I just don't get it.

How in the world is that a 6 back card?

IMO, I don't see any difference to that than one of his monkey scratches.

That's fantastic! Not the sketch necessarily (very nice btw) but the fact that Mr Waterhouse will open his package from Topps (expecting 6 premium cards) but only finding 5 + 1 disappointingly lame skull sketch. Hope he likes the taste of his own medicine Razz

Are you sure this was meant to be a Waterhouse 6-back? And without sounding totally stupid are you sure its definately Waterhouse? I only ask because he has a million different signatures plus he doesn't post on any card/art forums so we don't know what his 6-backs will be, at least as far as I'm aware.

But I do hope you are right and they sent him a crappy skull 'sketch' in exchange.

Ummm. it's a joke ... I think ... it is certainly far more elaborate(word used loosely) than his skull sketches .

Search feebay for waterhouse sketches and you will see this signature on a few skulls and other lotr cards . Also, the ONLY other artist with those initials on this set is Rich Woodall and that is DEFINATELY not his signature or his work !.... for CLARIFICATION this is a JOKE ... or perhaps possibly the truth as NOTHING resembles his other 3000 sketch cards from this set... just the possibility of this being a "6 Back" Waterhouse card and Waterhouse receiving a skull instead of this GEM is just worth the assumption Drool

this is the third one of these I have seen pop up now. Another one on another board and one hit Ebay when the set first went live.

I think the one at auction went for around $80.

The one on Scoundrel is from right when the set released, not the one you just posted over there as well.

Not to be the bearer of shocking tidings, but Waterhouse is a good artist. Do some googling and check out his stuff. He only sells his sketch cards short.

If those cards were drawn by Waterhouse, I find it interesting how his signature is so much more legible on the cards that are not mass-produced scribbles. Maybe there is some sense of shame there after all...I know I wouldn't want to put my name on something that so obviously took so little effort. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it Razz

I have said a few times that RW is a good artist, his work on some of the Avatar Horror comics has been very very nice, he also happens to be a hack who is simply drawing way below his ability for a ton of cash.

Wow, that is a great sketch! It's a shame he's killing his name with all the skulls and smoking Gandalfs, if he consistently put out sketches like this, I'm sure he'd be a fave of many collectors!

in fact, he is not a good artist. A good artist would not do do thoes 37 secound sketchs and put them out there as his calling card. I mean, think about it, what do people know about his work? that its really bad everytime you pull it (if you can even call it work), and that it ruins every product you find it in...He has some technical skill, yes. He can physically produce quality drawings, yes. But, his sketch card work, the work he allows out there to speak for him...sort of precludes him from being called an artist. An artist puts something into their work...he does not.

p.s. btw, dont go crying any for mr. RW. he knows this is his model, he knows people feel sad to see his name on the list of "artists" on any product now, and he is fine with it. He keeps doing the same thing over and over, so clearly he understands he is really sorta hurting people yet he is profiting (pulling 10 of his sketchs in one case, will hurt you lol) knowing he is taking it out on others, and so he is obviously ok with it, and the fall out from it (i.e. we know were in for a cruel joke when we pull one of his pen scratchs).

Wow. Just...wow. I've always wondered what the quality of a Waterhouse 6-back would be and now I have some idea (even if it wasn't for sure a real 6-back). I figured there was some talent in there somewhere.
