in the end, the porn industry.
Betamax was the higher quality system but vhs was cheaper, the porn industry went with vhs and such was their clout at the time the movie industry followed suit.
From that moment on all the other systems were doomed.

Hey wolfie, now that's a definitive answer and I can believe it.

The question is, How did Wolfie come to know this?
October 28, 2022, 03:56 PM
catskilleagleClearly, Wolfie is a media watchdog willing to dive deep into the research to get the answers to burning questions. He might have reviewed dozens of VHS titles in search of those answers.
There was a multi-episode documentary about the porn industry on HBO maybe 20 years ago. Maybe he watched that in case someone asked him about the history of VHS in the future.

barobehereBetamax cassettes also only ran for 73 minutes. So any movie that was longer Had to have two cassettes.
My best friend is a laser disc fanatic. Over a decade ago I was at an estate state and got several hundred laser discs for him. I won the bid at 10 dollars a box and there were 8 or 9 boxes.
