Below is a scan of a 5-card Promotional Sheet from FPG in 1993. This is from a photo on page 143 of the Promo Card Encyclopedia. If someone
has the actual promo I would like to see a scan or photo of the back of it. You can post it here or email me directly geerts1@q.com. Thanks for the help!

Greg

Hi Albert, I just noticed your post with the link to the scan, thank you. Unfortunately, I'm still confused about this card sheet. I'd like to ask you a couple questions about it if you could drop me an email. Thanks!!

The back supplied by Albert is not related to the front of the one that you posted. (5 cards v. 4; verticle strip v. horizontal strip)

More questions arise. Is the front of the strip of 4 the same as 4 of the 5 on the other? Are there umpteen different ways that a sheet of promos was cut up? Were these cards ever released as individual Promo cards?

Looks like the top card was cut off. 5 cards wide is 12 1/2" if his scanner is like my home scanner he could on fit 11 1/2" of the image on the scan. Hard to tell as scan is small.

I see, now, how the scan of the back was cut off. There are 5 cards but the strip would have been 17 1/2" not 12 1/2" because the cards are "attached" on the 2 1/2" side whereas the scan of the front has the cards "attached on the 3 1/2" side for 12 1/2". In any case, neither will fit into a 9-pocket page. Roll Eyes

That's pretty much what started all this with me. I was going through a box of
misc. promos and found a Michael Kaluta promo that isn't listed in PCE. It is
the same as the one shown on the sheet, tiger with leopard woman. After seeing
this, I just assumed that my card had been cut from one of the sheets (why someone
would do this is beyond me!). I wanted to see the back of the sheet, mainly to
confirm my suspicions. The back of the card I have is the same as other Kaluta
promos. I've included a scan of the back of mine below. I do agree that the scan
from Albert (thanks again!) doesn't seem to match up.

I know that at least 2 cards shown on the sheet were released as individual
promos. The Joe Jusko ERB (center) is the same as the promo from CCPG and
the Bernie Wrightson Series 2 (right) is the same as the P3 promo. As far
as I can tell, the Chris Achilleos card (left) was never released as a single
card and I'm unsure about the Jeffrey Jones Series 2 card as I've never seen
the promo for this set.

There were many oversized "FPG Deluxe" promos released in the 90's and I suppose
my card could have come from one of them. I can't say for sure as I don't have
very many of the deluxe promos in my collectio. One that I do have is in fact
the Michael Kaluta #18 promo and it has the same image as the single card but
is larger (4.5x8).

Again, thanks everyone for the help. The search continues...

Greg

Look What I just found in my stash!! This is the back of a second sheet I have. It's obvious there are at least 2 variations of these sheets.

Well, that answers that then. As I figured, my card was more than likely cut from one of those sheets. Thanks for digging up that second sheet. So, is the front of the first sheet you scanned the same as the second?

Yeap! It's the exact same front. Thank you for allowing me to find out that they weren't the same sheets. Otherwise, I would have probably tossed one of them in the doubles pile and never known the difference.

I have seen the FPG sheets from the early 90's cut into individual cards. Some neatly and some not so!

Well this does raise a question. How can you tell a card issued as a quite rare single from one that has been very carefully cut from a not so rare A4 sized promo sheet?

I'm reviving this ancient thread because it got me to check my own FPG promo strips and I made a discovery that others may or may not know. I have two of the same 5-card strip (as shown by Greg Geerts) with one of them signed by each of the artists (purchased from one of the Friedlander brothers who sold some leftover and unreleased stuff on Ebay in the mid-2000's).

What I noticed is that the Joe Jusko "woman and sabercat" promo has the Ultraworks variant back I've been looking for (I have the CCPG variant back) and that all the cards in the strip are unnumbered. However, the Jusko Ultraworks promo is the only one on the strip listed in the 2008 Promo Card Encyclopedia. I haven't noticed this card for sale or trade recently and PCE2008 doesn't list a source for it. From that, I believe the Jusko Ultraworks promo was released only as part of the strip. The ones that exist as singles were most likely cut by dealers and/or collectors because they were easier to sell (and store as noted by Eric the Architect). Back in the late 90's and early 2000's, oversized promos and uncut sheets/strips were less-popular items even if they fit in one of the binder page variations. Many were cut up for the singles or not saved. It has made some of those sheets harder to find now.

The reason the Jusko card was listed in PCE2008 may be that Jusko is the most popular artist of the FPG sets among card collectors given his work on other card sets, especially the Marvel ones, so that one became the most-often cut and re-circulated. Of course, my speculation could be blown out of the water if someone can report that the Jusko Ultraworks promo was given out at some show - maybe even by Jusko himself at one of his signings. I can say I've never heard of the other cards on the strip being officially released. Someone could point out that Todd Jordan didn't account for all promo cards given out between 1988 and 2008, and that would be true, but he was very thorough in his coverage of major manufacturer releases. He didn't miss many.

I should add that the Bernie Wrightson Series 2 promo on the strip has the same front as the released P3. They just have different backs.

If nothing else, I don't have to keep looking for the Jusko Ultraworks card.

Jess

Regarding the seperation of promo cards from sheets this seems to be a common practice there is a seller on E Bay now selling marvel x Men single cards wich are cards from cut up sheets being sold as single cards although these cards have never been issued as single cards when I enquired about it from them they were quiet forthcoming about it saying yes that they had been cut from sheets the way to recognise these cards is ti compare them to the back of the sheet if the are the same it is a sheet cut up they are cheap but not actual issued cards if a collector dose see one and thinks it is rare or being sold as rare look twice I have purchased a couple not at a high price but thinking that they were actual cards issued by the maker but never did my homework all I can say is do your homework if you want genuine single promo cards
