The problem is that "back in the day" you didn't pay $2.50 a pack either. People want a little more for their money because they are being asked for a great deal more money these days. And "back in the day" you did have chase cards, usually a sticker set. Much better than 5 foils[Dark Angel], or worse yet nothing at all [Daredevil]. Modern sets with modern prices deserve modern inserts to provide value in a box [or pack]. We'll see what Topps comes up with. Remember, they have not even officially announced that they will be doing this set. What drove the prices of boxes and cases up in the first place were chase cards. I mean when you're guaranteed at least 1 or 2 autographs per box, and there are 20+ different stars signing per set, it's gonna cost alot. The stars don't sign for free. I thinks it's become a game of how can our card company outdo that "other" card company? How many more chase cards can we add? I agree that the price of the product you get should be in sync with the quality and number of chase cards. But if you're gonna have less chase cards, then lower the price. I myself quit buying boxes years ago because of the price. I happen to also collect autographs on a casual level. I know how much a star is gonna charge for an autograph at a show. It's often cheaper to actually go to the show, meet the star, plunk down the $15-$30 and watch them sign that 8x10. Sometimes these auto cards get absolutely outrageous on eBay, and it only makes me laugh. On the other hand, I also see great deals on some of the "lesser" stars' signed cards. As you can tell, I'm not a modern "master set" kinda guy. Collect what ya like IS a good philosophy. So simple. Now I'm gonna go stare at all my 70's and 80's Topps "master" sets. ____________________ "Take Absurdity To Lunch!" |

if you can make packs cost 20 cents a piece, and card sets of major licenses have 200+ base card checklists, im down for the cause to do away with inserts/autographs. If you cant however, and i have to pay 2.99 for one pack, i really expect a lot of good autograph potential and inserts that are creative and interesting to collect. end of story.

Well I am upto date on the UK airing schedule and am totally addicted to this show. My opinion is open on the Topps licence as they are very hit and miss with their sets I had Dark angel when it was out and at the time it was a stinker but now boxes are rather expensive, so from a collectibility point of view this set should have a lot of upside considering the youth of many of its stars. I will be buying regardless as the show is so awesome.

Gutted - to me this felt so much like it would be best served by Inkworks. I mean - I like Heroes, so it'll mean parting with the cash whoever does it, but I expect I will be disappointed in the end product if it is Topps. It'd be like staying in a 3 star hotel for the same money as a 5 star one. ____________________ Buddha goes up to a hotdog vendor and says, 'Make me one with everything' =================== Currently collecting: Marvel Masterpieces - 1996, 2007/2008 sets, especially 2008 set 2 writer autos, Marvel Moments and X-Men subsets. I am very happy about the fact that Heroes will become a trading card set
But.. I have to admit I am a bit skeptical about Topps being the manufacturer They can make a great set but they can also ruin it. And the discussion about the chase cards? Come on!!! There just have to be lots and lots of chase cards, what else makes it fun to buy boxes and ripp open packs!! Only auto's (one per 72 packs...) doesn't cut it, there's gotta be something for everyone So Topps, surprise me and do you're damned best!I'll be buying some boxes no matter what but i fyou make this work I'll go for a case or two... |

I am a little confused here, everyone talks about how they want chase cards blah blah and then act like they are paying the same for a box of Topps and a box of Ink or RA when in fact the prices are VASTLY different for boxes from those 3 companies.
MSRP on Topps products are usually $45-$50 per box, but Ink is normally in the $65 range, and RA about $80 - so how can you really compare them? I am lookinmg forward to this more than I would if it was from RA or Inkworks because we will get a vast variety of ways to buy and collect. Maybe some tins and rack packs (and exclusive cards) etc - I dont care about autos at all. Forget em is what I say, and actually, I wont buy any boxes any more which have autos in them, I will just wait until all the auto scavengers get done cracking hundreds of boxes and dump all teh chase and base sets for next to nothing. |

Haha! That's also a way to look at it...
My point is I don't care much about the price of a box. I just want a good product and if that means paying more, no problem. Some of you will certainly disagree I happen to like autocards and PW etc. So when I dump my base sets for a few bucks you'll be happy too! A win-win situation, everyone's happy And i just have to ask: what is a rack pack???! Something to do with the differnece between a retailbox and a hobbybox? I never got that also.. One has auto's the other doesn't? A bit confusing... |

Dan, its probably because a lot of the people posting aren't based in the USA. By the time the cards get over here we pay more or less the same kind of figure no matter who made them (£35 - £45 per box). The only exception is locally produced cards like Dr Who, CSI etc which can be bought signifigantly cheaper than anything that has to be imported. For the pack buyer the waters are even muddier. Topps cards (like the last Star Wars set) sell often at £2.99 per pack in places like ToysRUs (thats close to $6) where as my local FP has the latest Inkworks releases at £1.75 per pack and RA releases at £1.99 per pack. ____________________ Aahhh, Beer! – The cause of, and solution to all our problems. |

Yikes Pat! Thats crazy! $6 a pack! wow.
A Rack Pack is the clear poly pack which usually has 2 or 3 sections full of cards (I have seen some with 4 though) and is intended to hang from a peg board. Topps is the only one still using this format I believe. Edited to add this blurb from our jointly created definitions document: "Rack Pack: mixed common cards occasionally with a chase card which are in a plastic/cello wrapper expressly made for hanging on pegs in stores – may have 1 or more than one section holding the cards – the typical rack pack has 2 or 3 sections" |

i stopped buying single packets when the price went from about £1.75 to £2.99. you can buy a cd for that price.
As for topps, when you do look at their past licenses then they were one of the only manufactueres. It is a pity that their past few havent been as successful as RA and Inkworks, but this could be their best set, and bring them into the running with the big ones. |
