That's sad news because the first set was really good,I thought, and I did get the Tony Stark and Terrance Howard autos. ClapI put them both together in an Ultra-Pro 2-card holder, and they look great! Thumb Up

Technically I don't think RA lost the Marvel license. UD always had the license and RA sub-let the license for a time being. (too short)

I do not belive that to be the case. Back when Complete Avengers came out, RA did sub-let the license, but I belive that RA has had their own limited lecense for the last few years. Otherwise, they would not be able to produce anything now as UD can not sub-let something that they do not have.

if you check the box of ironman 1 its rittenhouse that made the cards but upperdeck's symbol is on there as well leading me to think there was some sub-letting going on

Hmmm, this might be good news for me since a Robert Downey Jr "Iron Man" auto should increase supply and drive the prices of the "Tony Stark" autos down to more affordable levels (havn't seen one under $300 for a while). Its happened with the Tobey Maguire (Spiderman/Peter Parker) & Edward Norton (Hulk/Bruce Banner) autos. So maybe....

I definitely think the value of Downey's Tony Stark autograph will drop some once his expansion auto comes out. I'm torn on this. On the one hand I'm excited that he's signing again as Iron Man (and maybe even again for Iron Man 2 next year). It's going to be great to be able to get different versions of his autograph. On the other hand, I paid $300 for his Stark autograph (with "2008" inscribed under his name) and I kinda liked thinking it may be the only time he ever signs, at least for Iron Man. I guess now I feel my card lost just a little bit of it's juice. Don't get me wrong it's still a very special card to me but I'm not sure I would pay $300 or more for one now with this news. I would imagine that once the expansion set comes out the first one will be selling for around $150-$200. I think it will still hold more than Edward Norton and Tobey because he's hotter right now and his charisma makes people like him more.

I really don't care for these expansion sets. If you look at the initial cost to purchase direct from Rittenhouses website, the aftermarket value is just not there. Now if you are a collector who can afford them than it is a better opportunity to get what you want. I just don't like how it de-values the previous sets in which you had to acquire the VERY LIMITED Autos the hard way! PACK BUSTING! Twak

I believe it was $333.

You are correct. So it originally cost $333.00 and almost right after they became live you could buy the set for between $199.00 and $225.00 and now you can get them as low as $150.00 if you play your cards right!

That's why I'm hoping that the Iron Man set has something else "big" in it other than the second Downey autograph to justify it's cost (that's assuming it's going to be $300+ no matter what's in it). Like maybe a Paltrow autograph and/or a Leslie Bibb auto, possibly a couple more cool armor cards. Then it may end up holding it's inital price.

If it helps, I know Downey has recently signed an exclusive signing deal with an online autograph company charging $300+ a sig so I'm guessing he won't be signing anymore cards anytime soon. The Ironman cards were probably signed at the same time as the Tony Stark cards and held back by Rittenhouse for expansion set.

I too would love a Paltrow auto. Would be a tough set to pass if she signed for it, otherwise I'm happy with my Stark so I wouldn't feel the need to jump onboard.

I think the Tobey & RDJ autos will both cause the prices of the original Spiderman 3 & Ironman autographs to drop, since there will be more autos out there - regardless if it's on a different card.

For the Ed Norton though, I'm not sure what would have driven the card price down as suggested.

Any drop in price on that direct release was probably a result of the either a) dealers selling at a lower price (i.e. they didn't pay $333), or b) the sets were sold at a 'loss' to subsidize the cost of the incentive autographs (extra Norton & Ferrigno) recieved for every 3 sets purchased.

For some reason I was thinking that Topps would be going for IM2. Sad to see that RA isn't doing it.

Part of that is that with at least some of the expansion sets there have been incentives for dealers who bought a certain number of the sets. With this in mind, the dealer can sell the sets for less provided the incentive is a good seller. An example of this is the dual Lindsay Wagner & Lee Majors autograph cards given to those who purchased "X" number of the Bionic Man expansion sets. I believe the Conan expansion sets also had some sort of incentive card that allowed dealers to sell the sets off a little cheaper and make their profits with incentive card (I'm thinking it was an Arnold Schwarzenegger "cut" signature card with that release).

And as Rubadub001 mentioned above, another factor is that dealers weren't paying $333 for a set of the "Hulk Expansion", as that was retail price. Those dealers purchasing multiple sets surely got a price break in addition to the incentive item offered. I also think maybe when it was announced Norton likely would not be playing the Hulk again (due to creative differences), that might it have thrown a little cold water on his autograph cards for collectors hoping for a new franchise.

I saw the ad for the new exclusive Downey and Maguire autographed items and I found it especially notable the difference between Tobey's signature on the Rittenhouse cards versus the one seen on the new Spidey signed items. His signature on the cards didn't have a lot to them, really just two quick squiggles, but the signatures on the new memorabilia (at least the sample ones) are exquisitely detailed.

With Downey, his signature on the cards versus the new memorabilia aren't much different since he generally put down nice, legible autographs on to the cards (even dating some), but in the case of Maguire, its a different story.
I love cards, of course, but I'd rather have the signed photo than the RA card (were I inclined to purchase either) because the difference 'twixt the sigs found on the two are night and day!

Which ad are you talking about?

It's a full page color ad in the current issue of Wizard magazine. I'm pretty sure its the current issue as they gave it out at Comic Con. The ad is for the company that'll be selling the autographed photos and it shows a few signed examples. Downey's signature is awesome and clear as you would expect, but so are Tobey's, not what you might expect having seen his Spidey autograph cards. (Not knocking those cards, I'd love to have one).

The price is $199.99, limited to 250 copies. RA originally informed me it was to be an expansion set. I suppose they already had the Downey autographs and just couldn't obtain anything else. It's a good price though as the Stark version has been selling for at least $300. I'll be ordering at least 1, maybe 2.

Oh,......I think there's more coming in the near future for the expansion set for Iron man. Stay tuned. Big Grin

Now you can't leave us hanging like that! Smile Can you give a hint? Wink

I went ahead and ordered 2 of the Downey variation. Price is very reasonable. And I was informed by RA it will arrive gold sealed in the top loader just like their incentives.
