I've been a collector of things for decades including non-sports cards, statues, busts and comics. My garage is begining to show signs of overflowing. I've decided to limit future collections to just cards and sell off the bulky stuff.

I have begun wondering what do card collectors collect within the hobby and what other collections do you have? I'm seeing new inovations I like, 'Z' cards and 3D cards to name a few. I am curouis what other things are in the relm of this hobby? Dog tags which are taking on the look of cards is one example.

My wife and I have tried to collect for just one "thing", like a show or movie, at a time, but we always find ourselves interested in something new / different before we finish. Then, a card set, limited edition print, mini-figures, maquettes, etc. comes out for that...

SO, we are trying something new that has been a little better. We take turns picking which stuff we will get and buy only that.

It's only a stop-gap, but it has slowed things down dramatically.

We have discussed giving extras to a local dealer we have a good relationship with to give to kids who come in with their parents as a bonus deal. Our only profit is that their might be another generation of collectors, which makes us smile.

Good luck...

I pretty much do master sets, but I do have a auto collection of actors/actresses from "Chuck" as well as a small miscellaneous auto collection.

I also collect PSCs by Andy Fry and David Desbois, and PSCs of Bayonetta and Soul Calibur 4 characters.

I've also started a collection of Binaltech and Masterpiece Transformers. I have 4 of the Binaltech ones (Optimus, Jazz, Wheeljack, and Deadend) and 2 Masterpiece ones (MP-4 Optimus w/ trailer, and MP-3 Starscream).

My other main collection was Casino chips. Concentrated on Vegas $1 chips, and any Australian chip.

Without getting too deep, I really do believe some people have a "collector's mentality" and they always have to be collecting something. I know I have it, because all my life I've run in cycles, giving up buying one thing only after I managed to replace it with another.

Good thing I'm only talking about comics, models, VHS tapes, Fenton glass, sportscards, autographs, DVDs, autograph cards, and a bunch of odd stuff in boxes that never amounted to much. There is a lot of overlapping in collectibles and its easy to jump around, but its hard to afford more than one passion at a time.

Its all good, just so long as no one sends your name to Hoarders. Big Grin

One of my earliest memories is looking through boxes of old photographs that were all neatly separated and in their own envelopes (from Photomat and places like that). It was a world of wonder and I liked how each envelope held a complete little story of some adventure my young mind could hardly grasp.

Shortly after, I discovered there were pictures of the Bionic Man TV show, Happy Days, Welcome Back Kotter, and the 1976 King Kong movie in similar tidy little packages that could be had, and some of them even came with bubble gum!

By the time Star Wars cards came out in 1977, I knew exactly what those little numbers on each card meant and I loved sorting them out and looking for the ones I still needed. When I finished that original blue set, I thought I'd accomplished all I'd ever need to at the ripe old age of 6....and then, from out of his pocket, some kid pulled out a RED Star Wars card with a number higher than 66 and I knew then that there was still work to be done, and I set out to do it and have never really stopped. 35 years later, there's still work to do. I can't imagine not collecting cards.

Cards obviously. My entry into cards was actually my broader DC collection (>9,000 comics, cabinet of statues/busts, phone cards, pogs,...).

Still hobby, but less obviously a 'collection' as I collect to use instead of to have, I also have hundreds of books and CDs and something like 10 different musical instruments.

Hoarders wouldn't be interested though. Everything is organised and shelved and I do occasionally cull (I got rid of a large proportion of my fiction books when I bought a Kindle). However, many years ago, the books were one factor in me moving house - I ran out of wall space for bookcases.

Yes, well, My name is Sean and I am a collector.
No wait....make that a total obsessive/compulsive/passionate completist. I have always collected and in my time have been obsessed with 45rpm records (sold eventually when I couldn't find any more at 33,800) an almost complete Playboy magazine collection which I sold so I could travel, books by selected authors (dozens of them) hooks on or by the Beatles (I currently have 420) and in my youth before it was environmentally disastrous to do so, I collected moths, butterflies and bird's eggs.
Along the way I have dabbled in coins, empty cigarette packages (don't ask) and cigar bands, war medals, plastic figurines, keys (currently have a 1,000 or more)and, and, and..... no wait...now I'm getting depressed.
Oh did I mention trading cards? I have a target to complete all sets from 1985 to 2000. To date I have finished 884 sets of 1124.

About the only thing I don't collect in fact is modern currency!

You don't collect currency because you spend it all on your collections!

I have no idea who the richest person in NZ is, but I'm thinking it must be you LOL

Do you collect sport cards as well or just stick with non-sport?

I collect Coins, Banknote, Promo Cards, National Geographic, Harmony Kingdom, Stamps, Comics, Posters, Buttons, Action Figures, Bottles, Carnival Glass, Arrowheads, Sharks Teeth, and Rocks, I'm sure I'm missing a accumulation somewhere. I only keep up with the first five on the list anymore, the other accumulations are stored and not added to regularly. I do have a problem with collecting to the point where I should be on medication.

Yes, I must admit that it looks like I have spent a fortune on collecting and spread over about 30 years I probably have but I have always found a way of doing things on the cheap. My record collection for instant came about when NZ Radio stations were just switching to CD's and 45rps were no longer played. I toured the whole country's radio stations picking up literally 1000's of records for free!! I ended up selling the collection for about $50,000 and spent most of it on books. I still spend a great deal of time mooching around second hand book shops, fairs and bargain bin stores buying about one or two books a week.

As for trading cards because I only collect pre 2000 I'm not saddled with "having to have" piece works, film cells, autos, sketches or any other of these expensive cards. My last trades with members of this forum resulted in an exchange of several hundred cards at no cost to either party. In fact the most I have ever spent on a single card is $8 - $10. Recently, I came into a small inheritance and spent about $1200 of it on cards. From a good online dealer I was able to buy around 40 boxes for that!!

However, when I do become the richest person in NZ (which is the game plan) I will start buying up sets from pre-1980. A&BC Beatles here I come!!

I used to have a Carnival Glass collection, the ex ended up with it. Now I just collect comics and trading cards which my husband thinks is way too much stuff.

Over the years, many things:

-movie posters
-hockey cards
-glass insulators
-non-sport cards
-sketchcards (yes, a subset of non-sport, but concentrated)
-Star Wars figures
-Star Wars "stuff" (magazines, newspaper clippings, book store displays, etc.)
-shark teeth
-books
-mini busts (mainly Bowen)
-comics
-LEGOs
-a small foray into daguerrotypes

I'm sure more will come to me.

I would say I have always collected something, books would be my longest running, ever since I was 9 years old when I read Lord of the Rings I was hooked.. I have always bought books and always will, I do always read the books I buy and tend to focus every now and then on a particular author or set.. one of my longest running sets which I am still slowly working on is the forgotten realms books, there are over 200 hundred of these so every now and then I purchase a few more.. will be a shame when I get them all..

Other things over the years, trading cards obviously, pretty much whatever set takes my fancy, more so in the past few years than before, smurfs, knives, PC games, 1/18th die cast model cars, mostly from movies or TV, my Mad Max Interceptor being my favourite of all time.. TV shows, Movies, Music, comics..

I think that is about it.. I had to move house recently as I had filled the old one to capacity.. think I am going to need to move again soon...
