Gordon Lightfoot has passed away at 84. At one time he was putting out a string of memorable songs like "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", "Ribbon of Darkness", and "Sundown". But if he had only written one song, I would remember him for the beautiful "If You Could Read My Mind". RIP Rainy Day Man.

catskilleagleSad news on rainy night here in northern California. My dad is still a big fan of Lightfoot. He was playing his records in the 70's along with those of Jim Croce, Glen Campbell, and Neil Diamond. I always liked "Carefree Highway," "Rainy Day People," (I've quoted that one on rainy days even into this year) and "If You Could Read My Mind" - tough not to sing along with that one. I think people used to sing "The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald" in bars.

stevetrekI have always been a big fan and I listen to his music often. His songs have been recorded by many other singers.

RavenJust heard of the the passing of Tina Turner at 83. I feel terrible, she was "simply the best". Her shows were fantastic and when she came on as the second act to the likes of Jagger and the Stones, she blew them all away. There isn't a female artist now that could hold a candle to her and she was performing into her 70's. She was absolutely the Queen and no can compare to her. RIP My Lady.

RavenJust saw the offhand reports that these two gentlemen recently passed away, George Maharis at 94 and Ed Ames at 95. They have been out of the limelight for many years but had successful careers in their prime and I remember them both.

Tommy CTreat Williams died in a motorcycle accident in Vermont, age 71. He did movies in the late 1970s and early 80s but never became a major star. Over the past 20 plus years he found more success on TV

Tommy CBritish actress Glenda Jackson, who won 2 Oscars in the early 1970s, has died at 87.

RavenGlenda Jackson quit acting in 1991 for a political career and returned in 2015. She was a Socialist and generally very outspoken against the established party. I don't know how successful her time in Parliament is regarded in the UK, not for me to say.
She was a superb actor, and I was very impressed by her series "Elizabeth R". I think she nailed Queen Elizabeth the First better than anyone has. She played the same role in "Mary, Queen of Scots".
Besides those, "A Touch of Class" and "Hopscotch" were favorites of mine, but being a film star must not have been that important to her. I understand she was fantastic in the theatre. She wasn't your run of the mill talent. I still watch the DVD of "Elizabeth R" now and again. RIP Ms. Jackson.

RavenThere is a good chance that they have finally found the remains of Julian Sands near where he went missing by Mt. Baldy way back in January.
The identity of the body has not been confirmed yet, but it would be better for his family to be able to have a funeral.
He was a good actor who did a few quirky roles and kind of got typecasted as a quirky villain in many movies and TV shows. I liked him, as he always gave a believable performance in some strange roles. If his death is confirmed, he did appear on non-sport cards and has at least a couple of autograph cards.

RavenBirkin was very "continental" and her heyday was long ago, so many people in the US probably didn't recognize the name. She was big in her time.
The best thing I saw her in was 1982's "Evil Under the Sun". a fun Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot mystery. It had an all-star cast and I highly recommend seeing it as an old movie, set in even older times.
Branagh was supposed to remake "Evil Under the Sun" as his next Poirot movie. I'm not sure if it was completed, his last Christie remakes have been horrible to sit through and did not do well at the box office. See the originals.

Was too young to see either film in the theater, I think the first movie I saw from him was Sorcerer and then saw French Connection on TV. One of my favs was To Live and Die in LA.

RavenAnother one that feels a little personal, Robbie Robertson of The Band has passed away at 80.
I really liked their music at the time when they were playing their hits and backing up with Dylan and other legends in the 70's. The first time I ever went to a movie theatre to see what was basically a concert film was for the terrific "The Last Waltz".
The Band busted up really badly and, unlike many other group break ups, they remained angry and never got back together again. Robertson still had a significant solo career, but more behind the scenes with movie scores, until like everyone else you didn't hear about him much.
Still, his music and his playing will remain. I'm happy to have the original LPs and listen to them occasionally. RIP Mr. Robertson, you were always the best looking one.

catskilleagleOh yeah, I mentioned liking "To Live and Die in L.A." in another thread. It was great seeing the car chase at a theater with a bigger than usual screen. Years later, after talking about it with a friend who likes it even more than I do, he sent me a copy of the soundtrack.
