These special edition DVD/BluRay face plates (or trading cards, as we call them) were issued in late August and are still available at retail, but probably not for too long as they were likely designed to last through Halloween, maybe to the end of November. The full series consists of 13 newly commissioned pieces of poster art, "Mondo" style re-imaginings of the posters for 13 classic MGM (now owned and distributed by Fox) horror movies. They are blank on back and are printed on thin cardstock with brilliant colors. Most seem to make it through the packaging process in Near Mint condition or so if they are carefully removed from the packaging. The rubber cement type glue that adheres them to the front of the DVD/Bluray case is clear and doesn't stain the cards, but that may not be true for any cards that remain stuck to those cases for an extended time. In other words, if you pick any of these up, it may be a good idea to remove the cards from the cases they're stuck to if only to get rid of the glue that holds them on. These each came with the corresponding DVD or Blu-Ray of the same film. Once the card is removed from the outside of the case, the DVD shows the standard cover, not this new artwork. There is a sticker on the outside of each shrinkwrapped DVD or BluRay which reads: "MGM 90th Anniversary includes LIMITED EDITION COLLECTIBLE CARD with EXCLUSIVE ARTWORK" While all 13 pieces really are well done, these two are my favorites: This picture shows both variations of the sizes these come in. The DVD cards are larger, pretty much the exact size of a DVD case, and they have sharp corners. The Blu-Ray versions are a little smaller, the size of a Blu-Ray case, and have rounded corners. All 13 cards come in both versions. And here are the rest. These pictures are from the Fox Connect website which shows the Canadian versions. The US versions, like the ones in the pictures above won't have the French bi-lingual text is required on Canadian releases, so the U.S versions will have a little less clutter to obscure the art as a result. As for the odd inclusion of the comedy "Teen Wolf" in with the rest, it's probably nevertheless for the same reason the other 12 are in there, which is Fox likely wanted to unload some unsold DVDs and BluRays. One you get past the cards, it's an odd mix of titles in terms of their content, as well. Some of them are the bare bones releases with little to no special content, whereas some are special editions with lots of bonus material. The DVDs were all manufactured between 2004 and 2012 with the exception of "Teen Wolf" and "Misery" which are from 2014. Those two, along with "Killer Klowns", "Jeepers Creepers", and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" seem to have no special features, and "Silence of the Lambs" includes only the theatrical trailer. The other seven have lots of bonus material, especially "Species", which is a 2-disc special edition, so if you can get those ones with the card, they are an especially nice bargain (especially if you can get them for $3 apiece, like I did!). The DVDs retail for $6 each, but Fox Connect has lots of discount sales. The BluRays retail for $10, but I got a 4 pack of them with the cards at Costco for $14.99, so those were only $4 each, tax included that way. It may be worth checking out your local Costco if interested in the cards/movies to see if they have any left, but the one I found was the absolute last one at mine and there was just one of it. The 4 pack included "Jeepers", "Killer Klowns", "Teen Wolf", and "Return of the Living Dead". As with the DVD versions with the cards, the Blu-rays of "Teen Wolf" and "Killer Klowns" are the bare bones releases, but the "Jeepers" has some nice bonus material lacking on the DVD, so it's a nice upgrade. The "Return of the Living Dead" blu-ray has all the bonus features of the excellent DVD version. Happy hunting! ____________________ Everywhere around this burg they're running out of verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Everywhere around this town, they're running out of nouns. | |||
