Artists getting back their selected 6 pieces must mean that Topps are putting the final finishing touches to the set!!!! Which in turn greatly means that we can expect the Jan 23 release date to hold true!!! Metal

I don't think they get them back until the set is released but the artists have scanned them. Some are selling them privately, some are keeping them and some will be putting them on ebay. Here's the page on the scoundrel board where a lot of artists posted their returned sketches.

three from one artist or one from each of three?

I've got 6 return sketches reserved. I wish I could afford more. I'm hoping for some very lucky sketch card pulls from my 10 cases. Or I hope for some rare autos that I will sell/trade to get my preferred sketches. I was pretty disappointed with the second season of the show so I know if I did not have these great sketch card inserts to look forward to, I'd be a lot less anxious for these cards to come out.

1 from 1 artist and 2 from another. A Niki and 2 Claire's respectively. I'd have loved to get more but with X-Mas so close I can't really afford any more card related stuff for a while. I wish I'd saved enough to take a shot at that Cat Staggs Claire card but I'm sure it'll be long gone before I could even think of making an offer.

What kind of money will be expected to pay for 1 of the 6 returned cards. I'd love to get 1 or 2 but have no idea about prices seeing as I've never purchased from an artist before.

Quite a lot of money as these 6 represent the real payment to the artists for the work they do on the set

It all depends on which artists and how detailed the sketch is. I would expect collectors to pay a minimum of at least US$100 for each of the returned sketches.

Just preordered two boxes at a pretty good price. Now sit and back and wait for the release date. Big Grin

Are the hobby boxes going to have any chase cards and if yes what?

At least $100.
I saw an artists taking requests for over $300 but really wanted $800.

I can't afford that, But I know others can.

how much a returned card goes for depends on a few different things:

How much in demand that artist is:
its as simple as "some artists are fan favorites more than others". And this can vary set by set. An artist that might be a fan-favorite for Lord Of the Rings might not be on Heroes. Example; a Tim Sale Heroes card will go for many times more what a card of him on something he is not directly related to would.

How many cards that artist has in the regular set:
if the artist has done 1000 cards, you might decide to take a risk and see if you can pull one or buy one on ebay. If the artist only did 50, then you might want to pay that artist directly for a 6 back card,as opposed to trying to fight other collectors for the few that make it to ebay.

Card Content:
Some people will pay more for certain key characters. Maybe its what they collect, or maybe that character is pivotal to the property. An example would be the Marvel Masterpieces set. Because Zombies are really popular now, I hear alot of people saying that they'd pay more for a Zombie Spiderman than they would a regular one. Some people prefer to buy colored cards; so they go for more. Some want action scenes versus portraits... you can see the variations on this could be limitless.

Rarity:
you might have an aritst that just never does cards. Or maybe they did only 5 cards. Or maybe thats the ONLY card of Sauroman that they did....

I'm sure I'm missing some reasons why a returned card can go for what they do. Anyone care to add...?

As stated, there are a myriad of factors that go into the pricing. Who the artist is, how many pack inserted cards they did (say they did just 50 pack inserted cards, chances are those will be going for $200 or more and the returned cards are usually a notch or 2 better, if they did 500 chances are they will be more affordable). The character or scene on a card will also play a factor, using LOTR as an example collectors will usually pay much more for an Arwen sketch than an Orc, even by the same artist and of similar quality. Color vs. pencil or Ink could also be a factor, sometimes only the returned cards are fully colored or perhaps only a very small % of the pack inserted cards are colored so getting one of the returned cards is a way of guaranteeing you get 1 of them. The prices vary wildly, I made a number of inquiries and the very lowest asking price was $100 and the very highest was $1250.

I think it's because if an artist has chosen particular returned cards, they usually consider them their best or favourite work for that set, therefore having that "something special" element.

Something I like to do? If you request one of my 6-back before I have had to send them in, I'll let the collector pick thier own from all of the ones I have drawn, instead of picking one from the six I have requested. I did that on Star Wars and on LOTR Masterpieces.

So, any hints on which 6 artist returned sketches you picked up? I checked with Cynthia Cummens and got the OK to show the 2 I purchased from her. I'm especially pleased with the first one, one of the best sketches in the entire set in my opinion and I ordered it blind, committing to buy it before she had even drawn it. Big Grin The other one is quite fetching too. Wink
