I personally think the Rick Grimes patch card /18 is the most valuable prop or costume non sport card ever! (not including 1/1's)
Especially since the redemptions expired and only 12 were ever redeemed.

I can think of some rare, Rittenhouse, Breygent, Artbox cards but no that would command this kind of value today.

I would like to hear what other fellow collectors think. Any thoughts?

That's a good question, but I think it should be two good questions. I consider costume cards and prop cards to be two different things. The James Bond business card or the Buffy stake card is a prop card. The Grimes patch card is not a prop by my definition, its a costume variant. You can call it just a patch catagory all by itself perhaps, since its not one of those silly manufactured patches, but it still is not a prop.

I would call the Buffy stake card the most valuable prop card, just because there are so few and there still is a lot of demand.

I would rather have the Big Bang multiple costume card over the Grimes patch, just because I like that show. I'm not saying its more valuable, just that I would like it more. Smile

For Trek, RA put out a badge card for the Trek 2009 movie, limited to 40, RC3. It can command quite a price. Very coveted card still today. I was involved in the sale of one for $5000! (involved in means it wasn't mine, therefore *I* didn't see the $5000...oh I wish!)

So what's going to happen to the 6 that were never redeemed?

Will this bring down the price for WD1 boxes now that the redemptions are expired?

I wish it would drop the price on the WD 1 so I can start collecting the rest of the set.

How can it be a variant when all the patch cards feature pieces of the patch? It's not like some have other pieces of the shirt - those are on entirely different cards. A variant should be similar cards where something "varies." Now if say 2% of the Rick costume cards had pieces of patch, those should be considered variants. But because the card itself is unique, it really isn't a variant os the regular costume card.

Now the "prop" argument comes down to semantics - do you consider wardrobe to be a prop? I would say no, so I agree with you there.

Well you left out the part in my post where I said that the Grimes patch could be considered in a catagory of its own because it was cut up separately from the rest of the uniform. I don't know if I'd call it semantics or just a matter of perception, but to me a patch on a costume is still part of a costume, and should never be called a prop. I think we agree there.

Now lets take the Dexter bowling shirt costume card just as an example to illustrate what I was referring to as a costume variant. That bowling shirt had an embroidered section or patch on the back. Some of the bowling shirt costume cards had parts of that patch, most just had the solid color shirt material. Those limited number of cards with parts of the patch area became higher priced variants, but they were not called patch cards.

In the case of the Grimes, it is a patch and nothing but a patch because there is no costume card that has the shirt and a little bit of the patch. That's how CZE made the card, using 100% of the patch. So I would be fine with saying that there is no patch variant, but that still doesn't make the patch card a prop card to me. The patch would have been sewn onto the uniform. It is a different material, but so is a collar or a fur-lining or decorative additions, and they aren't props either.

Now Iron Man's Armour cards, before someone brings that up Big Grin, they are prop cards because its not costume material and because RA calls them Armour Props. Wink

For prop cards, didn't some of the early Harry Potter prop cards go for crazy money? I'm not a Potter collector but I seem to recall the Pear Tree Leaves /30 selling huge at release, althose were incentives and not found in packs.

I forgot about that card. Yes that is probably more valuable. I like walking dead more then Trek so I was partial to my thoughts but would agree on this. They probably wouldn't go for $5 to 6K anymroe but still very valuable.

Chuck, good point but think TWD patch /18 would command $1200 at the very absolute low end right now. I think it is closer to a 2K+ card.

I thought you were just talking about the material used and not the overall card, since you mentioned it not being a manufactured patch.

Your Dexter example is right on the money at what I was getting at. Smile

I would say the 2009 Star Trek Movie badge card is the most valuable -- each worth even more money if you break it down to the 4 variations of the 40 cards made (Medical 15; Command 10: Science 10; and Engineering 5). I'd be curious to see if they both came up for auction right now with 99 cent starting bids which would go higher -- the Walking Dead Rick patch card or the Star Trek badge card. Personally though I've also wanted the Artbox Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Golden Ticket prop card (#/18).

Maybe off the subject but I sold a LOTR auto of Dominic Monaghan for $1,300. When the value hit that high I cound't justify holding onto it.
