Disclaimer: I know that these are sport, but as they do not fall into the major sports leagues, I thought I would share.

I was out and about today and stopped off at a couple of stores as I was looking to pick up a couple more blasters. I didn't have much luck with my first 3, getting only a pin and a memorbilia (and they were in the same box) but figured it was worth a try, I was only 1 card shy of a base set.

Box 1 had a Todd Rogers (beach vollyball) relic and a Walter Dix (Track & Field) auto, box 2 had a Dotsie Bausch (Cycling) relic only. I hopped over to another store and picked up one more and pulled this...

Michael Phelps gold medal auto 04/15!!!

Congrats, awesome card, and to get it from a retail pack, the odds you beat must have been astounding!!!

Thanks, odds for pulling a gold medal auto from retail are 1:1,230 and it is a 100 card set. How's that for beating the odds? Metal

Because people only post when they hit something. If they open and don't get anything they don't usually post.

ie: 2011 Value boxes. Does there seem to be amazing hits coming out of that product, yes. But I know people that have opened hundreds of them without any major hits. They don't bother to post that so the perception is that every box holds a great high dollar hit.

I have purchased many box blasters and I can't remember pulling anything overly exciting. I have done alright with buying single retail packs, but then again I usually buy a few packs every week on my trip to Target for dog and cat food and litter, and even then the good pulls are few and far between.

There are indeed plenty of times where I strike out and do not post. It is like people at the casino, they will brag when they win $700 but forget to mention the thousands that they blew in previous trips.

Inspired by Iggy's pull, I found some hobby packs in my local shop. Picked up 4 packs and got an Alex Meyer auto, numbered 8/50. He is in open water swimming catagory. These are nice cards, I may pick up a blaster box if I see one.

I picked up a hobby box at my show today and had the following hits:

Ryan Lochte (Swimming) Event Pin
Missy Franklin (Swimming) Gold relic 25/25
Mary Whipple (Rowing) Auto
Conor Dwyer (Swimming) Gold Medal auto 04/15

Kinda cool that the Dwyer has the same serial number as the Phelps.

Picked up two blaster retail boxes.

8 packs per box, 10 cards per pack
1 Flag card
1 COMPLETE (100 cards) base set
several gold, silver & bronze parallels and other chase.(Up to two per pack)

Overall B
Pros: Set completion, parallels, 10 cards per pack, and nice US Flag patch card design.
Cons: Artsy base card look, prefer actual action photos.

I was at Target today planning on buying a blaster, but didn't see any. I did buy 3 packs ($3.19 each? yeesh) and pulled a Troy Dumais autograph. My favorite Olympic sport has always been gymnastics, so I was also happy to pull a silver parallel of Nastia Liukin.

tucker dupree usoc pin card (which i want rid of as soon as poss)

i dont like these cards (no offense) they have a lot of very (very) unsavory, scant clad male cards, some of the swimmers should have been as the female swimmers) posed wearing tracksuits shots.

Nice pickup on the LoLo Jones autograph, she's a popular runner and has been in the news a lot lately. She was supposed to win gold last time around, but it didn't work out. She hung in there and will make another go of it in London (if she makes the team, of course).

As for the scantily clad swimmers, that's eye of the beholder I suppose, but does that mean you are unable to watch Olympic swimming due to how the athletes are dressed? Same thing for the divers. I couldn't imagine not watching those two events, they are among my favorites in the Olympics.
