I think there is a mistake on the article on pg 7 of the latest NSU. First column, last paragraph it states: "How about if you're a trekker?" What's a trekker? For 40 years as far as I know a Star Trek fan of any kind is a "trekkie." I know that some dictionaries give both descriptions for a Star Trek fan, but I seem to remember a movie called Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) with Molly Ringwald and Peter Strauss. Molly was a guide on the planet or otherwise known as a trekker. Personally, I feel the word "trekkie" is the only correct description that should ever be used to describe a Star Trek fan. Anything else is just an insult to the greatest sci-fi TV series ever created.

Our local Star Trek group have a simple test : anyone serious about S.T. is a Trekker. Anyone who is a fair weather fan or bad mouths the Trekkers is a Trekkie.

One of the greatest. Outer Limits, Twilight Zone and Lost in Space all predated the original series of Star Trek as did Doctor Who

I have been a fan of Star Trek since the BBC 1st ran it, watched it every week with my father.
I am comfortable with either lable, trekkie or Trekker.
I have Star Trek plates and autographe photos all around our living room wall. All 1st time guests say "who's the Trekkie in the family"
So I think Trekkie is the more used term, but I would never get upset over it's use or any derivation.
I'm just glad that Trek still gets mentioned.

" Trek-ka " is the term used by the ooh boo boo tribe in the Patagonian rainforests when refering to all fans of Star Trek which they listen too every week on the Jungle Drum Network. Big Grin

I feel a Trekker is the kind of person who does,
where a Trekkie sits back and watches.

I'm a Trekker!

The first known use of either term in a Star Trek context is from a May 1970 fanzine called "Deck 6". The quote:
quote:
...when I started acting like a bubble-headed trekkie (rather than a sober, dignified -- albeit enthusiastic -- trekker).

That’s right, Bill. In writing this issue’s Editorial I purposely used the word Trekker. A lot of old time fans see Trekkee as having fan boy connotations, in a “get a life/ Spock-ear-wearing” kind of way. Trekker has traditionally (at least in my book) always been used to identify a serious Star Trek fan.

Alan,
I am glad you wrote. I think you are a great writer, but I am sticking to my guns. The correct and only term to describe a real, true Star trek fan is a "Trekkie"
See you at the show!!

Well, at least we've established it wasn't a typo.
