Many people who knew Bill DeFranzo knew he collected many things. After his untimely passing in July 2016 my sisters and I realized the massive scope of what he collected after he was gone. Now comes the question...what do we do with everything? My father loved all of his collections but the promo cards were his passion. We wanted to try and find a way not to have to break up our father's efforts. So, it is with great pleasure the Bill DeFranzo Trust is happy to announce the sale of our father's entire promo card collection to a true promo card collector Promoking. Promoking was already a master-collector in the world of promo card collecting prior to this sale. My sisters and I believe our father's collection has found a good home. There's no doubt in my mind with this acquisition of our father's collection merged with his collection, Promoking is the the largest promo card collector in the industry today. At the end of the day it's nice to know our father's collection will be in good hands.

Now, as for my father's non-sport card collection... that will live on with me. Once again, thanks to this community for keeping non-sport alive and well. I look forward to being a bigger part of it in the years to come.

David I'm glad you have found a solution that is satisfactory to all involved. I'm sure your dad would be happy that you have seen to his collection. Congrats to Promoking who has a magnificent collection to sort through.

And now that you are a non sport collector, see you at the Chicago show David!

Reading this made me a little happier today. Smile

I knew Bill only slightly from a couple of correspondences, but we all felt like we knew him very well from his contributions to NSU and his posts on Card Talk. When we have to let our lifetime collections go, I think we all would like to know that whoever gets them, they will appreciate them not for their monetary value, but for the care and determination and love it took to put them together.

I think Bill would be very pleased that his treasures went to Promoking, someone who has the same passion for promo cards as he did. Well done.

Never mind Wolfie, I have noted in my will that you should receive my entire spare cards collection. There is just a small problem in that it currently runs to around 300,000 cards and you will have to pay the freight from New Zealand. Still, a mere 2 or 3 hundred bucks should cover it and there is several hundred New Kids On The Block cards to while away those freezing UK nights sifting through them.

David,
I want to thank you and your sisters for having entrusted me with your father's beloved collection. He was my mentor and the depth of his knowledge on promo cards was unparalleled. I will cherish it!
I also want to thank my fellow collectors for their well wishes.

My "good home" is currently overwhelmed with the breadth of Bill's accumulation. Not that I am complaining, of course. But it will be a monumental task to sort through everything and to painstakingly fill in the holes of my current collection.
The aim of acquiring Bill's holdings, was not only to increase my own, but also to expand my knowledge of this beloved, rather arcane sub genre in order to share what I already know and continue to learn with all non sports card collectors who have an interest.
Because there is often so little documentation concerning existence, provenance, quantity, scarcity, variety and the like in the promo world as compared to "regular" modern non sport card collecting, I want collectors to realize how much fun promo card hunting really is and also how many promo cards exist which are either undocumented or on which little information is available, pertaining to their favorite topic, comic character, TV show, movie etc...
In addition to containing a majority of the catalogued promos in PCE and most contemporary promo cards, Bill's collection also has its fair share of "previously unknown" cards. So, as I proceed to catalogue Bill DeFranzo's collection, his legacy will forever continue to permeate the collective consciousness of current and future promo card collectors the world over as his his collection is assimilated into mine and I share the knowledge gained with the non sports card family.

Promoking,

It sounds like Bill's family took some time to think about how best to manage his card collection, deciding to keep what is likely a massive sample of non-sports titles old and recent. In his columns Bill occasionally hinted at what he had beyond promo cards. He was NSU's pricing specialist for all trading cards for many years for a reason - what he learned across the time he was building that collection

Their decision to sell his promo collection to you is probably the best course of action they could have chosen. Bill lives on through his collections, and particularly this one, because it has transferred to someone who also thinks it's even more than a wealth of great cards. It was a resource he referred to often in his effort to pass along information, and while you will be learning from it directly now, you aren't interested in keeping that knowledge (and the fun) just to yourself. You've expressed your intention to share with the rest of us and I look forward to hearing about what you discover. Maybe there's a book in that.

Congratulations,

Jess
