Hi all, I was thinking today that some of my autograph cards are purchased not because I liked the character depicted on the card, but because I liked them in other things.

For example, today in the mail I received a Mark Moses autograph card which pictures him in the Broken Bow episode of Star Trek Enterprise. While I like most of the Star Trek shows, never was a real fan of Enterprise. I bought the card because I am a fan of his work in the movie Platoon.

Another example is my Ian Holm autograph from LOTR Chrome Trilogy. The LOTR movies were okay, but I really loved his work in the underappreciated movie, The Sweet Hereafter.

Anyone else do this? Do you buy autos because you liked other performances by the actor, sometimes more than the one depicted on the card? Just curious. If this has already been hashed out, disregard this post. Red Face

Definitely. Actually a lot of my "actor" keepers aren't often because of what I like them in. I'm just as happy snagging something from a cheaper set as I'm looking for the autograph, not the character.

It's funny you should mention Ian Holm as The Sweet Hereafter was exactly the same one I have in my collection. His Trilogy Chrome autograph was very reasonable and I grabbed one a while back. Kirsten Dunst in Small Soldiers? No thanks, but I'm not getting rid of that card.

absolutely have done that.....

Case in point: Heather Locklear- Loved to hate her on Melrose Place, which I watched every season of, so once I knew she signed that Looney Tunes card, I had to have one.

Anthony Stewart Head's Highlander card is also a cheaper alternative to an actual Giles card.

I have been tempted to get Kristen Dunst, Alex Borstein(Catwoman auto), Alicia Silverstone, Shannen Doherty and Yvonne Craig auto cards as well(and I've actually gotten Yvonne's auto in person)

My pulling Alyssa Milano was a fluke, but I would have eventually tried to chase down one of her autos to supplement a "Melrose Place" auto collection.

That was my thinking to... actually there were several cards in that set that were awesome for that reason. Even if I hadn't been a Highlander fan too! Thumb Up

I have a number of autos that I got because I like the actor rather than the show/movie the card is from. Kirsten Dunst Small Soldiers auto is probably the best example since I've never actually seen that movie. Razz

I most definitely buy autos for the actor's signature, not for the role portrayed on the card.

I've recently become a big fan of the TV show "Monk" and have acquired Tony Shalhoub's auto from Men in Black II and Ted Levine's auto from the Wild Wild West movie set.

Also, I am going after my "Lost" master set. In addition to the autos in that set, I already had Dominic M's Two Towers auto, I have the Mummy Returns Mr. Eko auto, and I have Daniel Dae Kim's Enterprise auto on the way! Now I just need that Alias auto of Terry O'Quinn...

Arte Johnson/Lost In Space for Laugh-In
Daniel J. Travanti/Lost In Space for Hill Street Blues
(Never watched any LIS)

Don Rickles/Wild Wild West just because

I've done this too!

Peter Wingfield from the Catwoman set since he never signed for Highlander

Robert Englund from Charmed PO3 (Freddy!)

Michael Madsen from JB Die Another Day (Reservoir Dogs)

Frank Gorshin from ST TOS since I know there will never be an old Batman set (The Riddler!)

Yeah, definitely thought about this way too much! Big Grin

Some of the Doctor Who autograph cards I have in my collection I bought because the actors were better known for appearences in other shows/movies (and in one case because the actress had participated in a Theatrical 'read through' I attended for a musical based on a book by my favourite author - obscure I know, but it was the main reason I got that card!)
It has to be said, if I pull a card of one of the 'supporting cast' (aka, perhaps rather insultingly, "Low End autograph") I'm more likely to keep it if I'm familiar with them from another show that I also like!

and thanks for that I will look out for that one ... yes the Tony Shalhoub auto was the only one I kept from MIIB and the other main ones I've done this with were Joel Grey ( Cabaret ) with the Buffy Season 5 A28 Doc and of course Burt Reynolds from X-Files Season 9 and the late great Ronnie Barker from The Avengers Series 2

Of course, what I should have mentioned (and didn't!) was the Martin Sheen (The West Wing) autograph in B5 Profiles. I'm not aware of anyo fhte other main cast signing for other card sets (though if anyone wants to tell me about something... Big Grin)

At least 75% of my autos are because of the actor, not neccesarily the show they signed for.

At one time I was putting together autos from people who had appeared in Smallville, i.e. Michael Mckeon Trek, Felicia Bell Schafer DS9, George Murdock B.Galactica original/Twilight zone, William B. Davis Outer Limits SS&S/X-Files, Rob Labelle First Wave, Emmanuelle Vaugier Charmed and a couple others. It was fun after having Masters of everything Smallville to branch out and do a side collection.

The only way I've gotten Val Kilmer was from the Fans of the Game set. Still need to pick up a Kyle Chandler from King Kong for Early Edition Wink

I've got Dean Stockwell from the Twilight Zone. He's been in Quantum Leap and Stargate.

Sir Ben Kingsley I pulled from the Thunderbirds set, Ghandi and a ton of films. His auto is ery cheap despite the fact he's an Oscar winner.

This is the only reason I collect auto cards.
I have the Xena Bruce Campbell because I like him in Evil Dead.
I have the Star Trek Enterprise Jeffrey Combs because of Re-Animator and the Frighteners.
I will soon have the Alias Season 4 Angus Scrimm because of his role in Phantasm.
Those are pretty much the only autograph cards I have. I mainly get them because of horror stars.
I have been fortunate to get in person autographs of Linda (Exorcist) Blair and Doug (Pinhead) Bradley at the Fx show in Orlando.
This year Robert Englund and George Romero will be there Drool

I don't actually have any auto cards from sets that I don't collect but if there was an autograph I REALLY wanted that was available on a trading card but it wasn't possible to get that persons autograph in person or through fan mail then yeah, I'd buy their autocard... if I could afford it

Besides collecting trading cards I also collect autographs. Personally I would never buy an autograph (eg. signed photo) from eBay or a dealer. The only form of autograph I would buy are official autographed trading cards
