OK, here's another interesting topic- it goes as far as your imagination.

Today, we have many types of cards which have expanded the kinds of cards we collect- autographs, cut autos, costume cards, sketch cards, art cards, even hair cards.

The question:

Can you come up with a type of card that hasn't been done yet, or rarely done? An actual, hold in your hand type, that is Wink

My imagination doesn't seem to stretch that far, but I'm sure that among us, there must be some who think outside the box, as it were.

One that does come to mind are those holodeck cards from Star Trek Voyager Season 2 from Fleer/Skybox, which were kinda neat. Mind you, they seemed rather lacking in their original form, but looked like they had potential. I haven't seen anything like them since...

Well I had an idea for a costume card with a huge swatch that would actually be 2 cards in 1. The swatch would fill the entire surface of the card except for a 1/4 inch border all around and the back of the card would have the card number, that would be just 1/2 of the card though. The other half would actually be a sheath that the other card would slide into. The card would have a picture of the actor/actress wearing the costume and would have a clear window so you could see part of the jumbo swatch and the back would have a matching number to the other half. The first card would slide into a slot in the top of the second card making 1 card when put together but if you wanted to see the whole jumbo swatch you could just slide it out again. The card(s) could either be inserted in the pack together or each be a random chase card where you would have to find both halves to put together. If you wanted a real challenge then you could have each half serial numbered, any 2 halves would be considered the whole card but true die hard chasers could look to find the halves with matching serial numbers. Big Grin

Have Pop-Up cards been done?

You could have a chase set of cards that unfold and pop-up to make some kind of diorama.

This could be applied to any show, for example a Stargate set with a pop-up Stargate and characters that you could make your own scenes or a Buffy graveyard pop-up chase set. These could be expanded on with future releases to include other characters, villains or sets.

To expand this theme, a pop-up sketch card would not be impossible, or even scenes or characters sketched/drawn by different artists.

I'm not one for this kind of display (space being at a premium), but I know I'd collect them.

An interactive insert, A CD rom card that either

Give you backstory on the characters(would be great for heroes)

Or a hidden episode with like 20 CDs you have to collect and when played in order it is a special episode not shown on tv..

Although probably cost prohibitive, a digital card with an actual moving image, similar to a flat screen TV. Another interesting item might be a redemption card that would entitle you to select any one card from that set, including case loaders or incentives.

Autographed Film Cell Cards?

Maybe some insert set that has 'behind the scenes' commentary written by the actor/director instead of a CardCo person?

Videoclip cards - if it's too hard to secure the rights for certain tv/movie properties, maybe some pictures/videos of the celebrities signing the autograph cards or behind the scenes manufacturing process (cutting up prop cards, etc), might be kinda fun.

Music cards, like the Hallmark greeting cards.

Press a little square and it plays a few bars from the show/movie theme song. Metal

1. random redemptions to see the set of a show , hangout with the actors (1:entire run)
2. you have a verions that has an extra 50 base cards, thats only available sans inserts/parallels. make it cost 20 dollars or less for the box. and have the boxes packs be actual wax packs, with old school topps style box design and folding.
3. Id like to see cards made of natural material, maybe a copper card with image printed on it like a printing plate, or a stone card or wood. Or a card printed on a quartz 1/8th inch sheet.
4. Actually original negative photo cards, with the actual negative film shot by the camera inserted into the pack.
5. Signed photos as case toppers.
6. remeption to send in one personal item to have signed by a cast memember at their card signing when they get the product signed (make them super rare)
7. Product with say 200 base cards, no inserts, and each card is numbered out of 5000, serial numbered or printed "1 of 5000" , 3 cards per pack.
8. Box incentives like a small sculpture , maybe 3x2 inches, of a characters head or bust up. 1 up the sketch incentive, give some sculpters a chance.
9. 40 dollars jam boxes from a manufacturer, where they put in 4 packs from 10 products that year , random insertion of goods.
10. Original photos on the front of some of the cards, maybe behind the scenes cards, at premiers, etc. maybe a consistent 9 card subset at the end of everyproduct a company makes "who, what , when , how"
11. Interview main cast memembers to get quotes for the back of the cards on the scene/character represented.
12. Factory sealed base sets, printed on a cheaper but still quality base stock, like the indiana jones heritage set. It would be like throwback topps boxes.
13. 9 card autograph sets, that can be put together to form a larger cast photo, would have to use specific types of photos to accomplish that.
14. Commision original portrait cards for the shows main stars, or whatever that set is focusing on.
15. Non traditional brands should be explored. Deadliest catch, Discovery reality collective set, etc. something other then scifi and animated.

If I remember correctly, the RA Star Trek Animated set had mini CD ROMS featuring an interview with DC Fontana - these were 'die cut' and each had a different character printed on the label. (Cue Startrekgeek!)

And I think there were pop-up cards for one of the Skybox Voyager sets!

