Lincecum is gonna dominate for the next 10 years as a pitcher. if you look at it, historically, world class pitchers, unless they destroy their own fan base with horrible behavior, thoes are the cards that really hold value. Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, and up untill recently, roger clemens. They always sold at the very top value of any card set they were in. Pitchers , when they hold through and have a career, are great investments. Its just, so many of them wash out in their first 2 years. Look at the speculation of kerry wood and mark prior, or rick ankiel. Show some talent, be young, be able to bust it inside at 97+ MPH, and you will see some heavy hobby love.

But as you yourself point out pitchers are fragile and investing in them is probably the worst thing you can do.

Wood, Prior and Ankiel as examples were not just hot prospects. When their rookie cards debuted certain inserts were over 3 figures. Now the same cards are in bargain boxes. If you bought them when they came out you took a bath. This is the problem with sportscards.

Prospects are being priced as though they were hall of famers before they even prove anything. And the stars that truly are in the Hall of Fame get no respect because they are no longer playing. Its was just that kind of twisted logic that made me into a non-sport card collector.

But, he said he is looking for a player to collect, so i would go with a guy who most likely WONT break down. Kerry wood is still throwing, and ankiel didnt break down so much physically as mentally, but he is a HELL of a everyday player still. Prior yeah though, but like i said, they are taking care of lincecum. Besides, look at what Wood graded rookies sell for, they still command good money. thats what to collect, good rookies and inserts bought on the cheap.
