According to a new article in Variety magazine, the Bond producers are in the very early stages of looking for a new 007 and it may be a few years before they find someone.

Well, not trying to spoil anything for anybody, but isn't he supposed to be dead? Like in a thousand pieces and poisoned for good measure. Big Grin

At the end of the movie it was stated, "James Bond will return."

I had to turn down the role because I could not do a convincing enough British accent.

They could do something from the 50s or 60s

James Bond doesn't have to be the same person. They haven't said it outright before but how would you explain one guy saving the world in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and well into the 21st century and still be somewhere in his 40s-50's? Someone else could become James Bond. In "Octopussy," agent 009 was killed. We'd have to assume another agent became 009 to maintain the readiness of the group.

You know, another guy did alright with a Scottish accent. You should have tried that.

This has been debated before as to whether James Bond is his real name or a code name. The issue has been settled because in 2012's SkyFall he visits the graves of his parents, which included Thomas Bond. As for whether the 6 actors who played 007 in the movies are the same person, that has been settled as well. At least Connery through Brosnan are the same person because they make references to prior incidents that the other actors had in their movies, including gadgets previously used and most notably Bond's deceased wife

Doesn't George Lazenby say something like, "This never happened to the other fellow?" in the pre-credit sequence of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE?

007 doesn't have to be the same person.

James Bond doesn't have to be the same Actor.

But if "James Bond will return", then it has to be the character of James Bond that will return or else you can't call him James Bond.

However, when they made such a big deal of ending "No Time To Die" the way they did, it's pretty disingenuous to say, "Forget about all that, he went out the secret back door". Bond was escapist entertainment until they went for Craig and realism. So now James Bond is realistically dead, and the franchise is over. Start another one if you must, but not with that character or any tie-in title.

Here are the instances in which they referenced prior films:

In the second film, "From Russia With Love" (1963) they mention Doctor No (the villain from the first film) and Bond having gone to Jamaica.

In "Goldfinger" (1964) Bond once again mentions going to Jamaica in "Dr. No" and he references his attache case (From Russia With Love)

In "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969), Bond looks at items from Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Thunderball (1965). This is the film in which his wife dies.

References to Bond's wife in the Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton films, "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977), "For Your Eyes Only" (1981) and "Licence to Kill" (1989).

In a deleted scene from "A View to a Kill" (1985), found on the DVDs, Bond is shown to be in the possession of the watch used in "From Russia With Love."

In "Die Another Day" (2002), many gadgets from the older films are shown, including the jetpack from "Thunderball"

Furthermore, CIA agent Felix Leiter is also in 4 of the Connery films, 1 Moore film, 2 Dalton films, and 3 of the Craig films. David Hedison played him in the Moore and second Dalton films, thus establishing continuity there.

I remember Roger Moore putting flowers on his wife's grave.

Regarding him dying in the latest film, did they actually show his corpse ? Or him literally being blown to pieces ? If not, then there is always a way out ! Smile

Well Daniel Craig certainly thinks his Bond died because he's cried about his character's self-sacrifice to anyone who would listen in interviews. You can't watch "No Time To Die" and think he didn't die because there was no time to escape, but just time enough to give his heartfelt parting soliloquy.

You're right, there is always a way out for the desperate. It could all be a dream, like in the wiped-out season of "Dallas", but that would be very dishonest here. The producers decided to follow this storyline and they killed him. The fans paid to follow it and see the ending, whether they liked it or not.

If the Bond producers painted themselves into a corner, that's where they should stay. Find another popular 007 if they can but Bond is dead, and fans of the series should hold them to it.

Yes, that's why I wonder if the producer was already thinking about a different agent taking on the name and number. At some point, the original Bond would have been killed, fired or injured enough to retire or he would have retired as he did in "Never Say Never Again" (yeah, I know that movie doesn't count though it was a good movie). If someone else can be Batman or Spider-Man, what's the big deal?

The movies might be starting over fresh. Would they redo "Dr. No?" Would they set it at a different time or would they want to set it in the early 60's. Now, it would be a period piece like "Mad Men."

As a side note, and sort of related to what Jess has been saying, since 2008 there have been 6 new James Bond novels published, and 5 of them have been set in the 1950s/1960s like the original Fleming books.

Only 1 of them has been set in the present day, as were the 20 Bond novels published between 1981 and 2002, authored by John Gardner and Raymond Benson.

It's the James Bond films.
Is a new film with a living James Bond really that improbable?

I'm a comic fan and long gave up on worrying about a character dying. I knew they'd come back - except for Uncle Ben. Bucky, too, but he came back as well.

The producers have just been speaking on the radio and said they are not even thinking about the next Bond film until next year.

Henry Cavill has confirmed that he's returning in a solo Superman film, so that likely means he won't be Bond anytime soon.
