And I thought I was alone in trying to get my mom to start cranking out sketch cards!

But seriously... my mom has been a very good wood-craft painter for most of her life, so last year I asked her to do a sketch card for me. She did a pretty good Iron Man painting on the card! (I have to admit, I would have been pleased to pull it out of a pack.)

When she told me it took her 2 days to do it, all my dreams of having my own "sketch card sweatshop" crumbled to dust.

[If she still has it, I'll scan and post it.]

Not exactly the worst sketch ever, but I just received a link to an auction at the Royal Academy of Arts here in the UK and looking through the 80 lots on offer I couldn't help but think of this thread. While I know art is totally subjective and all and everything, would anyone on here seriously offer £6000 UKPounds for this:

http://www.ra-now-onlineauctio...uction/lot.php?ID=83

or £7,750 for this:

http://www.ra-now-onlineauctio...uction/lot.php?ID=62

or best of all £1,600 for this which has a buy it now of £10K Eek

Suddenly, some of Shum's work looks worth every penny Big Grin

The first 2 are interesting but no, I wouldn't pay that much for them even if I could. I'll refrain from commenting on the third one.

I know art is subjective, but I'll just say those are not my taste because there's no connection to them, it triggers no emotion for me and the visual interst is minimal.

Sketch cards should be one to a very few per case, to maintain quality and allow artists time to draw nice ones.

I remember a long time ago, an artist who drew himself (or a fellow artist) at the bottom of a well, drawing madly sketches, and a bucket coming up and down to collect them. It was funny at first, but this shouldn't happen. And showing only elaborated sketches to promote a set is not fair to customers. The samples should reflect the full production run, not the best and rare ones.

I believe that was Czop and Martineck (well). I'm sure someone still has a pic/scan of it.

It is all about expectation; Manufacturers advertise the set with the high end sketch cards - never the stick men or howling monkeys. If card sets are advertised as 1 per box and top quality sketches shown in the adverts then that is what is expected, if the advert showed the "poorer" sketches then people would be aware of what they might get. Adverts showing only the very best sketches are at the minimum misleading.
