I m n world of my own,why are these unsavory images allowed on trading cards ? I'm looking at something different to everyone else ?
some of these photos are way beyond the pale
I find them very offencive and are about to bin them,it's a disgrace men appear like this but all the fuss is about the female beach volleyball outfit, speaking of which, how come the 2 male beach volleyball players are also shirtless ? i ve watched a lot of male beach volleyball and never seen players shirtless, there are 14 (at least) undressed men in this set,it spoilt the enjoyment of the cards, there shouldn t have been so many naked male images or is it a deliberate ploy by topps ?

Cheif, I think you are really overreacting to this. I've got the set, and gone back and looked at them - there is nothing offensive on any of these cards. These athletes often wear skimpy outfits while performing. It could be worse - the first olympics were men only and they wrestled in the nude...thank the gods trading cards hadn't been invented.

i still find them disgusting,i knew there would be no one who would agree, male nudity is matter of fact in this conventional world, only women have the right to complain of same sex nudity, and get all men to agree, there didn t have to be so many of them and there are a couple of them that are way beyond the point.
i know i will lose, because i m not allowed to have a voice on the subject,so i will play light, and heres my tribute to all the hypocrites who blanked their bettie page cards

Have you seen Vampirella, Bettie Page, Bench Warmers, Dungeon Dolls and about a dozen others of somewhat questionable content? Why not a little beefcake to even it out? Big Grin

I'm kidding, not about the questionable content part, but I actually haven't seen any of the new Olympic cards. I have seen prior sets of course and there was nothing that interesting about them. Since its the Summer Games all the athletes are wearing track shorts, speedos, etc. This set had to be licensed and approved by the USA Olympic Committee, so I don't think it can be any more offensive than trying to watch some of those made up "sports". Wink

Quick addition: You beat me to it with pictures. I really don't like the way those cards look. Not that the bare chests are the problem, just that I would rather see a regular photo than a stylized rendition.

Wouldn't disagree with you there. I'm sure the Olympic Committee would be much more sensitive to complaints about underdressed females than males. Such is the double standard after all, I don't say its right. Roll Eyes

Well, if they ever do make a set for naked Wrestling from the first Olympics, hopefully there won't be any insert cards. Razz

This has got me remembering fondly years ago when the Olympics was a one big wet T-shirt contest. A lot of the women's suits (there were orange suits thet were the worst -or best depending on your point of view) became fairly transparent when wet. There is a photo of Melissa Gilbert (Little House on the Prairie) on the Battle of the Network Stars looking down to discover that there were no secrets between her and America.

Wow, trading cards that acurately depict the athletes' appearance while they are participating IN THEIR SPORT are "obscene"? That is pretty borderline homophobic, don't you think?

Saying that there is something "erotic" in these poses is just simply off base. When you go the the beach or pool (assuming that you do), are you offended by the shirtless men there as well?

I'm with you, Igman, and was a little taken aback at the use of the term "erotic naked men" to describe these cards.

I'm not a fan of modern pro wrestling, but I enjoyed the Topps Heritage WWE Wrestling sets as they used some designs from classic Topps baseball cards (which I've always loved), so I collected all 3 series. While pretty much every male wrestler in the set is shirtless, surely those cards can't be considered erotic as the wrestlers are simply depicted wearing the same clothes they wrestle in at all ages events.

If cards such as these Olympic ones that are clearly not sexual in nature but feature shirtless men, are considered erotic, I think it says a lot more about anyone who would label them thusly than the cards themselves.

This is really opening my eyes, as I've never heard anyone complain about male shirtless Olympians before, I'm truly gobsmacked Eek

Swimming is such a huge part of Australian life especially if you live on the Queensland coast like I did growing up. It was more than usual to see during summer guys walking around shirtless along the beach and even going to the shopping centers shirtless, mind you these guys are late teens to early adults, so I think it was more of a showing off sort of thing, but no one ever took offense to it.

Those sort pictures that you have scanned are the sort of photos that are regularly printed on the front pages of our newspapers showing our swimmers and their latest achievements. I never realised that showing men's pecks was obscene Smile

But I have to thank you for your opinion, because I had never thought that way before, and seeing the world through someone else's eyes is always a good thing. Thumb Up

everyone has the right to their opinion
but saying that male nipples are disgusting
and that these cards should be censored is a bit over the top

erotic male nudes was just an example term i used to indicate i would not buy such a product if it was released, and yes i m offended by naked males where females are not allowed,if mens nipples were as deemed to be as offencive as female nipples the world would be a better place, men being allowed to strip off when it gets hot and not showing solidarity while females have to suffer the heatis another story,i find these naked male cards very unsavory and would not have bought them if i knew there were going to be so many (although the box cover was an indication of it)

This is a very amusing topic. Ridiculous, but amusing.

It's kinda like saying that James Bond with a gun is offensive if one was opposed to violence or weapons. Gasp!!

You do realise that these cards don't show anyone "nude"? A topless male does not constitute an offensive form of nudity, bottomless yes of course.

Its pretty dam hot in the UK right now and I work in retail and loads of men are just walking around now in their shorts with no tops on.

Think of what the body part is associated with in females and then males? That is why female top half nudity has some kind of censorship.

Also, what about the other sets that show a topless man: James Bond im sure has been shirtless on a few cards? Twilight with all the guys getting their tops off, x men, buffy, angel, LOST, probably a few in Star Trek sets and of course WWE.

Pictures of men participating in their sport are not erotic or pornographic!

Certain views and opinions should just be kept to yourself if they are going to cause things like this to happen, its like people voicing heavy religious views in a topic - not everyone will be as religious as you are (an example).

I'll say this as gently as possible, cause in the privacy of your own home you are welcome to feel whatever and however you wish. including not wanting to see clearly not nude, but shirtless men and their nipples Wink
And I'm not sure a discussion on what *goes too far* on a card is in of itslef a bad thing. We've had them for some female sets that were a bit....cheesecakey Wink
But, this is a card forum...discussions of moral right and wrong, sooial standards, gender and racial equality and other button pushing issues are not in line with the site's goals or purposes and usually end up going negative. It's a fine line being asked to walk, I know. But, let's keep it friendly and conversational.

If thine cards offend thee pluck them out.

There is nothing right or wrong about any trading card or what is depicted on it. Likewise there is nothing right or wrong with what anyone thinks about the images depicted on the cards.

If you like them enjoy them.

If you don't like them post them to me, please do not throw them away.

nah i ve just sliced them ALL WITH A KNIFE,INCLUDING THE COMMEMERATIVE MEDAL CARD (WHICH WAS FUN TO BE HONEST) AND WILL POST THEM BACK TO TOPPS,BECAUSE I FIND THEM UNSAVORY AND WANTED TO AIR MY VOICE,I DO ALSO FIND IT HILARIOUS THE WAY I WAS ATTACKED,(LIKE I WAS SUPPORTING A RELIGIOUS MINORITY) ESPECIALLY LIKE THE FEMALE COMMENTS,WHO,IF THE BAN WAS LIFTED TOMORROW AND FEMALES WERE WALKING AROUND SHIRTLESS (TO WHICH I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH ANYWAY) WOULD BE SPITTING VENOM,THERE ARE TOO MANY NAKED MEN IN THIS SET,A COUPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCEPTABLE (NOT REALLY) BUT A WHOLE PART OF THE SET HAS THEM,ITS A WE CAN DO IT,YOU CAN'T STATEMENT.