I have often thought that a gatefold card containing all the main cast autographs would work - the gatefold format would allow some images to be included (thus avoiding the somewhat boring blank card look). I think I posted this here some years ago, with the thought that all the Star Trek Captains could sign the same card...

Nothing much has been done with sound cards - RA had a go with some of their Trek sets, but that was some time ago and the technology has made huge leaps since then. I've seen credit card sized USB memory 'sticks', so in theory, a trading card 'stick' could be pack inserted containing, perhaps, clips from the card set subject, perhaps an interactive set checklist, weblinks, that sort of thing.
Au Res.,

Although I have seen pop-up cards done before, they've all been very simple; I would love to see what someone like Robert Sabuda could do with a fold-out pop-up card (check out his books if you've never heard of him, they're incredible pieces of art).

Some cool ideas. Smile That's quite the list zhamlau!

I particularly like the idea of a basic version of sets available- it would be the perfect choice for a mass production release, with hobby versions available for the more 'intense' collector, so to speak. A larger number of base cards per set sounds great, but imo, it would have to be either a hardcore action movie with lots of action, or something covering an expansive topic. Which brings up another suggestion- something other than movies or TV shows- there have been very few of those in a long long time, such as American Presidents, or even something as simple as dogs & cats.

I've always wondered if technology can produce something card sized that is capable of some of the things we'd like to see, like sound or video bites. I think so- I know all it would take is a USB style link & the sky's the limit these days. Rather cost prohibitive, though...

Great ideas- keep 'em coming! We know the producers keep a pulse here Wink

15. Box or case incentives like a nice teeshirt from the show, or hat. something to promote the brand, could be a box/case exclusive (case probably the fans would like.

16. Candy Card....make random cards be made of peppermint for a set like willy wonka. The entire pack is a thin sheet of peppermint with a printed wonka image. And best of all, the card would always stay mint..../sigh

17. layered 3d pull out cards like popup books like mentioned before, but have them fold out into scenes from the movie/show/whatever.

18. dial cards, you can dial up a certain character , and in the appropriate slots, certain facts appear, quotes, enemies, friends etc. little wheel inside the card you rotate and line up with the diecut holes in the card front to reveal the facts.

19. Cards that lock together like legos almost, or atleast fit together to make things like certain ships from scifi shows, or buildings, or people even, where the printed image on the cards makes something neat you would recognize from the show.

20. Hand written note card from a cast member. instead of just an autograph, have there be rare versions with a smaller image of the character, they use a thin pen, and the star writes you "thanks for supporting the show, your friend, aaron douglas AKA Tyrol AKA cylon , something like that.

21. Redemption for design your own card. high end with memoribilia, low end, you just get a list of preselected images (say 200) and themes, and you can build a true 1/1 card for you.

22. layered cards. That is, a card with a few layers of clear acetate, that shows the break down of certain ships, or even characters. You have say 4 layers of acetate that stack on each other, each one building onto the other to form the image. Stay with battlestar galactica.
a. Top layer, outer metal skin of the ship, some facts on that.
b. Next layer below, Electronics /weapons of the ship
c. Next layer, how people live on the ship, habitat areas
d. final layer, location of key rooms, highlighter in color.
Or in a cylon, you could do the same, with skin, underlayers, and what makes them tick. OR you could do one about the psyche of a character. a. their name/facts b. there missions
c. their belifes on things/world around them
d. their fears

23. Parchment parallel. tuffest to keep mint parallel in the world. printed on black and white only. number em low. high end collector, can make the ultimate (each out of 100) set of the cards, that look just awesome in that high contrast black and white.

24. completely card sized film cards, with just a little frame around them, each being either a full body shot, or cast shot. make em rare and numbered maybe.

25. Celebrity sketch cards. Done by the cast memebers of the show.

26. fully 3d cards. like say a sculpted face, have it have a frame around it though so it would be protected, could fit in a thick toploader easily without touching the card.

27. inflateable card, using the same outer pack filling frame as the 3d card, but have it be fild with like colored sand or something neat. like its a thick ballon filled with a colored sand giving an almost true sculpture like impression of the card, or have them made from wood. only the thickness of a pack.

28. ID cards, that they would have on the show. inserted into packs, like modern Drivers licenses, for each character. have a little clip mark at top, so you could wear it if you wanted to.

29. celebrity designed card of the character they play. whole 9 yards, look, feel, colors, art or photo. make them insert or subset.

Zhamlau - I don't think you have really thought about this topic! Big Grin

My favorite cards of all time are the 6 star wars cards issued by Interlace of 24 shots of the movie cards - absolutely superb - would love to see more of these.

CD interactive Cardz... with a z... have been around for a while. I've seen them for LOTR's, Planet of the Apes, Jurrasic Park III and others.

I remember one of the Batman animated sets had pop-ups as well.
