Does anyone have any more info about this set?
Any pics of the base cards and/or promos?

I've talked to Steve C. at Rittenhouse Archives before and he mentioned that the base cards were the last thing they print. So, if UD does the same thing I'm doubting you'll get a sneak peek this early.

But I am interested in seeing more of the artists line up for sketch cards. Big Grin

So RA is having these cards done up for UD?
I can't say the rumor I heard exactly, but I'm starting to doubt they will be like the Masterpieces that Fleer did.
I sure hope it's 100% painted artwork, and not comic style. If it is, that's going to be another let down.

Hi Tattoox:

I think you better go back and re-read. I don't believe what you wrote is true. You might have misread things a bit.

As for the "rumors you have heard" -- I can't really comment on that since I have no idea what you have heard. Wink

You're right. I misread what Goldenavenger wrote.

Well, I can say this about what I heard.
Doesn't sound like it will be original, previously unreleased artwork.
Doesn't sound like the Masterpieces that we have always loved from Fleer.
So that and parrells have me turned off of this set right now. I'll buy the basic, since I'm a major Marvel card collector.
I just hope the info and my assumptions are wrong.

No problem. The only reason I called you on it was that's how rumors and misinformation get started and I wanted to be sure no took that as fact.

I think everyone should wait until the set is announced and they see the set before they make judgements. Just chill people, hopefully none of you will be disappointed. Thumb Up Wink

By what I've heard, and I hope I'm wrong, this should be called Marvel Gallery, not Materpieces.

Well, the thing that made the skybox sets masterpieceswas that they were painted artwork. Otherwise more correctly they were Universe, or Legends, or whatever.

The downside is that is also what killed the cards. Skybox had to pay SO much to Boris & Julie to do the 96 set that the wholesale $ was huge, translating to even bigger retail $, to the state of the comic market at the time, to check the $ of a set of them now.

I just hope that the set is well done. The sketch cards are kickass & the inserts are cool. But, if the artwork isnt original at all, the set should be called something else to avoid collector backlash later.

Exactly.
I understand the money issue and recycled art.
Some painted comic covers would be great, but not what I heard they're doing.
I'm not saying until I get confirmation from else where.

I don't mean to keep nagging, you, Tattoox, but I gotta ask -- What aren't you saying? Don't get me wrong -- I am not looking for you to post the rumors that you have heard. But you keep saying this is going to be bad; or it's not going to be this and not going to be that. Then you say "But I won't say anything until I hear more."

I don't get where you are coming from.

Again, I don't mean to keep singling you out but bashing sets before they're even announced is a sore point with me.

I remember when SportsNet was all the rage with sports card dealers and the dealers there would kill products, even before they came out. That's horrible and not at all healthy for the hobby.

Okay Harris.
I'm waiting for Upper Deck to reply to my emails (two contact sources) to give me more info to put to rest the rumor I heard from other sources.
Or, you can post the Exclusive card, if you have it, then I will be able to elaborate.

I'm just saying that I was sooo excited when I heard about an upcoming Masterpiece set.

Then the excitement lowered when I read about all the parallels.

Later when I heard the rumors, I only want a base set just to keep up on my Marvel card collection. Nothing to brag about.

I sure hope this set will be what I hope for.

I was not overly impressed with the Marvel Avengers. Just happy to see some Marvel art cards.

Okay, my fears from the rumors are true, but not as bad as I thought.

That is, the artwork will be from the Marvel Vs TCG.
Good news is, we'll see more of the original piece.
Also, some art that was never used before.
And perhaps some art from other sources.

So, I feel alot better about this set.

Still don't like the parellels, and think the series should be call something different; like Marvel Gallery.

Like other posters I am looking forward to this and hoping there will be some new art. However, if they highlight some of the recent very cool art done by artists like Michael Turner, Greg Land and David Finch I will be happy. Furthermore if they were to get any of these artists to do even a few sketches I would be delighted.

Any collector out there thinking your going to get a big name comic artist to work for a dollar a card yes that is the pay given to artists for this Marvel set, a dollar a card, your living in the twilight zone. Come back to earth. I wouldnt expect to see much color for those kind of prices. It is my personal belief that some collectors have come to expect top notch quality but dont want to pay for it. This is an opinion and there are exceptions. How long will artists continue to put their all into these projects when the monetary compensation just isnt there. I have but one question, has the price of trading cards gone up drastically over the last 10 years? The price major companies pay artists to work on these projects has not increased. But I think the level of quality in artwork has gone up. Like Rich said keep your shirts on, wait and see, you might be impressed, you may not, either way its something new to collect, or not.

Wow, $1 a card? That must be the lowest pay for any recent sketch set, I seem to recall hearing even TOPPS was $1.50 and Rittenhouse is much better than that. From what I've seen so far Marvel Masterpieces will be priced in the same range as DC Legacy and Star Wars 30th (adjusting for 8 boxes as compared to 12). Unless there is some surprises in this set I'll keep pumping my spare card $$$ into DC and SW. At least with those 2 sets I know the quality is way up there and for a lot of artists there was a real passion for the subject matter which pushes the quality far higher than the compensation would account for.

Is Upperdeck giving any sketches back to the artists like Topps does to help compensate the artists for the low pay?

As I said above, why doesn't everyone just wait tunil its announced? All this negative energy does noone any good. I'm glad you guys are passionate about your collecting, but all speculation does is cause everyone to panic about things that may or may not be true. I don't understand how people can bury something without even seeing the product first.................

I'm a DC girl primarily, but I'll likely buy a box of the Marvel cards. I rarely collect parallels so I'm not worried about those chase cards. I'll be nice to see more interpretations of characters on the cards. I'm sure we'll see samples before the product is released...
