Caught a doubleheader concert last night with Styx and Boston, and wanted to give a quick review of the show.

Styx opened the show, and played for about an hour. Played most of the big hits, leaving out some obviously Dennis DeYoung songs (Lady, Mr. Roboto, Don't Let It End). I saw them a few years ago, and commented then that they seemed tight and well played. The same comment held true last night. My wife and son both enjoyed the songs and playing, as did most of the crowd.

Boston took the stage after about a 30-minute intermission. While they played most of their big songs, they did not seem to be a cohesive group. Having two lead vocalists makes things a little different, especially since both singers are trying desperately to fill the shoes of Brad Delp. It was nice to hear some songs that I really did not expect to hear, such as "Hitch a Ride" and "Smoking", but something just wasn't quite right with the band.

I have only seen Boston in concert once before, so I forgot how much of their show is a Tom Scholz ego-fest. I realize the guy writes all (or most) of the songs and is the driving force behind the band, but come on--give someone else a chance to show their talents! The drummer was definitely holding his own last night, but the other band members seemed like they were mostly support and blended into the backgroud.

I am a fan of classic rock, so it was a blast to see these bands from my teenage days, but I was left feeling somewhat let down by the performance of Boston. I suppose that losing Brad Delp hurt them more than just the loss of a vocalist.

Anyone else seen either of their other performances yet this summer? I'm curious to get other thoughts on both bands.

ROCK ON ! Metal

Boston has been one of the most talented self destructive bands I have ever seen. They have been their own worst enemy for years.

I have seen Styx several times...Lance Gowan is no Dennis DeYoung but they certainly put on a great show. I even think that Todd Sucherman is a better drummer than John Panozzo was.

The best show I saw was Styx, REO Speedwagon and Survivor.
