Great list I will go through my lot and see what can be added etc I include Box Cards in my list as there is one included free with each box.
Also case Cards as these are distributed the same.
Also dealer incentive cards as these are given for buying cases.
Also there are preview sets etc some sold some given away for purchases etc.As these types of Cards are listed in most E Bay sellers Promo lists i have concluded that they are Promos.
Any forum members ideas on these cards

AWR's list looks pretty complete, but I would add Spiderwick SC-1 (he lists just SC-2) and the 2 different mini sets of cards, which were product inserts

I also don't see any of the promos or inserts listed for the Lost in Space movie, or the classic 1960s TV show

There were also promos on the Pinocchio movie and Phantom sets, circa 1996-97

The list that I am putting up is only of cards that I have in my collection.
If the # is not there I do not have the card.
They are available but the shipping cost outweighs the need for the card eg E Bays Global Shipping Programme
There are still possibly 3 pages for me to put up I am only up to H and there is a lot of Inkworks first issues to be listed yet
Also if I do not list a # I am still aware that the card exists

Hi Piko,

I agree that box cards and case cards could be categorized as promos as they are something you get for free when you buy a box or case especially if the card set is promoted on the card. In the same way cards that come as inserts in toys or other products could be categorized as promos.

Where I draw the line would be "preview sets" which are available only as a product to be purchased. They were never given out nor free with a purchase. I can understand someone considering them promos too because of the similar wording but they are more like an extra set of chase cards or an introductory set you can buy before the regular set is released.

I would not use Ebay listings as a guide as to what's a promo and what isn't. Some sellers have labelled cards as "promos" when they certainly are not. They will list regular cards that way because they know they have a chance of reeling in an unwary or beginner collector that way. It's possible that some dealers are just passing on information they were told or they assumed because a lot of stuff on online sites is misidentified (whether it's a card or a fossil or other collectible). I have also seen cards that are promos not listed as such. It's an example of the seller certainly not knowing the item nor the market.

Thank you all

I feel compelled to add one note, because frankly I usually ignore posts that are so hard to read. Check how AWR is posting in this thread. He doesn't use periods either, but he puts a space between paragraphs/sentences.

Maybe this does deserve a separate thread. But I get frustrated when trading cards have misspellings. Do I list them with a "[sic]" or faithfully report what's printed? I refuse to propagate misspelled names when I catch them.

Its not only mis-spellings (or spelt "misspelling" depending on your spell checker). Sometimes things are put in a list that are not on the card. Look at the Promo cards issued by Inkworks for the card title "The Dark is Rising" nowhere does it show The Seeker yet it is listed as The Seeker: The Dark is Rising. Is this is because of the film that was issued using that title?. I have no idea if the actual cards used "The Seeker" text as I never collected them. I'm sure that there are other examples.

regards

John

The title of the movie was The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, but it comes from a five book series of novels. It is one of the titles that drove the nail into Inkworks coffin in 2007, the other one being the Golden Compass. Both of them to some degree were trying to be the next Harry Potter. But Harry Potter films were still going and these two never got beyond the first film.

Now Golden Compass was very expensive to make and the film was not good. It had a nice look, but the novel had overreaching themes that were cut out of the film to make it more entertaining, yet it was a dark story. So the plot never committed to be one thing or the other and it bombed big time. The Inkworks set bombed because it only had costume cards, no autographs at all even though it had big actors and of course the movie lost a ton of money.

The Seeker: The Dark is Rising was different, but came in the same year for Inkworks. I have almost a master set of it and the cards are very good. I say that because practically the entire main cast signed and there are also costume cards. It is very complete coverage for a film.

Nevertheless the cards did not sell well and can be found cheaply today. If you are looking to complete a set at little cost you can still do this one. But no one does because the movie did not do well and has been largely forgotten. It's not a bad film, just average magic adventure with a child lead. It didn't bomb as bad as the Golden Compass because it cost a lot less to make. It wasn't bad enough to be bad, but not really good enough to be good.

Inkworks put a lot into The Seeker cards and came away the big loser, but like I said. If you just look at what they put in the set, the cards are quite complete.

These two products are prime examples of why card companies today, don't want to purchase licenses for movie titles that have not yet been released. It's death to the cards if the movie crashes and burns.
