OK, this may be the last update on promos for the Philly Non-Sports Card Show...though you never know....

First of all, we updated our page with all 10 new Breygent Marketing promos that Tom posted in another thread yesterday. See those here along with info on Breygent Marketing Mystery Packs!

Today, I have a real case of Beauties & The Beast....

All paid show attendees will get one random card of the above exclusive brand new Bench Warmer promo cards, numbered 1 through 6.

One other.....

This Monsters & Maniacs promo card (number Promo 1) will be given away from the Roxanne Toser dealer tables. I'm told Todd Riley will have a Monsters & Maniacs card on his table too. The card we have (Promo 1) is pretty limited and will probably not last for the duration of the show.

The Philly Non-Sports Card Show is just two days away now! The show will be held on October 18 & 19 at the Merchants Square Mall in Allentown, PA.

You can see all cards posted thus far collected on the promo page of the Philly Non-Sports Card Show website:

Promos Oct 14

See you at the show!

One more.....

This is a cool metal card by artist Gary Kezele. Gary will have this available for sale at his table for $10. Only 35 exist and will be available on a first come, first served basis. The backs have the show logo on them, are dated, and are hand-signed by Gary along with the number out of 35.

See everyone soon at the show!

I sent this out to a few people who attended. No one have offered any changes so here is the final version of the Promo Checklist. It topped 50.

Promo Checklist Fall 2014

The Checklist has been updated to reflect Cryptozoic Epic Battles P2 (the Cryptomium version of the P1 image). There are not two variations of P1.

In addition there were sell sheets on the freebee table for Three Stooges Chronicles Series 2 and Jeff Zapata had a postcard-sized advert on his table for "30 Years of Garbage" a GPK documentary in the works.

This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bill DeFranzo,

Many thanks to all manufacturers who produced promo's for the Show, especially Breygent for the Fantastic Dexter, Grimm & Kringle cards. Mention should also go to Cryptozoic & RA for their promo's.

Nice list Bill, thanks for putting in the work. My only problem with this list is you place cards on the list that you have to purchase. These cards in any book can not be considered promos. It’s a bad habit that seems to have started with the Metal card craze. Seems like everyone’s having these printed up and selling them for 10 or 15 bucks, but at the same time calling them promos. Just because they promote you, doesn't make them promos, not unless your giving them away at the shows. I like a lot of these cards and purchase a lot of them, but lets stop calling them what they aren’t, PROMOS.

I understand your point of view John but an honest question is who made up the rule that promos had to be free? These cards may cost something but are they not promoting something? In my thinking promos don't need to be free to be a promo. Let's have a good discussion about this.

Well, people like me made the rule and most of the long time promo collectors will agree with me, those of us who collected way before the term promo was coined. . If you do not agree, how long have you collected promos?

I have collected promos as long as they have been around but I am not a promo collector I don't see the idea of collecting a promo just because it's a promo I collect because I like the subject matter but I don't see why it has to be free to be a "promo". None of the dealer promos at the show were free and promo collectors pay big bucks to get promos so again I am missing the point that a promo can only be a promo if it is free. I'm not critiquing but just trying to understand the perspective of promo collectors.

Promos are cards given away to show you product or entice someone to buy your product. You've collected as long as the term promo has been coined? I don't think your that old. Freebie's or sample cards have been around since the 1800's.

Clearly you are not willing to have a reasonable discussion so fair enough.

I can't have a reasonable discussion in type form. My grammar is very poor when it comes to writing and I always come across like I'm mad in the written word and I don't get mad. Maybe I'll make it to a show someday and we can have the discussion in person. Until then you keep your opinion and I'll keep mine.

I could rename the Checklist but I'm not sure to what. Each collector has to define the scope of one's collection. Let's take Ted Dastick's offerings for example. The TD3 was free provided you paid an admission charge. If your only purpose for going to the show was to acquire Ted's card, was it free? If you hustled over to Ted's table to buy his metal TD3b on Saturday or anything else on his table like a $3.00 poker chip, Ted gave you a TD3c card (1st five customers). Since you didn't know that you were receiving the TD3c until after you made a purchase it would be hard to argue that TD3c is not a promo. Ted's intent with all variations was to self-promote and he succeeded.

Since the current title of the checklist is "Promo Card" I could hear from trading card purists who would insist that anything made of metal can't be strictly called a "card". So what words other than "promo" and "card" could I use to describe the checklist and keep everyone happy? "Promotional Stuff and Activities" comes to mind.

In short, it's your collection. You decide. Just know that the checklist tries to list all stuff and activities that may be of interest to attendees regardless of its title. Looking at it another way, why would a checklist for a Philly Show, never held in Philly, have a title that precisely describes its content? Smile

P.S. I really am open to a change in title.

I did really wrestle with how to distribute my promos. It was important that one be given away, as that's how I've always done my promos. I hate when people pay for free cards on Ebay when all they need to do is ask me first if I still have any left.

In using the GPK layout, the cards lend themselves to multiple versions as that's how the main set has always been with the A and B versions. One way or another, I was going to make two versions. But I didn't want to just give them both away at my table at the same time, that's kind of lame. So I worked with Harris on getting the A version into admission packs. Then, while a B version with simply a different name sounded not-so-exciting to me, I decided to do a limited run in the metal format. Being they were special compared to the A, I thought it would be best to sell them to collectors who were more interested in getting the "set," and I figured 25 was a good number to do so. I really didn't expect them all to go the first day!

Then as an extra "thank you" to the folks who bought something from me early - let's face it, if you're coming to my table first, you like my work and I REALLY appreciate it - I created the two /5 metal promos, one for each day. Now my own requirement was that you purchased something to get one, so they technically weren't sold. And as has already been mentioned, other dealers required a purchase to get a promo.

I will admit, I felt a little awkward when I saw the metal variant on the promo checklist, because I know people like to check everything off the list, and I didn't want anyone to feel obligated to buy one simply to be able to check off everything.

I do think a promo is a promo, regardless of how it's distributed. The old promos from the 1800s mentioned above, weren't they generally distributed in packs of cigarettes or candy? That required a purchase. What about the promos in every issue of NSU? You're not going to get them if you don't buy the magazine.

What I'm mainly getting at, is I don't want anybody to be mad about the way I distributed my cards!

I see it both ways.
I'm use to the days that promos were FREE as part of getting the word out about a product.

I also see the artists selling them as part of promoting their work.

Now, are they any different than the dealer that gets the promos, and sales them instead of giving them away.

Then there's the flipper. Nuff said.

Free promos and trading is not really part of the hobby now days, IMO.

And, on a final note, many promos are more INCENTIVE cards.

I quite being a Marvel completest when some companies starting making insanely rare chase cards and case incentives. Okay, I lied about the final note.

For the record, there was no mention or hint of TD3c and TD3d on the Checklist available at the show. TD3b was listed, though, with as much info as I could gleen from public postings in Card Talk. Stay tuned for a couple of changes to the Final Checklist.
