Playing Card Decks
I recently came across an item I don't even remember buying, a playing card deck of 007 Casino Royale. It says its from cartamundiusa, licensed by EON and dated 2006. These aren't another CGG, just a regular 52 card playing deck with 3 Jokers. Each card has a different picture from Casino Royale and the Bond design and logo is the same on all backs. Although you see single celebrity playing cards offered on eBay at times, most of those seem handmade and unlicensed.

So I'm wondering if collectible licensed playing cards are a thing and if anyone here pursues such decks? If so, are there many that are officially licensed to entertainment titles? Or is it that, like matchboxes and beer bottles, you just look for as many different deck designs as you can find?

Cartamundi have done loads of these playing card sets especially here in Europe. I always thought they were a French company or Belgium. They actually took a stand at one of the UK shows years ago and gave out promos for the Dr Who decks.

Beware that there are often two versions, the one has a picture on every card but the other only has a picture on the Jack, Queen, King cards.

Thanks, now it makes sense. I probably picked that deck up at a retail store on a whim. Didn't know there were more Bond decks or Dr. Who for that matter.

I wouldn't mind if card makers took that playing card idea for a base or chase set. They are making small sets anyway and have exhausted designs for some of the franchise titles like GoT, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Why not make base cards you could use for something?

Penny Dreadful did have a nice looking chase set of Tarot cards that I completed, but it was only around 20 cards. It didn't make a full Tarot deck.

I carry an extensive line of LICENSED playing card decks.

Marvel Comics and Movies
DC Comics and Movies
Star Wars
Harry Potter
And lots more...

I actually will sell more $ wise at a comic-con (remember those?) in playing cards than I usually do in boxes of trading cards.

Some people collect decks, others just like a collectible of a favorite character or show for not a lot of money. Most decks run $8-$15, so the buy in is much less than a box of cards, and you get the complete set. Much more friendly to the casual collector.

So yes, it's a thing.

Yep, I sold a LOT of those at release. Still have them in stock for shows.

Just got some absolutely beautiful Marvel Avengers decks in. And the same company made a great Mandalorian set.

If they have the company name on the box like Carta Mundi or Cryptozoic then yes. If they are just some playing cards then probably not.

Here's a 3-card promo pack for Cartamundi's Star Wars-themed deck from 2007. It was given out at the San Diego Comic Con of that year. You can see there's an Obi-Wan Kenobi card in it and there's a Darth Vader card. You can see the back of a checklist card of products showing SDCC logos. The Kenobi and Vader cards may be samples from the regular deck.
